Being a Range Bully?

Shooting #5 instead of #7.5 is unsafe?

Having more than one round in a gun at a time is unsafe?

What universe do you live in? Stupid rules like that do nothing to make shooting safer and only serve to make shooters discount REAL safety rules.

I wouldn't belong to a range with such ignorant rules in the first place.

And with an attitude like that you would not be welcome, nor would you be allowed to stay once there and acting that way

7.5 shot will fall to the ground within 300 yards regardless of launch angle.

Just past the shot fall zone around my home range lies a residential area, a preschool, some schools and Goddard Space Center.

Having say, 4 buck sprinkle any of these would have a detrimental effect that might close down one fine range.

This range Trap, skeet, 5 stand, sporting clays and Olympic Trap) lies close to some nasty urban areas, and periodically folks show up with long magazine/short barreled shotguns and stuff like waist belts full of 00.

Mostly, they get the loan of equipment that doesn't violate the barrel length rule (23" or longer) and some coaching. Almost universally, they appreciate the safety issues better after. And almost universally, it's the old heads that do this rather than the overworked and busy trappers.

The rules work. In over 40 years of operation, the only serious injury was when someone's Krieghoff blew up.

Millions of shots have been taken here. One accident.

Most ranges still open have similar records and similar rules. The ones that didn't have been closed by legislation or litigation.

Finally, terms like "Nancy Boy" and "Fudd" have no place here. If you're looking for a fight, go hang out over on the Brady Campaign's website......

You seem to be confusing zombie-warrior fantasy game ranges with clubs where the object is to shoot clay targets.
Well I did take the daughter out to slaughter an old pumpkin from Halloween and a bunch of water jugs the other day. :D

There are not typically any RO's working every field, merely someone pulling and keeping score - that person may act and have the power of an RO when warranted, but most are young kids trying to make a buck - hence the RULES that slob shooters seem to think do not apply to them.
That helps. I am not used to ranges where there aren't RO's about, yet have a formal setting.

zincwarrior, I've shotgunned from SoCal to Maine and Florida to Washington and the operations are as 1-oz described: The rangemaster in his office and the pullers on the fields. When you arrive at the range, their rules are clearly posted, if you don't like them, then you're free to leave.

I wouldn't belong to a range with such ignorant rules in the first place. I imagine that if some stranger complained about such piddly violations to me I'd tell him to get screwed and mind his own business.

Nancy boy Fudd rules and busy bodies take ALOT of the enjoyment out of shooting and remove much of the value of range sessions for those of us who train to do more than punch holes in paper.

Fudd? Busybodies? Nancy boy? The first time you acted up I can gurantee you that you would be banned from that range. You wouild likely soon find youself unwelcome at clubs anywhere in the region.

Agreed. I don't see why either are an issue as thats the rules. If the rules say all shooters must wear fuzzy chicken hats well you best get you an approved fuzzy chicken hat because thats what you signed up for.
Fudd? Busybodies? Nancy boy?
Thanks, now I have the image of a ice burger, chili cheese fries, and chocolate shake from Fuddruckers stuck in my head. :p

The NSSA rules for Skeet and Sporting Clays are very clear....

a. no shot sizes bigger than 7 1/2's ....for a lot of reasons ...shot fall range being the primary issue.

b. No gun can be loaded ..until the shooter is on the shooting station. A gun is considered to be loaded - when you have any part of any shell in any gun. That means a shell in a magazine of a pump gun or a semi-auto makes it a "loaded gun" ... or an empty shell left in the chamber of a gun ( makes it a loaded gun ).

You cannot walk around a gun club ...whether its for Trap, Skeet, 5 Stand or Sporting Clays ....with shells in the magazine of a gun ...or it is a serious safety violation. It may not be a violation of - general gun safety from an NRA perspective ....or in a field when you're hunting birds...but its a clear violation for these games ....and its not "range specific" ...its a rule published nationally.

c. the loading of more than 2 shells in the gun shall not be allowed at any time. In some cases where you only have a single target - you may only load 1 shell. In Sporting Clays, 5 Stand, and Continental Trap it is ok to load 2 shells ..and fire 2 shells at a presentation of a single target ...and the target is dead, if you hit it with either shell.

But you can never load 3 shells in a magazine...or ever move around, off of the shooting station, with any shells in your chamber or your magazine...in and out of your vehicle, the grounds, parking lot, etc ...all actions have to be open, no shells in the magazine or chamber.

At many gun clubs ...even at a handgun range....I may be allowed to have a full magazine in a gun ...only if its in a holster. I am not allowed to take that gun from my holster....either empty, or with a mag in it - empty or not - let alone with a round in the chamber ...unless I am on the firing line. Guns have to remain cased ...put the case with the gun in it, on the firing line ...put your holster on ...step to the firing line, and then put the gun into your holster. No-one wants guns being waved around ...when they might be loaded ..or when they're empty. Its the same philosophy on a Trap, Skeet, 5 Stand or Sporting Clays range.

When I uncase a gun at the back of my vehicle at a shotgun club...in the parking lot...the first thing I do, is make sure its empty ...and lock the action back or break open the gun ...so everyone looking my direction knows its empty and safe. I carry it open / or locked open ...to and from the club house and the range. No shells in the gun / or magazine ...the shells are in my pocket and not touching the gun.

There are too many people ...is close proximity of eachother ...to do it any other way. If you do not follow those rules - at my gun club --- someone will ask you to open your gun / unload it --- if you have rounds in the mag ...and hopefully politely / because some guys have never been around an organized shotgun club.

My local handgun / rifle range is even more restrictive ....you can't just walk thru the parking lot ...or around the range - with a rifle, handgun or shotgun - in your hand / even if the action is locked open....it has to be cased or holstered - or you will be stopped and challenged / politely hopefully.

Not everyone has a lot of experience ...or good habits on handling firearms ...but no better time to learn than now / before an accident happens. The same rules apply to me ...even though I have a concealed carry permit ...and have been shooting shotguns, rifles and handguns for over 50 yrs ...that apply to a newbie handling his or her first weapon - no exceptions....and sometimes the older guys are the worst offenders...unfortunately ! We all need to be careful ...and safe !

Weatherby...they may have been the same guys. These were nice enough guys who probably didn't understand the problem with the depth of the shot fall area, even though I suspect they knew they weren't supposed to have those loads and wanted to practice with what they would using to hunt. The one guy even had a black web belt with high brass shells prominently displayed all around his waste, which is why I don't think he understood the difference between target loads and hunting loads, else he wouldn't have been wearng that belt.

Were they shooting tactical shotguns with short barrels?? If so, they might be the same guys..

Have you shot any more straights?

Yes... Three more... Got one with the new gun, I've been tight lipped about...

You s**k Weatherby. Three more straights and a new gun. Now you need the 50.

Seriously, congratulations.

No. These guys weren't shooting tactical guns. Standard hunting guns with walnut stocks.

there is no doubt you are doing the right thing. hopefuly others are witnessing
and will follow your lead. i have always felt that it is our responsibility to inform those with less experience or understanding to make them a better/safer sportsman for all of us. lets face it, ignorance can be dangerous. If it’s a matter of lack of respect…well than it’s a bad situation all the way around.

If a range rule is broken then I will politely point it out to the person. Our club posts the rules prominently throughout the property and if you are a guest you must sign a document saying you have read, understood and will follow the rules. If they slip up then I'm happy to remind them in a civil fashion. But if they persist then they will be reported and very likely escorted off the range and told not to return.

There are hundreds of millions, perhaps billions, of clay target shot in North America every year. Accidents are extremely rare because of the rules. The most important of which is "Open or Out" and where I shoot if you gun is not open when you are not on the firing line we really mean the "out" part.

My regular shooting partner asked me to let it go when the guys showed up with high brass shells. Otherwise I wouldn't inquire as to your opinion of whether or not I was being a bully by politley calling the rule to their attention.

Thanks KlawMan... Now the 50 is driving me CRAZY!!! And now dad is mad that he's having to pay attention to not get beaten :D

The first time I went to my current range, as a guest, a guy yelled at me for shooting my AR-15 .223 cal. at a target that signage says "NO Large Calibre Center Fire Rifles". I tried to tell him it is just a 22 and he wouldn't quite screaming long enough to hear me. Since I've joined the club I haven't seen the guy. If I ever do I will explain to him about screaming at a stranger with a loaded firearm in his hands.

...signage says "NO Large Calibre Center Fire Rifles"
That's crazy, whatz considered "large"? They should have been more specific, there's different ideas about large. I'm guessing it's larger than 22. Many ranges are limited to handguns and rim fire rifles because of their bullet stop capacity.

My club has a rule, "Guest must be accompanied at ALL times" -- but I don't think they mean the rest room, too. Some folks don't think before they post signs.

I don't know about your dad Weatherby ...but I'm only 61 ...and when one of the boys or the grandkids finally beats me ( and it'll happen sooner or later ) ...I'll be the first to congratulate them ...( but I'm not giving it away either ...) !

But it will happen to me ....and to him, one of these days ....but sure, why shouldn't he bring his favorite gun out ...and make you earn it ...it'll be sweeter when you really beat him, with his best weapon - for both of you !

If my boys ( in their 30's and 40's ) - or the grandkids ( teenagers and in their early 20's ) shot every week, like I do ...they would have beaten me a long time ago probably ....
