President Bush said Monday the economy is growing steadily and jobs are plentiful, but America must work harder to break its dependency on foreign oil. Making a Labor Day appearance at Maryland's Paul Hall Center for Training and Education, which offers vocational training to Seafarers International Union members, Bush said "dependence on foreign oil jeopardizes our ability to grow."

"Problem is, we get oil from some parts of the world and they simply don't like us," he said. "The more dependent we are on that type of energy, the less likely it will be that we are able to compete and so people can have good paying jobs."

Bush also said he is interested in new technology that advances that produce battery-operated cars and allows people to fuel their vehicles with ethanol, particularly in Farm Belt states. And he made a fresh push for greater development of nuclear energy.

"Nuclear power is safe and nuclear power is clean and nuclear power is renewable," the president said.

On trade, he said the United States must "continue opening markets to U.S. products."

"... My message to the world is this: just treat us as we treat you," Bush said. "I believe this country can compete anytime, anywhere, as long as the rules are fair."

Bush again called on Congress to make permanent a host of tax cuts, saying "I like it when people working for a living have more after-tax money in their pocket."

He said people in all walks of life should work hard to ensure that "our workers have the skills necessary to compete in the 21st Century."

Bush made a brief mention on the war and terrorism issue, thanking America's fighting men and women for their sacrifices and saying, "They may hear all the political discourse going on, but the people of this country the people of the United States of America stand squarely behind the men and women who wear our uniform."

JOBS ARE PLENTIFUL??????? Seen the unemployment rate lately??? Seen all the illegals working lately????

I like the idea of being self dependent on oil.

He barely mentions our people who are getting killed daily in "the war".

He barely mentions his "war on terrorism"

"Just treat us as we treat you?" I don't think other countries are happy the way we treat them. I certainly wouldn't them to treat us that way.Nagasaki,Hiroshima,Korea,Vietnam,Iraq,Iran,Israel,Russia, and on and on...

"Nuclear power is safe and clean??? Chernobyl, and other reactors haven't proven that to me.

Beaureaucratic bullcrap.

Actually, the unemploment rate is pretty low. Whether it is a good indicator or not any more is another question.

Illegals working means what? Too many illegals? Too many jobs?

Nagasaki? Hiroshima? Better then 500,000 US Marines, sailors and soldiers dying invading Japan - More of the enemy died in the 'normal' fire bombing of Tokoyo. Justified use of weapons of war against the ones who started the war. NOT using them since is a better indicator of how we deal with others.

Korea? Bet the South Koreans were/are glad we were there - AFTER the communist North invaded..

Vietnam? Yep - all those millions murdered by the communists after we left are much better off dead then free.

Iraq? Iran? Old and new threats that HAVE to be dealt with. Don't know your point with Israel and Russia (other then we have a great ally in the middle east and it is a good thing we won the cold war).

Uneducated drivel. Just don't vote for Bush next time.

Seen the unemployment rate lately
Yes. From ABC News 9/04/06

WASHINGTON Sep 1, 2006 (AP)— A hiring revival pulled the nation's unemployment rate down to 4.7 percent in August and flashed a Labor Day weekend message that the slowing economy isn't in danger of fizzling out.

Seen the unemployment rate lately???

Uh, yeah. It's at 4.6% and declining. The lowest it's been in 5 years and almost at the point of the 1999 4.2% that Clinton "lovers" point to. Please get the facts straight.

Alternative? Clean up oil drilling procedures and drill for oil in our country and waters.

Change the government through elections, written letters, phone calls,be heard from.Use our impeachment powers etc.

Study and refine procedures of nuclear power and use it if it can be "made safe and clean". But not until.

Put the running of the country back into the hands of the working people.

Close the borders. Any illegal breaches will be shot on sight. Soon the problem will stop.

Send all the illegals back if they don't want to go through the process of becoming a citizen.

Stop sending all our resources to countries that don't trade with us on a friendly basis.

Stop the spending and wasting money of government and big corps.

Arm the law abiding public to open carry. Anyone breaking the rules will lose all their guns and gun rights forever.

Stop and review the civil rights acts and change the BS as necessary.

Put the Constitution as law like it's supposed to be.

Anyone seen trashing America(such as the Mex. flag over the post office) will be shot . We do not need people like that alive in our country.

Anyone threatening America will be nuked to oblivion in the future. No 2-6 year waste wars. We don't take no ****.

9/1 Chicago Tribune:

"The nation's unemployment rate, which is based on a different survey than the one used to measure job creation, declined to 4.7 percent from the previous month's 4.8 percent reading, according to the Labor Department.

Many observers think unemployment, which is low by historical standards, will begin to creep up late this year or in early 2007.

Hourly wages a tad higher

Workers' average hourly earnings inched up 0.1 percent from July, to $16.79 in August. During the 12-month period that ended in August, though, hourly wages grew by a much larger 3.9 percent."

Parts of Virginia are down in the 2% range. Richmond is doing okay though...

"At 3.4 percent, greater Richmond had the fourth lowest unemployment rate when compared to the 50 largest U.S. metropolitan areas. Virginia's unemployment rate for June 2006 was tied for third lowest in the United States for the month, according to the VEC."

"Beaureaucratic bullcrap."

It was a Labor Day speech at a training center for goodness sake. What's the matter, you having a bad day? You know, Labor Day => labor, work, stuff like that.

I know, I know, "IT'S BUSH'S FAULT"

John

He barely mentions our people who are getting killed daily in "the war".

Trust me, the left brings it up enough. BTW, you DO realize that we have a "volunteer" army and that they are reenlisting at a record pace. The people fighting there believe in what they are doing. You act as though they have been drafted and sent there against their will.

He barely mentions his "war on terrorism"

1. He/the Administration mentions it frequently from what I can tell.
2. I thought the left said there is no war on terrorism--it's manufactured anger---they really like us.

What about the plummeting dollar? Anyone else notice that a dollar just doesn't seem to go as far for gas, guns, bullets, goods & services, etc. To bad those dastardly democrats wouldn't let the right have their estate tax...

Alternative? Clean up oil drilling procedures and drill for oil in our country and waters.
I mean, who is your alternative ? Are you making a veiled insinuation that we should have elected someone else last election ? Are you making a suggestion for the next election ?

As for drilling for oil in our country, I don't think it's the administration's fault that is being held up.

How about we just don't have ANY elected leaders next time around? We just take a 4 year hiatus on having any rulers. Complete anarchy will reign! Besides, the government that governs least...

The unemployment rate is a misleading indicator for economic health, because it does not take into account the people who have run out of unemployment benefits, only the new unemployment claims.

Ah, then the same would hold true for 1999 correct? Fact is that it is low. As for econimic health:

If you listen to the left, I can't see why anybody wants to come here? Maybe that's the plan they have for illegal aliens---tell them how bad it is here and maybe they won't come!;)

Not to mention that more people own homes then ever in history. How many peopledo you know that DON'T own more then 1 car, 1 TV, IPODS, Computers, Cell phones etc...Still can't figure out why people want to come here.

Mow, I may be wrong but I got, for $1.00 in 1992, it would cost $1.44 in 2006 for the same goods and services. That's an increase? What is a "CLI"?:rolleyes:

I've been better the last six years than the previous eight years. I have more savings, paid cash for more big purchase items, paid cash for my daughter's college education, she has a grand total of $400 in student loans after 4 years. Not bad considering in the Clinton years when it "booming", we qualified for welfare (never took it out of a sense of pride), and rarely had more than $25 left for two weeks after rent, utilities, food, and gas were paid. I'm financially better than I have ever been. At a time when everyone seemed to be yelling the economy the economy is tanking I was doing better than ever. It may not be true for all, but I know for me it was true.
An upside of the Clinton era, well I can't think of one, but I'm told there are some.

Can't speak for everyone, but in 1992 I didn't have that $1.00, but in 2006 I can afford to buy two at a $1.44
