Bear break in

last choice would be AR, second to last choice would be 45 with hollow points, if you said FMJ it would have ranked higher. .357 with HC would be 2nd choice only if couldn't get to 30-06 first. Those were the only two sensible choices in your scenario.

Mete, good to know assuming you live in a bear proof container..... I don't. I do live in NYS, right below the Tug Hill plateau.

30-06 all the way. If this was a pre-winter BIG FAT BEAR I am not sure what a 223/5.56 would do to it. 30-06 has lots of proven power. Really though none of those guns are PERFECT bear guns. A 12 gauge with slugs I would imagine would be close to #1, followed by maybe one of those .500 chambered S&W's or an AR with that 50 beowulf stuff chambered.

Bears break into locked houses all the time. Its not hard for a bear to pull a door right off it's hinges. I personally have had a bear break in and, although the door wasn't locked, he knew how to slide open the sliding glass door. I would think at close range a FMJ .223 from an AR, although wouldn't expand, would cause some serious bone damage and splintering, possibly enough to cause fatal damage and certainly enough to cause CNS or shoulder damage. If a FMJ .223 can go through a car door it can go through a bear's skull at close range. I dont know about you but I can fire off about a shot a second with a semi auto (reliable) AR. The reason why I chose these guns for this scenario is because each one of them at one point has been confirmed, in an emergency, to stop a brown bear attack.

Why wouldn't I use the 30-06???

Now, if it was really a zombie wearing a bear costume, I'd use my tacticool tacticooled, heavy fluted barrel, rails everywhere, night vision mounted, laser endowed AR15.....head shot only. :D

My house, where there are no grizzly bears - 12 gauge with slugs or a Judge in each hand loaded with bird shot and I'm wearing body armor.

Choice 1 - I think.

Since there are no Grizzles in my area I would know that it was a trained circus bear looking for a snack. I would give it a snack and have it perform tricks for me while I call the local animal control people to come get it. If it got angry because we ran out of honey I would shoot it 30 times with the AR.

30-06 all the way. Go for a one shot kill by CNS at 10 feet, you only need to point in the right direction or look along the side of the scope with the rifle canted a bit just aiming down the barrel. At 10 feet, how many shots do you think you will have with any weapon.

I keep my .44 magnum at my bedside in Idaho just for this one possibility although quite remote since we are not out in the boonies. I have at times kept my .444 beside my bed as well.

Go for the maximum penetration and place your one shot well. It should be enough.

I'm gonna take my chances with the .357 and those hardcast Buffalo Bores. If the bear gets shot, then upset and tackles me, at least I can keep shooting the revolver.

Don't have a problem with Grizzlies, do have a problem with black bears. 12 ga slugs are my choice for close encounters of the bear kind.

I have a 7.62X25mm ready for backup if two slugs to the head wouldn't do the job.

Bears are good at breaking into cabins, garages, machine sheds, any place they can smell what they might consider food oders. Best prevention is to keep the food oders to a minimum.

I'm not sure everyone gets it. 12 gauge with slugs is not an option. You can pretend any one of those four guns is a 12 gauge or a .44 or bear spray or even a 600 nitro express though but it won't change what they actually are! ;)

hide in the bathroom.....cause you know bears only poop in the woods. :D
30-06 from the hip. Throw the AR at the bear and shoot him with the 30-06 while he is trying to get the safety off the AR.

Under the circumstances you decribe, I would choose the .45 (too bad you won't let me have have my .44 Redhawk) I would try to hit the bear in the head/face as much as I can, within the decribed range, before I completely destroy my eardrums for good.

duh

What were the choices again?

At 10' you could have a 40mm chain gun and it would be useless unless ursulus horribilus (sp?) stopped and posed for the shot. If that was the case I'd definitely choose the round that delivered the most energy and penetration.

What were the choices again and could you post some ballistics tables of those original posted choices? Was a 12 ga. with slugs in there?

What were the choices again?
Feeling a little dumb today or just being a smart aleck. Why are you responding if you didn't read the OP. Be nice now and answer the question as asked.

Didn't see a single thing in the OP about 12 gauge slugs or 44 mags or 20MM anti aircraft cannons or any other silly stuff you guys are coming up with.
