Be Careful Guys

I just woke up a moment ago to terrible pain. My jaw hurts from the impact i guess.

The first thing i did was log onto TFL to find lots of messages from you guys, thank you. It makes a huge difference.

Ill gather myself and post.

I really appreciate it guys. Be careful when shooting and inspect the backstop.

If you go to "the alley" you know that the material that the pins sit on is wood, and after you knock them over you don't even have to go set them up again; it just happens!

Seriously, speedy recovery!

Thank God you're OK, Amin. I'd have a chat with the range master or whoever is responsible for the facility. Guess your medical bills were paid by some kind of insurance from the range or from yourself, but once there's been an incindent like this, the next and unavoidable step (from their side) is to take action so it doesn't happen again.

Wish you a quick and complete recovery.

The worse is always a day or so after. You get by today/tomorrow and its a gradual improvement from there. Then the bruising/discoloration starts and you'll look like 'Rocky Balboa'.

Do they have you rinsing with any medicated rinse to keep infection down?

Also, something that you can try to keep pain down is sleeping in a comfortable chair/recliner, keeping head elevated and ice on your jaw. Kinda helps with the jaw throbbing caused by impact.

PS. NO! I'm not a doctor but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn last night.:D

Again, best wishes. I am sure you have reflected on several ways in which it could have been much worse, but it is bad enough as it is.

I have to say that I am envious that you can get in and out of an ER in half an hour. Around here, you can spend 3 or 4 hours getting a couple of stitches.

Just take it easy and take good care of yourself. Ask for whatever pain meds you need. There is no virtue to pain - it slows healing, stresses the body and mind, and causes fatigue akin to depression. Keep us posted on how you are doing.

Shortwave and tailgator, u two actually reminded me to take my meds, thanx. Shortwave appreciate your advice, u sure u not a doctor?

Tfl members, my fellow shooters locally, you guys are really great. I had many calls, emails wishing me well. We shooters really are a community, we are indeed blessed because no other sport or hobby has this bond that stretches all over the world.

I did some investigation and it turns out i was hit by a fmj that possibly bounced off a rock in the back stop. This makes sense but unfortunately i now know who the shooter was.

There is a lesson here for all shooters, especially me:

I was timing for this shooter earlier in the day and saw fmj rounds in his magazines. I did nothing to stop the shooter even though i knew it could cause a ricochet. Fortunately it was me who caught the ricochet in the end and not someone else. I would have felt worse than i do now had it hit another shooter.

Safety first, dont hesitate. If you see something unsafe stop that shooter immediately. I really dont want anyone else to get hurt on a range.

Glad to hear you will recover.

Thanks for the post. I was hoping to observe a bowling pin shoot in my area someday. If I go and see that they have metal tables; I will leave rather than risks a ricochet.

Your post brought back a memorie of my wife taking me to the ER. I was grinding on some metal working on a car when a piece came off and went into my upper lip. I could wag it up and down with my tounge :) they super glued it closed and sent me on my way.

But that wasnt the last ER visit we had, she was riding her dirt bike and went over, the clutch lever came back over the bar and clipped her finger off.

I call her 9 and a half :) she calls me lippy.... :)

Guys the bowling pins themselves will cause rebounds. I had a 45acp bounce off the back of my hand while waiting my turn at a bowling pin match. A young girl was hit in the leg on the same string. Neither of us was injured more than a bruise. Our tables were 100 percent wood except for nails. Shooter cleared the pins without a miss so no nails were hit.

This caused the range to ban bowling pins. :(

Newbold makes self sealing targets including ones that look like bowling pins that prevent rebounds and take 1000's of hits.

A few years ago I was shooting pins with a 9mm and ricochet hit me square on the end of the big toe. I was wearing running shoes so there was little protection. Some bleeding and discolouration but it sure made me dance a jig.

I never liked dense bowling pins as reactive targets.

Heck, I kicked the head of the range, where I was a lowly uniformed range officer for a local government, out of a falling-plate match and I wasn't even running it -- it was a private match. This sleaze, Bianchi, was using 9mm Ball. Not only was this dangerous but it damaged the plates including creating "hot spots" that would cause ricochets but, heck, he didn't own them personally!

Back in the day, most of the pin shooters I knew wore bushy beards and aviator glasses. Being younger, I thought it was just a generational thing. I soon learned better when a piece of jacketing zapped me hard enough to stick in the right lens of my glasses.

It's a "one in a million" thing, but shoot long enough, and those odds start to close up. There's a lesson about safety and complacency there.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Amin!

I too wish you the best. I shoot pins here in Nebraska. Our tables are 3/4" chipboard on plastic 55 gal. barrels. The bullits rip up the tables pretty good. We have found a bullit or 2 behind the line when we clean up. I think they come off the pins not the table like yours may have. You said that it could have come off rocks in the backstop. How far is the backstop from your line? I hope if you like shooting pins as much as I do this won't kill the fun for you. On the other hand there has never been a better reason to change disaplines. I can only wish you well.

Uh..... none of that sounds good at all. Glad you are healing and it didn't go elsewhere and to a location more vital. However, your wife may enjoy the silence, since I"m sure it hinders you talking... and now all you can do is listen to her.

One reason I do not like shooting around others......

Hi everyone and thank you again for the well wishes.

I feel much better today, the pain is significantly less and i just came from my doctor who checked for an infection. Fortunately there is no infection and stitches will be removed on Monday.

Well, as a gun nut i found myself in a gun shop en route and had a look at 2 Spitfire pistols, one with a comp and the other without. They are beautiful are they not?

After lots of thinking, and as i got less and less upset, i have to report that i will be resuming my shooting 2 weeks after my stitches are removed. I will take part in the next competition and will be part of the National Championships held in September. I cannot let my team, my province, my sport and shooters the world over down by walking away from my passion that brings me so much joy.

I am Amin Parker, Bowling Pin Shooter, hopelessly addicted handgunner, handgun collector and certified gun nut FOREVER. Targets, Bowling Pins, Steel Plates beware.
