BAN SUV's

I found the Suburban a bit small. Currently usin an E350 monster van. 20'6" from front hitch to rear hitch. Winch set ups at both ends, knarly tires and rock and brush marks all over it. Max wt 12,000 and max pull 12,000. Can get a 12 foot boat inside and a 16 ft boat on top. Taint purty but it knows a fair amount of Arizona that aint on the road maps. I don't hit people but if they want to tush with me, no big deal. Not gonna ugly mine any more than it already is.

For paved trippin my adopted VW diesel Wabbitt makes up for the mileage I don't get with the big un.

The winch set ups are not for if I get stuck, they are for when I get stuck.

Sam......follow me, I know a short cut.

I agree completely that a station wagon is a better vehicle for a lot of the soccer moms driving SUVs. Frankly, a lot of them scare the hell out me.

My point was that if start banning certain types of automobiles, we're no better then a lot of the anti-gunners. Ban one thing, move to the next.

When I'm not towing or off-roading, I drive my Nissan 300zx. It's the complete opposite because I'm REALLY low to the ground. Seeing a soccer mom tailgate me in her Excursion is nerve racking.

I drive an SUV.

I have to say I get as pi$$ed off with people who call them "urban assault vehicles" (the "in" term here) as you guys do when people call your semi-auto centrefire an "assault rifle".

Why did I buy it? One word -- versatility. I can tow, cart heavy weights, go off-road -- if I choose. That's the point -- if I choose.

We already have a push here to ban them unless you can show "need". (Gee -- same as guns!) And bullbars (dunno what you call 'em) are very much under the spotlight (no pun intended) at present. There are moves to make us remove them unless we live in the country.

It really gets my goat!!

Let's look at some of the "charges" against us:

"slow and bargelike" -- my 4WD has an inline Mercedes Benz 3.2 litre 6-cylinder that puts out 220 hp -- it sh*ts on most "family" cars!!

"poor handling" -- compared to what!!??!! My sister-in-law's Celica? Yes. perhaps. My father's Mitsubishi Magna?? Not a chance!!!

What else?? Let's see: constant 4WD -- great for wet road handling; ABS brakes -- saved me from a rear-ender less than a fortnight ago; tyres -- Pirelli Scorpions are actually pretty bloody good; top-heavy? -- maybe, but my car is designed to keep everything as low as possible and between the wheels; even the fuel tank is forward of the rear wheels; fuel economy? -- just did the figures; 23 mpg around town (admittedly taking it easy) and 28 mpg in the country at 110 km/h.

Do I "dawdle" along? No, I enjoy driving and using the power of the car, without being a hoon.

My driving record? 33 years; booked for parking in 1968 -- nothing since. Accidents? three -- (1) hit by two drunk and stoned teenagers who ran a Stop sign; (2) hit by a bloke who cut across an intersection without signalling; and (3) (mea culpa) broke the tail-lights of the bloke in front of me at a Stop sign when he started to move off and hit the anchors for no reason except he changed his mind.

I am a defensive driver: 33 years of driving (and riding motorcycles) has taught me one thing -- treat every other person on the road as a total frickin' idiot!

So don't tell me I'm not "safe" in my SUV; don't tell me I cause accidents; don't tell me I can't drive one!

Amen to that Bruce. I have noticed that when I'm in my truck, everyone's an idiot, but when I'm on my bike, everyone's a homicidal idiot who's out to get me.

As to the Ssangyong Musso, I've never heard of it, but OTOH, I was busy dodging maniacal drivers who insisted on driving on the wrong side of the road. The odd thing is the signs seemed to be set up for people to drive backwards. Hmmmm... Maybe it was me...Nah, had to be them.

Eric:

My introduction to driving in the USA was in a Suzuki Sidekick, from Kennebunkport to DC -- on the wrong side of the road -- on the wrong side of the car -- with the gearchange on the wrong side -- in a snowstorm -- at 75 mph.

Do you guys know your rear-view mirror's on the wrong side :D?

And all the driver info sign's are on the right instead of the left?

And you go the wrong way around roundabouts?

BTW, the Ssangyong Musso is now sold under the Daewoo brand. It's Korean, but with a Mercedes engine and gearbox. Mine was assembled in Germany; later models are asembled in Korea. I like mine better ;)
