Attracted to a gun because of a cartridge . . .

Size isn't why, but a 5" .45 is more pleasant to shoot than a 4" 9mm. Both using cast bullet loads. Moreso with jacketed.

I start with the bullet I want to launch (a .452" diameter 200 grain SWC at 800 fps), pick a cartridge (I chose .45 auto over .45 Colt because I wanted an auto), then pick a gun to fit the cartridge (HK45C because HKs feed SWCs reliably).

Thinking about a Ruger SA convertible revolver in .45 auto/.45 Colt as a second big bore.

Go Vikes!

There is a reason you picked up that .45acp brass, now go and deal with it.

You can't go wrong with a Colt Series 70 if you don't mind paying for it.

Hammerhead - I am a lifelong Vikings fan! And get that Blackhawk! You will love it, and it won't choke in the Super Bowl. :)

Now I find myself wanting a 45 acp just for the fun of a semi-auto in a large caliber.

If you're looking for an argument to talk you out of buying a firearm, much less a 1911, you have definitely come to the wrong place!

My first .41 mag was a Blackhawk, didn't much care for the single action type gun. Got rid of it for my M57, but now I want a .45 Colt and am rethinking getting a single action, and a Henry lever to go with it.

I bought a set of used dies, sold to me as 380ACP. Turns out they are for 38 Super, wasn't mad paid next to nothing for the dies. BUT now its going to cost me, after looking into the 38 Super I'm going to have to buy myself new gun. I have dies for it so it can't stop myself

Nodak, that is definitely NOT a bad thing :D

Odds are that once you start exploring it, you'll find that its a heck of a caliber for competition :)

I have my 1911 because I love 45 acp. 9mm guys say the difference in terminal performance is not important but check this out:

45 HST gel test

See the wound channel cross section at around 3:30. I find that pretty hard to argue against!

Get one, you won't regret it. Well, maybe your wallet will when it's time to buy ammo, but they're really fun to shoot. There's also something pretty reassuring about slinging 230gr chunks of lead. I went with an HK 45 and I absolutely love it. Pricey, but worth every penny.

I was close to getting a 1911, but I wanted more capacity and I kept reading that they're finicky. I would either get a Springfield 1911(good customer service), a Glock 21, or an HK anything. The Glocks 12+1 capacity is pretty nice, and it's on my to buy list.

I had to have a 45 semi-auto, too. Mine's a XD45 Tactical. I liked the look of it, and it fit my hand best of the double stack 45's available when I bought it. Love it.

I also have a Taurus Tracker 455 .45ACP revolver. I got that one because my wife prefers shooting revolvers. I just thought it was a cool little 5-shooter, and it is. I rarely see those when I'm browsing gun forums or gun selling websites--not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

Caliber-wise, I bought a Ruger Blackhawk convertible in 38-40/10mm because the calibers were unusual (and very different, shooting-wise). Fortunately (or unfortunately) both were very hard to find and expensive. This lead to tooling up for reloading, something I really hadn't considered for years. Now I'm so glad I took it up as I reload for everything I own except .22 !

Myself, I have always liked the 1911 platform, and obviously the traditional 45ACP that comes with it.
Don't bash the sacred cow!!

Lately I've been looking at a Ruger LCRX in 38 special +P for the Fiance, and a Ruger in 327 Federal for me.

I got rid of anything that was just flat out 40....

Thoughts and comments . . . ?
Yup, I can relate to that. I lusted after and bought a Colt Combat Commander in the seventies because the .38 Super seemed rare and exotic. I have never regretted my decision although the gun itself was out of spec. As a handloader and bullet caster, the availability of ammo was of no concern.

This is my .38 Super Colt Combat Commander as it is today...modified from the original configuration. pachmayr grips, grip safety, new trigger, new barrel, new slide, new sights.

Well, the only reason I bought a pair of Uberti reproduction 1871/72 Colt open tops was because they were chambered for 44 Special.

But a semi-auto? Not really. Those are always 9mm.

Imwanted to play in the Tokarev and Makarov worlds, for no logical reason save that I have played in most of the other cartridges, PLUS ComBloc guns are pretty cheap on the used market.

So I have ended up with the CZ52 and Zastava M57 to feed my 7.62x25 jones and a CZ82 and FEG PA-63 to feed my 9x18 curiosity.

The major downside to thus approach is that you want to play with other variations on the theme.....

Somehow, I didn't expect to read one response saying, "no, you'll hate the .45. Ignore that urge, and don't buy one." And I won't be the first. I have several styles of .45 autos; 1911s, revolvers, and a non-1911 Ruger P90. All have their own personalities, and all are very enjoyable to shoot. I do reload, so it's more affordable to shoot more often and being able to tailor the load makes the shooting even more enjoyable. Go for it!
