As long as we're being honest....

Just started carrying the G21 last month, put 200 rounds through it just to get comfortable, and it devoured them without hesitation. Not much of a long-term record.

My G19 choked on two or three rounds when I first got it, 800 rounds later, have not had another malfunction.

While I had her, my FNP-9 failed to eject two rounds out of about 1500. That was pretty damn good in my book.

Maybe not perfect, but I count all of those as being good enough for me to carry/have carried them without worry.

I have two Springfield Mil-specs that were used in IPSC competition for about 8 years and have NEVER malfunctioned. Not once. Not when new and not after they both had a lot of custom work done. I don't carry either one for self defense. I have two revolvers that I have carried daily for many years, a Charter Bulldog Pug that I have carried since 1987 and a S&W 696 that I have carried since 1996 that also never malfunctioned (and have had many thousands of rounds put through them.) I like .44 Spls.

For autos, I'd say my most dependable is my Arcus 94, yes the Bulgarian copy of a High Power. It just seems to cycle almost everything. Even slightly out of spec reloads that give my S&W 639 fits. Yes, I carry it often.
For revolvers, my favorite carry pieces are a 6 1/2" S&W 610 and a 442. The big N frame has never had a hicup, even when I use it at bowling pins with hot handloads. Carry's easy in a Bianchi vertical shoulder rig under my ever present vest.

I ccw a revolver (S&W 640 in 357 magnum) I carry it cause I have never had a problem with it.

Other than my Taurus Judge  I have never had problems with any of my revolvers.

My autos have been pretty reliable but I have had an occasional stove pipe (probably my fault)

The thing is when I carry a gun that my life may depend on I want it to be 100% a failure in a gun, (even if it is my fault) can be a very bad thing when you depend on it to work right, so that is why I carry the gun I do, I enjoy my other guns (even my Taurus Judge) some even more than my revolvers (such as my Ruger 22lr semi automatic) but I don't use them as a carry weapon cause I don't have complete trust in them.

Actually, to my surprise and delight, my Ruger LCP has never malfunctioned. It just routinely digests whatever ammo I put through it.

I've shot mostly Win and PMC FMJ loads, but have put a box and a half of Cor-Bon DPXs (my carry load) through it.

I have at least 2 other autos that I now consider 100% reliable, my Taurus PT-145 Millennium Pro, and my Detonics .45, but both had some minor break-in issues when new.

I have several revolvers that are 100% reliable, but had my old S&W Model 60 break the internal latch, jamming the revolver and rendering it useless. Fortunately, happened on the range instead of the street!

No such thing as a 100% reliable firearm.....all brands & types included. Having said that, revolvers are generally more reliable. Semi's are completely at the mercy of ammo, while a revolver can get a second change by just pulling the trigger. Also, nose shape, weigh, etc. has no real effect on revolvers.

Now to add a little perspective, I had a failure once on my GP100 (purchased new). The front part of the small cylinder latch spring & rod broke off and jammed the pistol from opening. So revolvers can fail.

PS: I carry both. But probably carry my Glock 36 more than others.

I carried revolvers for the first 15 years of my career Never had it fail at the range or in the field. This was a S&W Model 10 4" HB, Model 64 3" HB, Model 36 2", and a model 36 3" HB. Also a pre 68 colt detective special while undercover.

The last 10 years I carried an auto-loader as my service pistol. A glock 19. I also carried a khar[sp] Off duty. For a period I also carried a Browning BDA in .380. All the above pistols served me as well as the revolvers. I never experienced a malfunction with any of them.

Based on my experience, and in my humble opinion... Revolvers are only as reliable as the person caring for, and relying on them.

Also based on my my experience, modern autiloaders are as reliable as revolvers when properly cared for, and properly handle'd

Everything has it's trade-off. Revolvers tend to be more reliable. With semi's you get higher capacity & faster fire rate...well unless you are Jerry Miculek.:)

Carried both and both have failed at one time or another but only two failures would have put me out of action. One was a cracked slide on a 45 and the other was overly long hand loads in .357 Mag that hung up and it was interesting getting that one undone.

I have no problems carrying either because I shoot every gun often enough that if I am going to have any problems they will show up sooner rather than later at a more inopportune time.

That's a good point. Most problems show up early, so shooting a new firearm often when you first purchase is good insurance.

I routinely carry a Ruger P-90 .45 ACP and also a Ruger SP-101 .357 for backup. Have carried both concealed for many years now, with zero malfunctions from either one...ever. My department-issue Sig P220ST can't say likewise. :barf:

I have a P90, great pistol, but I always considered it a little large for CCW. I am small framed. How do you carry your P90??

PS. I carry a Glock 36 (.45ACP daily).

Madmag: It has a lot to do with body size of the individual. I'm medium-framed, 6'3, 215 lbs. I also run and lift weights, and so my waist is narrow while my back is broad. This gives a kind of "curtain effect" when wearing a loose fitting, un-tucked shirt that allows me to effectively conceal a full-sized pistol. I use an IWB holster, by the way. Doing so might be more of a challenge for a small-framed individual. However, in Winter, wearing a coat should help you tremendously, especially if you use an OWB. Hope this helps. :)

Yeah, probably won't work for me. I do have a pistol specific waist pack that holds my P90 with no issue.

Thanks for the answer.

I did have a 686 tie up on me once. Had to go to the gunsmith. Most malfunctions with autopistols are cleared by me. They are rare and I have a few guns that have had none.

Revolvers are probably more reliable. Most people you see with them at the range shoot them single action. In a SD situation you don't want to be cocking a DA revolver. There are a lot of people who shoot the revolver pretty well in single action and can't hit a thing in DA mode.

My list of never failed autos:
1. Ruger P-89. Several thousand rounds without a hiccup.
2. Glock 29.
3. Glock 32.
4. Ruger SR9c - This gun is still has a low round count but is looking really good so far!

Never had a revolver fail on me unless you count rimfire .22s where the cartridge misfired.

Madmag: Not a problem. Sounds to me like you've already worked out how to carry anyway...no need to mess with success! Take care.

I've never carried any firearm that has malfunctioned. That includes a Glock 26, and 19, a Kimber Ultra Carry II, a Smith and Wesson SW1911, 442, and an M&P9.

I used to carry a S&W M-19, then a S&W M-66 and then a Ruger GP-100. None of them ever misfired or failed to work at any time.

Being a semi-auto lover, I was very excited when we switched to the Beretta 92F. I had 1-2 stove-pipes over the years (since 1985). I say "1-2" because I honestly can't remember if it happened once or twice. Once I replaced all the mags, it fires flawless.

We now carry Sig 226 in .40. That gun has never failed. Several thousand rounds thru it and no failure to fire. Funny thing, that's not even one of my favorite handguns and it performs perfectly so far.

I have an XD-45 that had one infamous (I made a thread here about it) failure to fire. After getting it back from SA, I still carry it off duty. To be honest though, it's kind of like a cheating wife. You never really trust it 100% again.

My Glock 23 and Glock 21SF have functioned 100%. I have a S&W 4506 that has functioned flawlessly also.

Now for the bad. I have a Rock Island Armory .45 that is still a newb. Less than 250 rounds thru it. But it still has problems feeding. Not HPs either, I'm talking about 230 gr ball. Of course, that is last on my list to ever take outside for SD.

I have a few others like the KelTec .380 and some revolvers, but I never carry them on my person outside.

The only one I feel kinda unsure of is that ol' XD-45. But I love it so I'm giving it another chance. (:D). I do admit to taking it out less often though.
