are ar 15s really that bad?

Most AR-15 problems are due to owners using poor quality magazines, poor quality eastern European ammo, or not enough lubrication.

Well said and worth a rerun.;) Prevent maintenance always a big issue with moving parts, not the "I threw her in the mud ran 5000 rounds without cleaning and she still going strong", yep until you really need her.

I don't know if anyone has said it through the scanning of posts but a good magazine has an Anti-tilt follower. The description of the magazine online will list it if it has it.

It is like any other machine, take care of it and it will do the same. But please get your immunization for the fanboy virus, no one likes a complete snob.

hello everybody. i really really really want an ar 15. im looking now at the palmetto state armory chrome lined 16 inch carbine for around 600. now that im reading more on them, people say they jam constantly. are they really that bad and unreliable?

you have been talking to idiots and/or fools, the AR-15 is one of the most reliable firearms available to us citizens, i have been shooting one (a Colt AR-15, SP-1) since they were put on the civilian market, don't get me wrong, there were/are some real pieces of crappy junk to stay away from, i believe you will be good to go with the Palmetto gun.

I've never been a fan of the direct-impingment action on ARs because, being left-handed, ever AR I've ever shot has flung propellant gases into my eyes, and I don't particularly care for the whole concept in the first place... poop where you eat and all that

have you ever fired a piston AR ? if not find someone who has one, ask him/her if you can try it out then run a 20 round mag full of ammo thru it, then come back here and report your experience. OK ?

Poop where you eat originated with a old vet who had a ramp up M16 fail him in the field. 1) The ammo powder was a problem and corrected, 2) Tight chambered guns were gauged and replaced, 3) Chrome lined chambers were reinstituted as milspec, the budget cutters were told hands off, 4) Cleaning kits were issued, along with oil, and Command told to check they were being used, 5) the 30 round mags were downloaded to 28, too much spring pressure from the cheap design.

Since about 1974, no major problems have existed UNLESS YOU SHOOT CHEAP IMPORT UNDERPOWERED AMMO. The AR was designed for FULL POWER military loads, and they are required to have full gas pressure ie. 3,000 FPS ammo. Not cheap plinker crap.

Check ANY self loading action - the bolt unlocks before the gas pressure is totally relieved, and the case actually extracts on the M16 from that pressure. The Army actually has video online of an M16 cycling with NO extractor, it runs. With that much pressure blowing past the case, you get dirty brass, and gas residue in the action.

The "poops where it eats" comment is one of those negatively meant accusations thats actually true - but the deliberate lie is that the M16 is unique in that. Nope, had a HK91, and that gun rates twice as dirty, the delayed roller lock action is really inertia blowback, and it gets nasty. So do all my auto pistols and the 10/22. They ALL poop where they eat. So does the M60, M249, M17, M2, and a few others I've cleaned.

AK's do it too. Dirty brass, dirty bolt. The guy who started that expression was actually right, it's the AR haters showing their ignorance about guns that's actually funny.

I've owned many different DI ARs and never had a problem with any of them.

I now own a piston driven AR-100 that has an adjustable gas system, I went with this for suppressor useage.

No problems here.

Most people who talk about Ar's jamming have no clue what they're talking about. they heard that story second hand and have little to no experience with these weapons.

Little tip, if you plan on pouring a cup of sand inside your weapon, go with an ak, but if you plan on rolling in the dirt while shooting but thats pretty much it, and AR will serve you well.

P.S. 600 sounds pretty cheap, double cheak and make sure that barrel is crome lined and not "crome molly."

Stop reading about the AR-15 over on the Mini-14.com site and you won't have any doubts about the AR's reliability!

Absolutely horrible guns! Everyone please send me yours for disposal. :)

I have never had any problems with any of the AR's I own, or those of friends I have shot, as long as it is a quality, in-spec firearm, using in-spec mags and ammo. When you start trying to save a buck or two, you may wind out sacrificing some reliability. YMMV

I have over 1000 rounds through my Bushmaster and I never had a jam. I clean it maybe every two, three hundred rounds. I'd trust my life with it.

Ya know, I don't think the US military would keep a bad platform in service as long as the AR has been if it was so problematic. Keep it clean and use quality mags & ammo and you too will fall in love.

I have had very good luck with my Bushmaster as well...although I did rebuild & restake the BCG key just for my own peace of mind.

I've put a couple hundred rounds of Tul Ammo through my Bushmaster AR-15 since I recently purchased it. I have not had 1 issue yet with feeding, firing, or ejecting. I use the stock magazine, and a second Magpul magazine. Both of them have worked fine.

I also clean my gun every other time I take it out. When I do clean it, I take it down completely and clean and lightly oil all parts. Even though I have been told that Tul is 'dirty' ammo, the gun is no worse off than my other guns which I shoot brand name ammo through.

just buy it

I recently got a Rifle kit from Palmetto (everything but a stripped lower), and it runs like a champ. I use cheap brass, reloads, the cheapest of the cheap steal case tula ammo and back to brass without a problem. Oh and im terrible and haven't cleaned it yet besides when I was putting it together.

but your right everything you read on the internet must be true:rolleyes:

Just buy it and have some fun with it
