Anyone looking forward to hunting season?

I put in for two bison draws and a cow moose draw. Won't know the results until the end of the month. If I don't get drawn I'll still be able to moose hunt anyway. The cow tag would just give me an extra opportunity.

For now I'm contented with winching halibut up off the bottom of the Pacific and netting some red salmon.

Pulled up seven last week. My share worked out to about 35 lbs of fillets.:D

Dove season opens Sept. 1 so I'm planting my field right about now. I also do nuisance wildlife work and fish which keeps me in the woods and waters. Plus, I'm reloading and shooting a lot to stay sharp.

Mixed feelings about this......one part of me looks forward to the hunting, down side is knowing it'll be another year dealing with tresspassers and the increasing number of slob hunters.

Sheep Season

Sheep season is less than two months away.

I have my mileage up to 6 runs per week with 3-6 miles per run in the evenings

I lift five times per week with a double split for bodyparts.(bb with powerlifting)
Squats are at 500lbs for 6 reps.
Bench is at 365lbs for 6 reps 225lbs for 22reps.
five sets of pullups 20reps, 15reps, 12reps, 12 reps, 12 reps,

I'm 6ft and weigh 240lbs and need to get down to 230lbs for sheep season.
I want to get fat percentage down under 12%.

I shoot twice per week.
once per week with hunting rifle.

I bought brand new bibler mountain tent and ID sleeping bag.

I will go out to the mountains at the end of the month after jury duty is over.
I will then work on packing trips and climbing the slide a 3000ft shale slide .5 miles from our house in Chitina with 60lb pack.

Then I will be ready.

One question.
I find myself having to stretch out more and more as I get older.
I am only 38 so I hope that it doesn't get too much harder to keep
tendons and joints happy. I take supplements but it still ticks me off because
my muscles feel good just my joints get sore.

Where the Hell is Chitina?

This is the most common bumpersticker found out in Chitina which
is about 120 miles inland by road from Valdez, Alaska.

Chitina has about 100 residents.
It gets about 20,000 visitors seeking to dip net copper river red salmon and tourists going to McCarthy.

I presently teach in Fairbanks, Alaska.

I have taught out in the Bush(Ambler and Nulato) and grew up in Lower Tonsina which is a tiny community on the road to Chitina.

I have a lifetime 13.44 hunting permit for Wrangell St.Elias National Park but
right now sheep populations in the area that I hunt in the park aren't great-they are giving the local trappers who curtail the wolf population too much grief- so I am hunting in an open area of the Chugach Mts.
It is a good area but you have to be a real "beast" to hunt it.

Sincerely,
Thomas

Ok, NOW I'm looking forward to it. Basically when August hits, it starts to get exciting, when we're only 1 month from dove season and 2 months from bow season (deer & turkey). Several things have lined up to get me a little stirred up:

-First and foremost, I lucked out on the lottery draw for a controlled hunt at McAlester AAP, which I'll post about separately (if you are from Okla, you know what this is)

-As a result of THAT, I'm presently searching for a recurve to buy for that hunt

-My compound bow is presently at the pro shop getting re-strung, cabled, and new fletching put on 6 of my arrows.

-I've gotten over my trepidation about hunting with excess meat in the freezer by simply making the mental decision that I will simply contribute any deer to Hunters for the Hungry until I start getting low on meat. Luckily, almost all processors in the state are participators in the H.F.T.H. program, so it's easy to drop the deer off and pay the processing fee to help out the needy. Turkeys I'm keepin!

It's time to buy some new straw bales and start to practicing my archery by mid-August.

:)

I flung about 500 arrows this last weekend prepping for elk. I just rigged up a hanger by my "range" and everytime I walked by, I shot 10 arrows. The worst part of getting older for me is my bow muscles don't last from year to year like they used to. By Sunday night, I could barely hold a glass of water. I used to shoot a 85 lb compount and a 70 lb recurve and could take 11 months off and not miss a beat...:(

I'm planning on going up to the lease this weekend and fill the feeder and setup the game camera. Probably set up a ladder stand so I can hunt my area with my RSRH 44mag.

Mainly get a better picture of where I will need to clear cut, on my next trip up.

Just picked up some 240gr Hornady XTP's. Got a burris handgun scope on the way. I am going to start developing loads for my Ruger SBH........

I will get a deer this year with a revolver!

Who isn't??

Got my 870 already sighted in for the big bucks here in indiana.....but i plan to make sure it is sighted in a few more times. :)

I have a specific mission for this year: take at least one buck so that I have antlers from which to carve wedding rings for my lady and I to get married next year.

Thats pretty cool Yellowfin. My goal this hunting season is to be able to fit into my BDU's that I wore when I got off Active Duty!!! Ohhh the battle of the bulge..

Yellofin: "I have a specific mission for this year: take at least one buck so that I have antlers from which to carve wedding rings for my lady and I to get married next year."

That's quite romantic on your part, but is your intended on-board with this? Normally, brides want gold rings. They may settle for something else, but would probably be happier with gold. If you can't afford a gold ring, maybe you can't afford to get married. Take it from a someone who's been married for over 40 years.

I didn't make the bison draw, but I got a moose tag for any bull in a spike/fork-50" area that has boatloads of 30 inchers running around.

If I can get a cow moose registration tag for the same area, I can't lose..... go in whack the first critter that crosses in front of my sights and call it good.:D

Kaboku68,

We've both tread on the same ground.;)

Heck, the deer season here opens this saturday. Got my Marlin all cleaned and ready, got my ammo, my maps, my tag and all my gear ready to load in the pickup. My son and I'll be huntin' BLM land come sun-up!

Wishin' I was back in old Kentucky, maybe next year :(

I've been looking forward to opening day since closing day last season. I cleared a bigger shooting area and planted alfalfa this spring and winter peas last week. A friend told me that alfalfa wouldn't grow in Georgia but it does and the deer love it , got a nice rub 15 ft. into the trees from my feed plot and got a look at the 8 pointer that made it yesterday evening, so, all looks good , of cource that 8 will probably be nowhere to be seen come opening day.
