Anyone else ever noticed this?

I overheard this conversation:
Guy wants ammo for his hunting rifle, one he's used for a few seasons.
Clerk asks what caliber.
He says "Remington."
Clerk says "That's the ammo manufacturer, what caliber?"
Guys says "No, it's for a Remington rifle."
And this goes on and on.
The guy had no idea that Remington rifles came in more than one standard caliber.
He actually thought they all were the same one.
I left before the conclusion, not being able to keep a straight face any longer.

A lady friend, old and liberal, is getting kind of scared living alone these days.
I offer to help her pick out a pistol and get training, figuring that should give her some peace of mind.
Nope, not for a liberal, no guns for her.
So, I brought her a very realistic looking air pistol, without pellets, of course.
She liked that ok.
She wouldn't actually want to hurt anyone who might be mugging and raping her.
Hope she's sleeping soundly.

My all time favorite.

"They made it so it could shoot through engine blocks."

Proof the person saying it does'nt know his donkey from a hole in the ground.

I get this at WalMart every time. Now granted, this is only WalMart, but I don't even ask questions that require that much knowledge. I only go there for ammo (which is very cheap) and I walk up to the cashier and say "I need 2 boxes of .40 180 grain Federal ammo". They will stare at me and if I could hear their thoughts, I'm sure it would sound like "40...cal? 1...80...grain?" Then I go to the cabinet and point to the box. If I had to ask a real question, I'd ask another customer. Why do these people work in sporting goods?

Hey, I believe you CajunBass, wasn't I on your team ;-). Actually I'm with Nasty, do your own research and spend the time at the counter chumming (and then who cares what the stories are, just listen in and share them here, they're great reading!). I have 2 guys I've met at the counter that I like and both seem to know their stuff well. There's a new girl there too that I'm not sure of yet but she's nice and likes to shoot handguns so that's a plus. Everyone one else at the counter is just there to help me get an item out of the case. Small talk while I look it over. I usually just thank them, go do a little more research to be sure of what I like, and then return when one of the 3 I like are there. In there defense, most of the counter crew are hunters I think and they know a bit about some shotguns and / or hunting rifles. A lot of the rest is out of their expertise and area of interest. Just like if I worked the counter, I could help the fellow with questions on pistols & ammo easily, revolvers so - so. But if they ask me what choke to put in their shotgun??? Well I could joke and ask them if it's a 2 barrel or a quadra-jet. ;-)

I go to Walmart and I say I want that box of Federal, 3rd shelf down, 4 over ... no-no, from the right side, the red box, (they point to it), yea that one, 2 boxes of those please.:D

That may not be a far fetched as one might assume.
As a child of the 50s, I recall one my classmates doing a morning report (the old school version of show-n-tell): He reported that his dad, on the LAPD, had a new magnum revolver. His dad had told him, he had the new mag gun so he could shoot the engines of cars trying to escape the law. Do any of you gray beards recall, did Remington have an ad campaign where they claimed their mag ammo would blow out an engine block?

Have you ever been somewhere that was SUPPOSED to have people that had at least some knowledge of what they were talking about behind the counter but it turned out you doubted they ever even shot a gun? Just curious.

Every time I’m on the internet.

Wheelgunner,

I'd like to know where you live. Either you live somewhere with very knowledgeable folks or you have somehow gotten very lucky. I'm with peetzakilla on this one. It's more the norm, IMHO, that most "experts" or folks paid to know just don't...regardless of its HomeDepot or you local master gardener at the county extension office. In fact I have a saying that I made up years and years ago on the topic. Here it is:

"Most people don't know <nothin'> about nothin' even though its their job to know."

It is VERY frustrating. I usually seek the opinion of at least three "experts" and verify it through research.

My father once told me a story from when he was working at a sporting goods store during college.

Customer: Looking to buy a shotgun, what would you recommend?
Dad: What are you planning to do with it?
Customer: (No idea)

Dad suggests one, customer likes it, dad breaks the action open and the customer says....

What the hell you do that for?! I ain't buyin' it now!

Gosh we must be ruining shotguns by the truckload.

Oh I believe your every word, you see I was there too. Youngest driver of the stealth attack all-terrain submarines in the special branch of the special service arm of special black ops. Started out as the wing gunner shooting .52 cal machine gun (twice as good as the 50 cal!!). Had to be careful to not make too big of a hole in the screen door or the fishes would get in when we made tactical retreats...

you must have been there with my granpa... he was the belly sniper on a b52... he defended the alamo from mr freeze in 1783 before it got moved to san antonio....

Walmart in Illinois.....

The only employee that is allowed to sell ammunition for the store must have an Illinois Firearm Owners Identification Card issued by the state.

This explains the rather long wait at the sporting goods counter for a representative to actually sell you ammo. One clerk told me he was the only one that worked at the store (period) that had an FOID card.

I asked if he shot alot and he replied he had never fired a gun before.
I asked why he had a card.

He said he'd do anything not to have to work in the tire center.....:D

A friend of mine, ( a pistol shooter who shot for the NG International Pistol team) was in a large box store's sporting goods department when a guy wanted to return a 38 pistol because it wouldnt shoot 38s. The clerk took a box of 38s, and sure enough they wouldn't even go in the clips. Yeap, it say right on the gun 38 Special. So the clerk took the gun, gave the guy a refund.

My buddy looked at the gun, told the clerk he would buy it for $150, saying he knew a gun smith that might be able to fix it. The clerk checked with the manager and sold my buddy a brand new Smith Model 52 wad cutter gun for $150.

We (the AK NG Marksmanship Unit had tons of WW 38 WC match ammo that worked in the gun perfectly.

What do ya know... I learned something tonight! I've never heard of this pistol before, and looked it up afterwards. Thanks!

I spend my money at two excellent gun stores in my area, both staffed by folks whose opinions are well-informed and appreciated by me ... if you're being helped by somebody who apparently got his or her gun info from a cereal box or the Brady Bunch, shop elsewhere ...

overall the guys at the shop i frequent are top notch fellas. One day though, one of the guys that i have never talked to was the only one free. I asked him (and I cant remember what company i asked about) but if he could look up how much an ar-15 stripped upper and lower would be. His response.."whaddaya mean stripped? they don't sell 'em like that"

ok...thanks.

45 ACP

WallyWorld sells WWB 45 ACP-the box says "45 Auto" IIRC,so the clerk was actually correct insofar as what she's seen on the shelves.

zippy13: blume357,
What more do you think he should have done -- let someone else get them, and go home without the ammo but with a clean conscious?
Yes.

I once bought ten tropical fish from Wal-Mart. They were $4.97 each. The cashier charged me $4.97 for all ten. I informed him the actual price was $49.70.
A customer standing beside me was astounded, saying, "You're an honest guy!"

Maybe. But God knows everything you do. He knows every leaf which falls.

If we - everyone in this country - turn our backs on decency and morality, if we no longer fear God - we will fall. And we will deserve it.

perhaps that was serendipity rewarding you for previous honorable acts? you just blew away serendipities 90% discount.

just sayin...

God should be more worried about innocent, good people being raped, murdered, tortured, etc. then falling of leaves and your tropical fish:rolleyes:

Anyways back on topic to prevent closing of a great thread (he can share his god opinion as can i, right?).

Clerk did nothing wrong, but while at a local GS, a guy says he has something he is looking to sell, and its "good," but doesnt know if he should bring it in the store. The clerk, the guy, and I who had weaseled my way into the conversation and made introduction, went out to see what he wanted to get rid of. Full Auto (he claimed) AK for 4 grand, that hes had for "forever." Maybe not a big deal to some, but we're in cali-fricken-fornia. He left unsold.
