Anyone else ever noticed this?

I bought a .45 during the ammo drought. I stopped off at the local wal mart to try and score a box. The lady that works behind the counter has been there for a good long time. I've bought a couple of pocket knives from her, and she seems friendly enough.

"Can I help you with something?"
"Yeah, do you have any .45 ACP?"
"Oh no. I almost never get that in. I haven't seen that in a LONG time."
"Oh, really? Ammo shortage that bad?"
"Yeah, but we haven't got any of that in in over 6 months."
"...."
"We get .45 auto in about once a week, though. But we sell out of that before it's been on the shelf for an hour."
"But.. OK, well I'll be sure to check back."

Near as I can figure it, she thought I was talking about .45GAP:confused:

I remember selling one in the mid 90's out of a store I work in for over 500.

Went into a major gun/camping/clothing store starts with a G.
They had a sale on Rem green box ammo. Went in on a Sunday morning and bought everything they had in 9mm and 45 ACP. We are talking 10 to 12 cases.
The “xpert” behind the counter asked what machine gun I had. My wife said “All of them!” the look that went over his face told us he believed us. I don’t.
Same store, month ago, I was looking for some 44 bullets for a reloading experiment I am doing. Asked the Xpert where there bullets were (big store) “What for? He asked.
I don’t normally take well to stupid questions like that from a sales clerk but I said. “I’m loading a 44 mag rifle.”
The next words out of his mouth were “You can’t reload for a 44 magnum rifle, you’ll blow it up, rifle 44 magnums are only made to shoot factory ammo.”
I was dumbfounded and was at a loss for words, he must have not liked that I didn’t agree with him and he said “You do know that don’t you?”
I looked at him in the eyes and said “Are you really that stupid or just trying to sell factory ammo?” and I turned around and walked out and ordered the bullets from Midway.

The other guy told him he thought the .380 was just a shortened 9mm to which the older gent scoffed at him for being uninformed and told him very patiently that the .380 has some of he most vicious recoil in a handgun.

This guy was doing unguided experiments in origami/aeronautical engineering when he should have been paying attention in physics class, the day they covered Newton .......

Certain proof the world is going to hell in a hand basket!!:D

My buddy looked at the gun, told the clerk he would buy it for $150, saying he knew a gun smith that might be able to fix it. The clerk checked with the manager and sold my buddy a brand new Smith Model 52 wad cutter gun for $150.

Wonderful, so the store ends up taking the loss. Excuse me, but that seems just plain dishonest to me...

Do You Really!

Times have changed, from the days of qualified folks working in retail stores. America is now the land of $9.00 an hour folks just trying to make a living.

Do you really expect that when you go to Home Depot to order a new window or door that the kid behind the counter has ever installed what you are buying or for that manner has ever owned a home?

Do you really expect that when you hurry into Wallgreens, with no time to wait for the pharmacist, and need something to fix that cut that you let fester for a couple of days, that the 19 year old looking at you will be able to coach you in the do's and don't of using Hydrogen Peroxide.

Why would you allow yourself to be directed to a gun purchase by one who may not even have shot a gun? Question everything folks, the counter person is there to get YOU the product that YOU want. Do your research, know what you want, he's just there to write it up for you. If you want to talk guns, find a range and hang out there, STORES are for selling, not information.

Bob, my friend, that's good advice; but, how am I gonna get a new S&W Mod 52 for $150 hanging out at the range? Those folks know what one's worth.

:D You got me there my friend!

Just finished up my 3 days as a volunteer for our annual sight in days. One of my my covey of hunters bought a package deal at one of our local big box sports stores. He got a very nice 700 BDL in 30-06, a Nikon scope, rifle case and a free box of ammo. PROBLEM= 7mm Remington Mag rounds do not work well in an '06. Thankfully we had some 30-06 available, as my ancestors coined, BUYER BEWARE!

My best to you and yours, Bob

Jaycee-honestly i dont see the problem, the manager okayed the deal and if they are too stupid to know what they are selling that is their fault.

but that seems just plain dishonest to me...

You’re saying he stole the gun?
That would be dishonest.
He made an offer they accepted, that is an honest deal.
Stupid is as stupid does.

How do you know the store took a loss? Yes, this is under priced and I question the story. As I often say, no one put a gun to your head and made you do the deal! A store is only as good as it's ability to meet it's margins.

So you're saying you don't believe my story about being a Coast Guard sniper fighting the Nazi's in the Gulf of 'Nam?

Oh I believe your every word, you see I was there too. Youngest driver of the stealth attack all-terrain submarines in the special branch of the special service arm of special black ops. Started out as the wing gunner shooting .52 cal machine gun (twice as good as the 50 cal!!). Had to be careful to not make too big of a hole in the screen door or the fishes would get in when we made tactical retreats...

Working at a gun store I can tell you probably 1 in 5 customers actually know something about guns. Generally the other 4 out of 5 we laugh at when they walk out. I had a "Vietnam Vet" yelling at me why we don't recommend shooting 5.56's in a .223 chambered bolt action.

Or the Desert Eagle is a great bear hunting gun in PA...
Or if I have any MP5's chambered in .45acp.... were not a class 3 dealer...
Or if (said gun) is the same one in Call of Duty (always my favorite)
Or the guy who filled a model 94 with spire points, wondering why it jammed and we looked at him like he was holding a bomb (he pretty much was..)

Whats even better are the questions you get asked on the phone... sometimes I have to put them on hold and start laughing...

Honestly I loved our 2nd Amendment until I actually started selling guns all day everyday... sometimes your just hoping for the person to get denied.... because chances are they are going to hurt themselves or others.

The gun club I shoot at has both indoor and outdoor ranges, neither air conditioned. This past summer, the dude working the counter got a call asking about available ranges for shooting that day, and he told them he had indoor and outdoor ranges available for $10.00 per hour for non members. It was a real hot and humid day, and the caller asked if the outdoor ranges were air conditioned.

I have/had more of a problem with the story about the

45acps marked at 4.75 a box at Wally world and buying several cases than the smith and wesson going to 150...

I despise wall-mart... but still would have a problem with and obvious error like that.

blume357,
He asked the clerk if the price was correct, and the price was confirmed. I've never had a store clerk ask me, "Do you really want to pay that much?" for a non-sale item. What more do you think he should have done -- let someone else get them, and go home without the ammo but with a clean conscious?

After dove season, the local K-mart was selling off their promotional 20-ga field ammo at a ridiculously low price. Next to the huge stack of dove loads were two sealed flats of AA Skeet loads (premium price ammo for you non-shotgunners) with the same price on them. I asked if they were sure about the price, they checked their computer and said the tag was correct. I left with all the AAs and a clean conscious. Wouldn't you?
