Anyone else dislike S&W semi-auto pistols?

What Ruger did was wrong. I won't apologize for it and I don't buy Ruger firearms. In terms of moral relativity S&W went light years beyond Ruger's drafting of model leislation to limit mag capacity. There's no comparison.

Each person has their favorites, but in my experience S&W makes good pistols not great pistols. I've got first hand experience with 6906 and 5906 pistols. Both began to quickly show gray blotches on the aluminum frame after exposure to sweat. The 6906 had a blued hammer that would quickly corrode without intense care. The DA pulls on both was long with a lot of slack. The SA pulls were decent. The 6906 evidenced machining marks on the front of the frame, close to the rails. They fed reliably, but it was too easy to prevent the trigger from resetting during rapid fire. Lastly the factory Lexan grips were sharp and looked cheaply made.

To me there's no way that they were ever worth the $600 that they sold for when higher quality pistols could be had for less. Like I said that's my opinion and I don't see why others should share it.

Fud,

With true respect, I offer the following observations:
1) The best handgun I own is one of two S&W 627 Special Editions. If -- shudder, shudder -- I was compelled to have only one sidearm, it would be one of these Smith revolvers.
2) I have stated this in previous TFL posts, and I reiterate now, to demonstrate my belief that Smith has made superior products.
3) Within my experience, I cannot honestly evaluate S&W autoloaders to have the same design and manufacturing quality, the same reliability and durability, or the same out-of-the box accuracy as other top-tier brands (Sig, Kimber, SA, Glock, old Colts, Ruger, H&K, etc.). I agree their more current designs are superior to the Sigma series; however, it is my belief that S&W has a way to go before it equals H&K, Sig, Glock, Kimber, and so forth.
4) Please note that I have kept S&W's politics removed from this analysis, although I believe they were essentially treasonous to all firearms constituencies, especially to their long-term, faithful customers.

Best regards.

:D :D I wondered how long it would be before someone took the bait. Thanks FUD and Ben. Figured that by just asking no one would bother. :)

Again, as to their autos, I don't like them. Politics aside. :)

I own a S&W 669. I bought it used and it already had a great deal of wear on the finish. Other than being cosmetically lacking I can't complain about it.

Has fed everything I've shot through it. It fits my hand naturally. Points well. All in all it's an OK gun.

I recently purchased a SIGPro in .357SIG. I love the trigger action on it. S&W was also in the running when I was looking at new guns. To me there was no comparision. While the S&W seemed to have good quality, the trigger wasn't nearly as sweet and smooth as the SIG. Additionally the price was a few hundred more than the SIG.

Peace..
Keith

I'm surprised that no one else has mentioned the magazine disconnector ("safety") of the non-Sigma S&W autos. I HATE that! That, the slide-mounted safety levers, and the high prices have kept me from buying one of the four digit series (5906, 4546, etc.) S&W autos. I've come close to getting a police surplus 1006 just because it's one of the few 10mm pistols, but I've never done it.

I do like my [pre-sellout, bought used] Sigma .380 pistol. I also like my [pre-sellout, bought used] M-41, even though it has the cursed mag "safety" and could use a few improvements to become a more competitive target pistol.

Regarding the political situation: IMHO, the best case scenario would be for Tompkins to sell S&W to new owners who would move the company out of MA, tear up the "agreement" and tell the government lawyers to go do something anatomically impossible. ;) The worst case scenario would be for S&W to wither and die, depriving American shooters of what was once a great institution.

I have a 3913 and a 4566. I am very happy with both. With Hogue grips, they fit my hand perfectly. Trigger pulls are great, functioning and accuracy are great too. I qualified for my carry permit with the 3913. I would recommend either model; however, I did have a friend whose 4516 gave him a fit. Maybe I just got lucky twice.
