Another little windfall came my way,,,

I vote for something akin to a Ruger Fluted Hunter or Government Model Mark II with long 7 inch barrels or the browning buckmark hunter if you can find a pair with checkered walnut target grips. Maybe a pair of 9" single sixes would suit your needs as well but it doesn't make for fast action duling. A couple of smith and wesson 41s would break the bank but... damn that would be a sweet set. Then don't forget the colt woodsman target series or a couple of classic slant grip high standards......

the Bee's Knees?,,,

Hello Webleymkv,,,

That's a phrase I haven't heard in a while,,,
One of the classics that deserves a reintroduction. :)

Yes, a pair of those would be a sweet set,,,
Especially if one used an antique law book as a case.

I have a friend who has a pair of derringers mounted in an old bible,,,
He said he got the idea from an old Dean Martin/Robert Mitchum movie.

I am going to try that with one of my rimfire/centerfire pairs,,,
The difference in how I will try it is that I will remove the pages completely.

Then I'll make a box to fit the spine and hardcovers,,,
Cut out the shapes in 1/2" wood and line it with foam and red velvet,,,
Then I'll take a wire brush to the outside edges of the box to simulate paper edges.

But I wanted this pair to be completely practical as well as pretty,,,
That's why I made the decision to order the these Ruger 22/45's.

When I take a newbie to the range,,,
I want us to be shooting the exact same platform,,,
And I wanted that platform to be one with good shooting characteristics.

In my not-so humble opinion,,,
A 6" barrel is the absolute longest for practical training,,,
My ideal would have been a 5 inch barrel but 5.5 inches is close enough.

And I do love the looks of the slab-side barrels,,,
I already own one of the 4.5" barrel slab-side-22/45's,,,
It's the one with fixed sights and no option for mounting a scope rail.

That little gun is my first choice when I go to the range to play,,,
Absolute reliability with nothing on it but basic functionality,,,
It's usually the handgun I bring to start newbies out on,,,
I shoot my Beretta NEOS while they Ruger away.

But that particular handgun is going away,,,
One of the young men who works at my watering hole,,,
Is going to receive that little handgun as a graduation present.

I've taken him shooting several times,,,
He always stays with that Ruger and hits well with it,,,
For it I bought a nice little gun-rug, new glasses, & new ear plugs,,,
I also bought for him a small cleaning kit, a small mallet, a dowel, & a paper clip. ;)

All the things a Ruger owner needs,,,
Assembled neatly in a Tupperware box with a handle.

So after giving away my beloved little slab-side pistol,,,
It only makes sense to replace it with an upgraded matching pair.

Wouldn't you agree? :D

I can't believe no one mentioned the obvious...

I've searched and as far as I can find,,,
The only other .22 LR single-shot made now,,,
Is that Rossi 2-barrel set I linked to in a previous post.

If you know of another,,,
Please let me know about it.

Aarond

T/C Contender! With .22LR barrel.

Still in production (the G2, anyway) single shot, close to the classic dueling pistols in general shape, excellent in action and accuracy. A bit more expensive than a pair of cheap autoloaders, but a pair of Contender frames and barrels, cased together.....mmmmmmm

Added plus is that with extra barrels you can shoot centerfires from mild to wild.

Not as much fun for playing action type shooting games as a repeater, but for testing your shooting skill, in the classic offhand, single shot fashion, what would be better, save a custom made dueling set?

Aarond, I see you seem to have settled on a pair of autos, enjoy.

Still think matching Contenders would be cool.;)

Hello 44 AMP,,,

Aarond, I see you seem to have settled on a pair of autos, enjoy.
Still think matching Contenders would be cool.

When I last priced the Contender pistol,,,
It was way above of the price range I would want to pay,,,
But you are correct in saying a cased pair of them would be very cool indeed.

I went with the Ruger semi-auto's for practicality,,,
They will be the pistols I take when introducing newbies to shooting.

Also because I know the reliability/quality is top rate,,,
And I think they are beautiful handguns. :D

Alas,,,
So many guns,,,
So little money for them.

Aarond

I did mention it! Or at least, I mentioned the Encore version of the same. I guess it got lost in the shuffle.

Hey... maybe we can one-up the Evil Pawn Shop and convince him he needs to buy another pair of 22s for ... uh... well I'm sure there's a reason. There's always a reason. :-)

There is also a Cricket 22 single-shot, but it's bolt-action. I'm not sure that's the image he was shooting for. It certainly would be hard to use in a Shadow costume! ;-)

Hello Daekar,,,

Actually, I did look at the bolt-action Cricket pistols,,,
But I did not like the "fitted grip" stocks at all,,,
They are either right or left hand exclusive.

Even though this time I decided to treat myself to a pair of shiny semi's,,,
I still have a desire for a pair of single-shot 22 handguns.
They will probably be the Rossi 2-barrel pistols,,,
Mainly because of their affordable price.

The desire for a pair of single-shots is really a nostalgia thing for me,,,
When I was a very little kid I used to spend weekends with my great uncle Bantie,,,
One of the highlights of the visit was that we always went out back to shoot his pair of single-shot pistols.

We would take two boxes of 22 short and a six pack of beer,,,
There we would sit on this log while he drank a beer,,,
Then I got to shoot the beer can until it was dead,,,
He would be busy making me another target. ;)

Puh-lease, no lectures about mixing beer and guns,,,
It was a different age way back then.
Very fond memories for me.

Hello again Webleymkv,,,

Those are pretty slick,,,
And not badly priced for the pair either.

Hobby Lobby has those kind of books in their store,,,
Several different designs in many different sizes,,,
But the ones you linked to are a lot cheaper.

I also saw that hideaway clock,,,
My Pop builds furniture, lamps, & clocks out of driftwood,,,
I'm going to send him a picture of that clock so he can make some like it.

He does a version of that type of mantlepiece clock anyways,,,
Adding a door to the back should be very easy for him.

Thanks for the lead my friend.

Hello Stevie-Ray,,,

I cannot help but say, well done sir!

Well, it's not like I designed them or anything,,,
I just whupped out an empty credit card. :o

But I do take some self satisfaction in finally not cheaping out,,,
So often in my past I've wanted to buy Thing-A very badly,,,
But ended up buying Thing-B 'cause it was cheaper,,,
And then never being really happy at all.

The initial $600.00 windfall from the holster job was just a limiter,,,
I almost purchased a pair of these pistols because of price,,,
But I finally conquered my Go-Cheap Gene,,,
And got what I truly wanted instead.

I know it sounds silly,,,
But it was a real feat to overcome that tendency.

Now, if Buds would only ship the dang things!

The last 3 times I ordered from Buds on a Sunday evening,,,
They were shipped by Tuesday at the latest,,,
I'm getting very antsy here,,,
I want 'em yesterday! :D

Evil Gun Shop

Aarond: Went by the "Evil Gun Shop" today after a Dr's appointment. They almost trapped me into buying a nice little .32 S&W Lemonsqeezer, but I held out. Maybe after Christmas, if I dont find something else before then. Wish they would get in a Wolverine, so I could handle it and see how it feels in the hand.

Hello vostracker,,,

I've seen that little beauty sitting under the glass,,,
You should adopt it and give it a good home.

I've been hounding David for months to order in a Wolverine,,,
He keeps saying he will so it'll happen someday,,,
It'll happen someday I'm sure.

I went in just to browse on my lunch hour on Tuesday,,,
I wonder how many times we've been in the store at the same time?

Rugers

So Aarond: How are those Ruger's? I was thinking since they're the same, maybe you could name them, "Thelma and Louise".

I dont like the Mark III Rugers!

I'd suggest finding 2 used Ruger Mark II's and then your done. I dont like most of the new semi auto .22's except for the Browning Buckmark. And I dont like the Mark III because of it's loaded chamber indicator. I've heard of it breaking and just think it's unnecessary. But I love the Mark II's and there are still a ton of them out there for sale used. I see them all the time.

Hey Vostracker,,,

Hello Vostracker:

I had Thelma & Louise on my consideration list,,,
But then a friend E-mailed me another set,,,
Veritas and Aequitas.

Veritas is the Roman goddess of Truth,,,
Aequitas is the Roman goddess of Justice.

I'm still on the fence for these two.

Hello mellow_c:

I have a blue 4.5" slab-side 22/45 Mk-III,,,
I've shot the heck out of that gun with no problems at all.

I really don't mind the loaded chamber indicator,,,
And I wanted new guns so I ordered the Mk-III models.
