Another little windfall came my way,,,

A gentleman called me yesterday evening,,,
I agreed to make a fancy 2-gun cowboy rig for his wife.

So now I am thinking about a Modern set of Dueling Pistols chambered in .22 LR,,,
Something that when someone says, "Hey Aarond, take me shooting.",,,
I just grab this box and out the door we go to the range,,,
So we both are shooting the exact same guns.

I would like something classy,,,
Something that will look good in a nice case,,,
While they don't need to be match quality I want reasonable accuracy

I'm considering a set of Beretta NEOS,,,
Maybe a pair of S&W 22A's with the 5.5" barrel,,,
A pair of these Ruger 22/45's would also be sweet,,,
Or maybe even a pair of the new Olympic Arms Wolverines.

They could be revolvers as long as they are DA/SA,,,
I just don't know of any that would be in my price range

Nothing made out of Zinc alloy,,,
Nothing out of production,,,
Not over $600 for both.

What do you think gentlemen?,,,
Any other suggestions?

Aarond

Any of those sound fine. Buy the set that you shoot best, don't want to be out dueled with your on guns. ;)

Here. the Walthers.

Or chip in the $40 and get a pair of these sweet looking .22's

Hands down the coolest looking modern .22's out there

The ones you listed are FUGLY in comparison.

Good Idea

Sounds like a good idea. Just remember your shooting partner can always say"Your gun is working better than mine". My shooting partner always blames it on his blood sugar being low.

Budda,
I think those Walthers are fugly, but that is only my opinion. They probably are sweet shooters, though. To each his own. I prefer revolvers, myself.

Shoot often and shoot a lot.

I had one of the Walthers with the longer barrel, only gun I was happy to let go, problems from day one.

My picks would be the 22a or the 22/45.

About he SP-22,,,

I have a friend who purchased one of the SP-22 Walthers,,,
He and I could never get the thing to run consistently.

Fail to feed problems with everything from CCI MiniMags to El Cheapo bulk,,,
Nothing would run a full mag without at least one jam,,,
That was with both of his two magazines.

He sent it back for warranty work,,,
But when returned it had the same problem.

It possible he got a rare turkey,,,
But that shied me away from them.

The little P-22's have Zinc alloy in their construction,,,
That's a deal breaker for me at the git-go.

Has anyone had any hands-on experience with the Wolverine?,,,
I'm dying to get one in my hands for a little bit if shooting.

Hello KMAX,,,

Sounds like a good idea. Just remember your shooting partner can always say"Your gun is working better than mine". My shooting partner always blames it on his blood sugar being low.

I hafta remember the Blood Sugar alibi,,,
Put that one in my file for later use. :D

When I was a kid my Dad bought me a big book on old handguns,,,
In the book it said that real dueling pistols were often sighted way off on purpose.

The one person would not know they were off so he would miss,,,
The owner of the set would know how to compensate and hit the other duelist.

I know I read it in the book,,,
I don't know if the story is factual or not.

Myself, I would never do that to an opponent.

Just wondering. How is zinc alloy a deal breaker? I have never shot the walther .22's I just thought they looked cool.

They probably are sweet shooters, though.

You would like to think so but not really. My buddy has one and we were shooting steel with his walther p22 and my ruger 22/45, the 22/45 can run circles around the walther. Accuracy was very inconsistent and it had a few jams with bulk CCI ammo. Also dont let anyone discourage you from getting the ruger based on how hard it is to clean and field strip. It really isn't that hard, it may be a pain in the behind but its pretty damn simple, people just like to complain.

Just wondering. How is zinc alloy a deal breaker?

It is cheap pot metal. The slide is made from zinc alloy and from what I hear because of it the walther has a limited round count before you will start seeing problems. For the same price the ruger will last you a lifetime.

^^^^thanks^^^^

My father in law bought a NIB MK III ruger with a red dot scope and it jammed with ANY ammo, mini mags even. It was a nice looking gun...but he sold it after 3 months.

When I think of dueling pistols, the last thing that comes to mind is the plastic futuristic guns like the p22 or neos. I would say a set of 22 revolvers in stainless steel - ruger, sw, taurus, but that will probably cost more than $600. You could also opt for 2 bersa thunders in 22 with a nickel finish. That set would look very classy in a nice custom wooden box lined with velvet.

Hmmm... maybe I need to think about this a little more for a while. I could get my wife and myself a set for Christmas this year. :-)

Hello Budda,,,

In my (not so) humble opinion,,,
Zinc alloy is a weak (weaker) metal,,,
It's only use in a firearm is to lower the manufacturing cost.

I simply don't want to spend my money on that kind of cost cutting,,,
The Walther P-22 has a zinc alloy slide that is reported to wear rather quickly,,,
Maybe I'm just buying in to the internet hype but I'd rather have an aluminum alloy or steel gun.

Now having made that statement I need to admit to owning one zinc alloy gun,,,
I recently bought a Hi-Point 9mm carbine with a zinc alloy slide,,,
My alibi for that is it was simply a range toy purchase,,,
Another windfall of cash I spent a bit frivolously.

I'm not saying they are guns to avoid,,,
I just avoid them myself.

Hello tet4,,,

I'm happy to have put the idea in your head my friend.

I own a Bersa Thunder-22 and love the little gun,,,
But I already have it paired up with a Bersa Thunder 380,,,
They (Lynn and Vanessa) live in a fake book I purchased at Hobby Lobby.

My experience with the Bersa is very positive,,,
And I have run a lot of ammo through the thing this year.

If you did decide to get a matching pair for you and your lady,,,
You could do a lot worse than that little Argentinian sweetie,,,
But I think for a dueling pair I want a slightly longer barrel.

I have a brace of:

- Ruger Mark II .22/45's

- High Standard Sport Kings, 4" barrel nickle finish

- Smith and Wesson model 17 revolvers

I don't know if it will affect your decision in any way - but - the individual guns have their own unique personalities.
The look the same on the outside and the inside, feel the same when you pick them up - but - they shoot differently.

I believe "real" dueling pistols would have been hand crafted so they both fired exactly the same.

Anyhow - yeah - it's kind of neat to have a matched set.

Edit to add - I didn't plan on getting a set of any of the three above. That's just how things worked out.
I retired my first .22/45 after 150,000 rounds and picked up another just like it. The first one still has plenty of life left in it tough.

The High Standards - one is mine, and the other belnged to my late father in law. I bought mine and was showing it to him, and he fell in love with it and went to the same store and bought one just like it. It came down to my wife and I when he passed away.

The Smith 17's I did buy as a pair. I looked forever for a 17. Finally. not one, but two popped up at the local gun store. We haggled price for a bit, then I dropped the "if I buy both, how much?" line on them. They made me a deal I couldn't pass up.

You know, it's almost criminal for people to post pictures like that, especially around Christmas time. :-) But, I do think your Bersas need two sets of rosewood grips.

The ruger 22/45 hunter in SS would be my next choice, but that will blow your budget. About the only other thing that I could see making your budget is the 4" taurus 22 revolvers (I think at around $300) in ss or nickel. I'd rather have the rugers though.

If you are into single action 22 revolvers, you can pick up two for like $300 total, not a bad deal if it's just for fun at the range.

Go space age!!

Hi Aarond,

I say go Wolverines. That way you get the coolness of the space gun look that you were wanting too. Only problem my be finding reviews on them.

Gun broker

These might interest you. I just saw these on Gunbroker.com. They are a pair of Stevens No35 Tip Up single shot Gallery Pistols in .22cal.. They definetly have the dueling look.
