Ammo WAY too loud, what happened?

I have had to put down several deer hit by vehicles and I remember clearly that I was surprised at how loud the report was. (with no ear protection) This was with a .44 Spl 3 in. revolver. I have no idea why it seemed so loud on these occasions. Normally I always use ear protection.

One other possibilty is that the round you shot had some set back causing a much higher pressure than normal.

I do agree with everyone else if you know you about to fire a gun get some hearing protection and use it.

Ringing in the ears is a bad thing

 Well you guessed it here. I've had too much shooting and not enough hearing protection in my past.

Go to any VA hospital on any given day and go to the OTO clinic. Ask them how many vets come in complaining of deafness or ringing in the ears.
They will answer 100%.
I have 80%+ hearing loss in my right ear from standing next to a tank when it went boom back in the 1970's. I didn't have hearing protection available to me at the time and my right ear has never stopped ringing since that moment.
My left ear is at 65% loss and rings non-stop as well.
I have ringing in both of my ears. My Right ear rings in 2 completely differen tones and my left rings in a 3rd tone.
There are people that have committed suicide just to stop the non-stop ringing. It can drive you crazy for sure.
If you have any ringing in your ears it is proof of damage to your ears, and it is non-reversable!

I never range shoot anymore without 2 levels of hearing protection. I wear ear plugs and a full headset. I'm not going to lose any more of my hearing over the thought of not looking cool when I'm shooting. I even wear earplugs when hunting. Sure, I may not hear every animal that goes near me but I'm willing to miss one or 2 just to keep my hearing. I hunt by sight anyway.

A person that shoots without hearing protection seems to me to be pretty vain (It doesn't look cool, OR I'm Superman and I'm doing this my way) or uninterested in hearing the finer things in life, like children playing, the wind on a dry summer day or thunder at a distance.
Deafness sucks, don't subject yourself to it if at all possible.

That's my 2C's worth.

I haven't been able to use the telephone on my right ear since that fateful day quail hunting where my head was nearly blown off by the overzealous shooter that was on my right. His twelve guage went off about a foot from my right ear.

I can hear what is being said, I just can't tell who it is. Maddening!

.ps 357 sigs are godawful loud! But I think the OP was saying this round was abnormally so? Definately get the gun checked. Were you shooting factory rounds or reloads?

and another aside to this, tinnitus can be caused by blood pressure I believe. My ex-father in law had a quad-bypass surgery and the first thing he noticed when he woke up was that the ringing was gone. The doctor said it was normal.

Not trying to scare anyone here, but if you suffer from tinnitus you might wanna get that ticker checked.
