I was at the gun show a few days ago and ran into a guy charging $60 a box for a 50 round box of off brand FMJ .380 ammo. I was shocked when he told me the prices especially since even higher priced stores around here are only selling it for $30-35 + you can still get it on the net if you look around.
So the real question is; is it crazy that this person/vendor would sell 380 ammo for $60 a box; or that some idiot would actually pay that much for it. I vote that there are idiots who will pay it. In a traditional capitalistic world, the vendor is free to ask whatever they want for something and the consumer is free to either say OK, or; "Go eff yourself".
Telling a vendor; whether at a gun show or at the local gun shop to go "Eff" themselves is what people need to do. And then tell them that you don't even want to look at what else they are selling. Consumers have the power. Unfortunately, there are the idiots who will pay the $60. They can't justify paying it other than they are idiots. And of course, then some politician tries to get on the bandwagon and pretend they are helping by trying to get some regulations passed. Just like they are doing with credit card companies, mortgage companies, and other financial institutions. We don't need the government for the vast majority of economic issues. We as the consumer have the power. But I can't blame a vendor if an idiot wants to pay $60 for a box of ammo. They should be allowed to sell it for that.
The last gun show I was at, they had 2 vendors who had 32acp ammo and I was interested in it. He wanted $39 a box. I told him; somewhat politely; that there was no way in hell I would pay that. I told him that I knew for a fact that he DIDN'T pay that much for it; that the manufacturers AREN'T charging that much for it; (If they were, Walmart would be selling it for a lot higher); that he was charging that much because it was high demand and low supply. I told him I would be back at his table at 5:00 before the show ended. If he could sell it at $39 a box, then more power to him. But if he couldn't sell it all, I would happily give him $25 a box for it. I agreed that normal price is around $15-$18 and that I'd be willing to pay a little more for convenience. He obviously said NO WAY. I went back to his table at right before 5:00 and bought 4 boxes for $25 each.
If you NEED TO BUY the ammunition more than the vendor NEEDS TO SELL it, then you deserve to pay $60 a box. There isn't one person who NEEDS more than 1 box per gun of self defense rounds. Yes, you may WANT more. And you might not get to go out and plink like you want to; but that's a lot different than NEEDING ammo. A gun is useless without ammo, but you don't NEED to shoot paper targets. But for defensive purposes, you only NEED about a box. If the consumer would understand and take this position, then the availability would go back to normal and the prices would go back down. From what I've seen, it's the retailers and retail distributors who are jacking the prices. If it was the manufacturers, then I wouldn't have been able to buy 380 at walmart a few days ago for $15 a box or 45acp value packs of 100 rounds for $30. (Basically $15 a box). Walmart's prices would have had to go up also if it was Winchester, Federal, Remington, etc... who were raising the prices.
