Ammo run to Wal Mart

I’ve always wondered why WalMart’s prices are so different state to state, or even town to town can make a big difference.

All Wal-Marts compete with one another. No single store will match the price of any other single store, nor will they match their online store.

They compete on a company wide level, in an attempt to better compete at a national level.

bought some Fiocchi .380 95 gr. FMJ for $12 per 50 count.

I just patted myself on the back for buying 600 rds of the same shipped to my door for under $200!

Walmart tracks every single purchase in real time from their corporate headquarters. They are intimately familiar with what they paid for each bit of merchandise, and they constantly adjust pricing (within certain parameters) to maximize their profit while maintaining their high rate of sell-through.

It's not uncommon (as many here have observed) to see significantly different prices at two Walmarts in the same town. Across state lines, where regulations, taxes, and other factors are also variables, those differences can be even more pronounced.

Dodge.... $.11 per shot?

Missouri Bullet Co. just now, lists it's cheapest 9mm for $104 per 2000; that's 5.2 cents per bullet BEFORE SHIPPING. Our primers here in KY were $33 per thousand if you could get them locally...shipping is extra not to mention the hazmat charges. Powder ... $20 per lb. from Keislers across the river, that's 1.4 cents per shot if you can avoid the shipping and hazmat charges again. So far that's 9.9 cents per shot here in the mid-west...and it's for lead based bullets, not the FMJ or JHP's probably loaded in that $10 box of 9mm's.

That's a saving of about a dime a shot, if your piece can digest lead bullets, and certainly not money to sneeze at for sure... If you can avoid the shipping and hazmat charges, and count no cost for your press, dies, scale, measure, calipers, length guages, trimming tools, etc, etc, etc...and have the time & space, and patience, it's economical to load them yourself. But if you're just starting out, and can't afford the $300-$500 to get barely started in reloading, with a minimal equipment outlay, then $10 for a 50 rnd. box of 9mm is a good deal. Wish they were cheaper....

I've loaded my own; rarely bought ammunition since 1962. Some of my guns have never fired a factory round while I've owned them, so I"m not down playing the advantages of loading your own...just pointing out that for some...$10 a box of 50 isn't too bad.

Yep. And I'm using Missouri Bullets, too :)

Bullets worked out to $0.067 each including shipping.

My primers calculated out to $30.80 per 1000, including shipping and hazmat (no tax, since I bought them on-line . . . no gas to go pick 'em up either :D). So $0.0308 per primer.

Powder's a bit under a penny per load, but I bought my powder in bulk too; 12lb for just a hair under $200 which works out to a bit over $15/lb or $0.0095 per round.

The brass was free, since there's tons of it to pick up at the range.

Grand total per round: $0.1073, or a hair under $0.11 per round. That's including hazmat and shipping. And I didn't have to fire up the truck to go anywhere but the range, and I was goin' there anyway :D

So it sounds like 9mm would be significantly cheaper ;)

EDIT: I've reloaded nearly 4K rounds so far, and by my calculations have saved about $650 over the cost of factory ammo. By the time Spring arrives, I will have recouped the cost of my reloading setup (Hornady LnL AP, dies, scale, calipers, manuals, various and sundry doohickeys). And I started reloading less than 3 months ago, on 12/17/2009. If I was shooting 9mm instead of .40S&W, my break even point would probably get pushed out to somewhere around Easter :D

I hate to go to the store. Unfortuneatly, I love to eat sooo... every two wks. its off to the store. Ammo selection and prices used to take me to Walmart along with a long list of other needed items (groceries, clothing etc.). Tried to get everything on the list at one spot. Since the Walmarts around here stopped getting ammo and stopped carrying alot of black powder supplies, there`s no big advantage of stopping there over Meijer. With a major gun store across the street from Meijer and both being closer than Walmart, I don`t get in Walmart anymore.

Went a few days ago and they said the 9mm was just stocked that morning, but when I got there around 9:30am they were completely out.

Did pick up some 12ga slugs that they did not have on my previous 2 or 3 visits, and I did notice that they hat .38 spcl, but I don't own that caliber. I think that was the only handgun caliber they had that day. Again, previous 2 or 3 visits they had NO handgun calibers at all.

Uncle Ben - I think some ammo is still in short supply in some places. But, my store has plenty of Federal and Winchester 22 bulk pack for good prices. They also have a great selection of everything else.

Our Wallyworld ain't got nutt'in!!
NO HANDGUN AMMO OF ANY CALIBER!!!

I drove the extra few miles to Cabella's and they had ammo stacked up in the isles so that you had to walk around it, just like the good old days!!

Wallyworld: die you gravy sucking pig!!!

Wallyworld: die you gravy sucking pig!!!

I like gravy, and I like WallyWorld price's of gravy. So back at you. Besides, I don't have a Cebella's were I live.:barf:

TBS, a good price on target ammo cost more than my SD ammo, and I'm talking about Gold Dot's. Key word, "Gold"!:D

Stopped by the Wally World on the corner of Nicholasville Rd and Man-O-War Blvd in Lexington tonight. Bought 2 boxes of Federal .308 180gr ammo for $13.98 a box and 2 boxes of Win 555 .22lr for $15.98 a box. They had a fair selection of ammo. Now if I could just get bullets and primers......

Wal-Mart vs. Gun Shop

If I'm lucky, a Wal-Mart close to me has WWB 9mm in stock. If it's in stock, it's about $20.00 for the loose pack box of 100 rounds. It's worth checking in and buying a few boxes when they have it.

The biggest and most well stocked gun store in the Charleston SC area (ATP) had the same boxes yesterday for $46.00. I'm pretty sure I know where they get them from.

I wouldn't mind paying a $5.00 a box premium there, but that's a bit rich for my blood.

ATP- Home of the $369.99 Kel Tec P32.

Same with my Wal-Mart. As gross as Wal-Mart is, it's just hard to compete with that price. I've never seen it cheaper. Though I did pick up a box of Speer Lawman's from my local gun shop the other day for 12.99, which seemed pretty reasonable considering they were presumably higher-quality rounds than the WWB.

Ammo isn't a problem at my local Wal-Mart in Highlands Ranch, CO. They have had plenty of 9mm, .22 lr, .357 sig, .40 s&w, occasionally .45 acp. Only round I haven't seen in some time is .38 spcl. Can't beat Federal 9mm 50 count for $9.88 or WWB 50 count for $11.74/WWB 100 count for $20. Across the street at Big 5 Sporting Goods, the cheapest boxes of 50 count FMJ 9mm are $33!!!!!:barf: Luckily those boxes haven't moved for awhile. Even Sports Authority has TONS of ammo, although their WWB 50 count is $14. Go Wally World!

last week went to ww looking for 9 and 38, but the shelves were bare. Picked up WWB 100 rds .45 for $29.95. Was in the Cabela's in Buda two weeks ago, they did have a bunch of ammo, tho not the SD rounds I was looking for. Got two boxes of 9 for a decent price.

I checked my Wal-Mart last night. Shelves were pretty empty. No 9mm, no .38. All I saw was some .357 magnum and some .40S&W, and not much of that.

Update

The good news ... my local Walmart had lots of 9mm.

The bad News ... it was priced at 16.97 for 50. It's a different brand -- couldn't read the label. Bummer!

probably looked a lot like this didn't it?
