The cheapest way to buy ammunition is variable. Sometimes Wal-mart is cheapest, other times it isn't. Georgia Arms is a good provider of good ammo. Ammunition to Go and Natchez are also both consistently good. Dan's Sporting Goods is great to support (particularly when he is running a Sig Forum discount . . . with free shipping). However, I almost always turn to AmmoEngine to assess ammunition prices. Surprisingly, I found Cheaper than Dirt to be the best this go around for a stock-up of .44 mag and .44 special. I didn't like the way CTD jacked up prices a couple of years ago in the post-election period . . . and simply didn't buy from them then. However, now that their prices have come back from the stratosphere, I have no problem with buying from them.
Mind you, if you want specialty ammo (e.g., Buffalo Bore's anti-personnel .44 mag rounds), you need to go directly to the source.
As far as supporting the LGSs with ammo purchases. If they provide honest pricing, they'll get my business (either with guns, ammo, or supplies). Most of them, however, aren't price competitive even after factoring in shipping costs or FFL transfers. Heck, even some of them jack up the price of a gun transfer. I simply choose to give my FFL transfer business to a few who charge $15 for their time.
Shoot safe, shoot often, and spend the bucks! lol!
