About 30 years ago I signed on as an officer in a small town police department (eventually discovered that I really didn't like police work and moved on). Anyway, at a handgun training class I attended, the instructor told a story:
It seems there was a small town cop who had been in uniform for many, many years. For a lot of those years he had been the only officer. Eventually the department added more officers as the town grew, but it was a pretty loosly-run department, and eventually a new mayor was elected who directed that the police department be a little more professional, and one of his first steps was to require all of the officers to qualify with their sidearms.
This instructor from whom I was taking the class happened to be the instructor that was hired to do the qualification.
Anyway, this old veteran cop stepped up to the line to qualify, drew his old S&W revolver, fired his first six rounds, but was unable to continue because the empties couldn't be ejected! Turned out that he loaded the revolver on his first day and never fired it for his whole carrer until that day!
