Am I too sensitive . . . or what?

What's so unsafe about pointing a gun at a video camera?

That's what I was thinking. There are 1000's of "professional" videos and photos of weapons that involve pointing the weapon at the camera. If the camera is "un-manned" what's the problem?

Yes there are lots of idiots and YES you are too sensitive. I suppose you want someone to show you the guns on movies are safe before they point the gun at someone. I can just see it now......Dirty Harry pulls out the blanks and shows them to the camera before pointing the gun at someone just too ease your freaking mind.

As long as I'm not around, people can be as stupid as they want with guns. I don't know em or the people around them. Consider it nature taking it's coarse.

If people learn how to handle a gun from youtube videos than I don't think I would trust them in the first place. I have seen some videos on youtube were the shooter will point the gun at the camera and I didn't see a thing wrong with that; as long as there was no one on the other side. I mean its a video so of course he is going to point the gun towards the camera, I know I would. How else or we going to see all the angles?

And guns in movies? I mean they are movies, they are meant to be entertainment not education.

Now, do people get ideas on how to handle guns from movies and youtube videos? Yes, of course there are people who have watched them and thought they knew what were doing. These are the same kinds of people who think they can learn to drive like a professional stunt man from watching films as well.

Although I do watch out for the youtube "stars" when I go shooting at the range.

Good way to get shot in the U.S..

Well, maybe not shot-but most certainly punched.

Since when is pointing a gun at the camera an unsafe practice?
Don't worry the bullet won't come through the screen and hit you in the forehead. It's physics, they don't work that way.

Probably isn't unsafe but does it really set a good example for young people or the gun illiterate to follow. Some don't stop and think the safety precautions probably taken to ensure things were safe?

As coach used to say "Be professional in and 'outside' the ring. You've got young eyes on you!

Seems as though our society as a whole just isn't worried much about that anymore.

As gun owners, in our society, we represent each other and should conduct ourselves as though we have people(young and old) with 'gun ignorant' eyes on us at all times.

YMMV

Haha, seriously though, if im on duty and someone sweeps his muzzle i ask him to surrender his weapon immediately. I will unload it, bag it and escort him away from the range and inform him that he is banned.

An injury at a shooting range is the last thing we need.

By the way, some people have been slapped...very hard.

this sort of negative reinforcement should be practiced in the US as well. i had a 'tard point a loaded taurus 1911 at me a few months ago, with his finger on the trigger as well.

a good slap would make it stick in there minds not to do stupid crap at the range, or even better not want to return.

obviously this isn't a realistic solution, but i can dream can't i? lol

It would cause an instant fight and I hate to fight.

At the range were I R.O. we simply make them leave if they are that unsafe.

Negative reinforcement taught me that very well at age six. I swung a loaded shotgun across my grandfather. He punched me, and caught the shotgun as I fell.

Worked when I did it to my nephew, also.

Guns are serious business. Anyone handling a gun should be treated, and punished, as an adult, regardless of actual age.

Always thought that hitting someone who has a gun inadvertently pointed at you or other people, especially with their finger on the trigger, is just nominating yourself for a Darwin award.

One of four things will probably happen:

1) They will learn their lesson and it will be a good teaching experience.
2) They won't learn anything and you will probably look like an ass to most people around.
3) If it's a stranger, they see it as you attacking them and shoot you in self defense.....making you look like an ass again. Not to mention dead.
or 4) It startles them and they accidentally squeeze the trigger escalating the situation from muzzle sweeping to a ND/AD, possibly hitting you or someone else. Again making you look like an ass.

Those don't look like good odds of something good coming out of the situation.

My, my . . I didn't know my thread was going to stir up so many comments. :D I wasn't going to post again but then figured I would . . not to defend my comments but to make a couple of statements. To the individual who inferred that I had/have never made a mistake . . nor a youtube video . . . you're wrong on that one. I've made many mistakes in my life . . . and I hopefully have learned from them. As far as making a video . . you're right, I haven't . . but I can assure you that if I did, it would be a lot better than some of the garbage that is out there. As I stated in my original post, I use the videos to check out critiques, etc. on a make or model I might be interested in purchasing. . . they can be a great resource. And in answer to the individual who said that you should "assume" that the pistol is safe . . . if you are making a video, it takes very vew seconds to start it out by showing that it is safe . . . and the top notch videos I've seen out there always do . . . . I don't assume anything . . . assuming can make you dead. To the individual who enlightened me that I couldn't get shot through the camera by a gun pointed at me . . . thank you, I feel so much safer now. And in answer to those thinking that I am all for censorship of movies . . . take a bite of reality . . . . I certainly am not talking about Dirty Harry . . . but, young people are impressionable and learn a lot of things from "action movies" and then try them and wonder why they get hurt. We've gone from R.O.s reinforcing the concept of gun safety to getting slapped as a child for being reckless with a firearm. A R.O. getting yelled at by a parent for reprimanding a child with a loaded weapon that can kill to how it is done in S.Africa. All good points. The point I was trying to make was that we, as gun owners, have the responsibility to act in a responsible way . . by actions and words. I have been thinking about getting either a P-38 or a P-1 so I did a search for videos showing them being fired and critiqued. I found several that were very good . . . one was unbelievable . . . a young man (looked to be in his twenties or early thirties) dressed up in a Nazi uniform - the title had something to do with a lesson on the P-38 - and the first several minutes was him taking if from his holster and pointing it at the camera . . not once, but a number of times. There are a lot of young people who are mature and responsible gun owners . . . and then we seem to have a lot who give little thoughts to their actions . . . they've grown up on video games and movies where they see people getting killed and it means nothing to them. Anyone who has sat through a CCW class has heard, or should have heard, that there is no such thing as a "gun accident" . . . there is only "gun negligence". Several weeks ago, in my area, we had a report of "shots fired" at a lake. When the police arrived, they found a younger person (age has no bearing however) who was intoxicated and decided to fire a few rounds out of his 9mm out in the front lawn over the lake. Luckily, no boaters or neighbors were hit. He was arrested on the spot and his weapon confiscated . . . . and when he sobered up in jail, he complained that he hadn't done anything wrong because "he had a CCW permit". ???? The point I was trying to make in my OP was that it seems like there is a lot of garbage out there that is promoting guns, but no heed is given to promoting "gun safety" in the videos. Our Constitution gives us the right to freedom of speech . . . and I am not advocating otherwise. If someone wants to make a video on a gun and point it at their head . . they have the right to do it. Just remember that there are others out there whow will watch that video and not have a clue that it is wrong. Everybody has a right to voice their opinion and I've given mine . . for what it is worth . . I'm just saying that if a video on a gun is made, then maybe there should be some thought put in to also showing that the weapon is clear, you don't have a finger on the trigger, you don't wave it around and regardless of if there is a person behind the camera or not, you don't point it at another person . . and if you do point it at the camera, explain what you are doing and why. If my thoughts are "over reactive" . . then fine. . . . they are over reacative. If this post has served nothing more than to make us all remind ourselves about the responsibilities we have as gun owners . . then I guess it was worth it.

bedbugb,

IMO, anytime you can get a group of gun enthusiast discussing/thinking about gun safety, its worth it. Thanks for the thread.;)

A lot of people who have guns and video cameras don't know how to use either. Of course cameras are not usually fatal except to the careers of some politicians.

(All I can say about a certain raving, maniacal, anti-gun congressman, is that his resignation was a great victory for sanity.)

Because the .9 caliber pistol revolver magnum assault rifle could potentially go off while unloaded and shoot through the camera and hit you in the face!

Bedbug, please use your enter key once in a while and put some spaces in there for readability.

You make some great points but my head hurts after reading your last post.
