Am I paranoid?

Did we all forget

If I want to own a fully automatic weapon I have to tell uncle sam I have it and ask his permission to purchase one. High cap mags were banned for a while. There are some places where hollowpoint ammo is a no go. There are others where lead is the devil. I can carry a semi auto hunting but I better not have more than a 5 round clip.

Individual cities refuse to honnor carry permits even though the state does etc etc. There examples of gun control all around us that have happened in slow incriments. Give an inch take a mile.

With Kind Regards, Vermonter

With all that's going on in this world and in this country, how much longer will we be able to legally own and shoot our guns? There are so many gun haters and freedom haters and America haters.

I have this conversation frequently with some of my relatives. I always end up asking "What are you doing to ensure your kids will be able to enjoy firearms when they are our age?"

Most of the replies ranges from "Nothing" to "I joined the NRA."

With the exception of one US Senator, I have written to all my representatives in local, state and federal government and invited them to come target shoot with me. (None have taken me up on it, but I always invite them.)

I vote in every election.
I have joined the NRA.
I stay active in letting people know what I think.

I have talked relatives in to getting their concealed weapons permits, even though they will never carry concealed. I figure the numbers will look good to some politician and they may be afraid to touch the gun rights issue.

If everyone does their little bit, I believe it helps.

I had my mother do this just to twist the nose of the very liberal Vriginia county she lived in.

Arlington hates the 'shall issue' law.

I gave her the $50 permit fee for her birthday.

We really don't like to do revolution threads.

However, I would caution members that a discussion of the defense against government tyranny should NOT lead to insulting other members if they want to posit such a possibility.

So cut out the Jethro type commentary.

The armed populace as a buffer against tyranny is more complex than counting tanks and Aegis cruisers. However, it's not our thing here.

As far as losing guns and gun rights, you can be worried but I doubt that would happen. The legislative increases in gun rights across most states speaks against it. Except for NY, Mass, IL, CA like enclaves - gun rights have expanded. Even in those states gun right are promoted.

Well, isn't government tyranny another way of saying strict, forceful and very conservative law enforcement, which, as I recall from 40 years ago, was what all the old folks wanted who voted for Nixon (which I did). Now that your bed is made, don't crawl under it.

I my opinion the whole scare tactic on (there going to take our guns away) is solely for the purpose of driving up prices just in the same way they claim (we are running out of oil) so can stick it to us on gas prices. That being said, I too wonder if they will ever try?

Well, isn't government tyranny another way of saying strict, forceful and very conservative law enforcement...

No. It isn't.

I'm glad to hear it.

I hate talking about politics, I avoid the political forums, and I appreciate a place to talk about guns without talking about politics.

And I'm sorry for the Jethro comments-- I apologize to any I offended.

Is there some confusion here that a liberal government is tyrannical, which I hope I'm spelling correctly, and a conservative government is not?

Tyranny has nothing to do with either liberal or conservative.

This sounds like attempts at redefining words to fit an agenda.

I don't believe that we are in danger of losing our firearms. I do believe that we all need to be diligent however. There are still groups that will continue to push for firearm, and ammo restrictions and will never stop in their quest to disarm all of us.

I'm more paranoid of going to my annual physical and the Doc telling me I have some form of incurable cancer.

Should there be firearms restrictions to keep guns from any idiots over 21? YES.
Do I care if I lose my firearms rights? Nope, I'll just find me another hobby or do the next item on my bucket list.
I don't eat, sleep and bleed over gun rights. I enjoy it, but that's about it. If it is loosened or restricted, I'll just go with the flow.

There are many things out there that concern people more than do gun rights.

There are many things out there that concern some people more than does freedom of speech. (If that weren't true, people wouldn't constantly be trying to muzzle those with whom they disagree.)

The problem is, without freedom of speech, and the right to bear arms, many of those other areas of concern would rapidly spin outside the realm of control for the general public.

To silence the masses, a ruler must first disarm the peasants.

My opinion is that those who don't care about gun rights, since guns are simply a hobby, haven't read enough history.

I'm sorry, but it is that attitude that will ensure that we eventually lose our rights to bear arms. And, once that happens, the right to free speech, press, assembly, and all those other rights we hold dear will be eroded.

I am not going to stand for that, if there is anything I can do about it. And what your kids, and their kids, etc? You're going to deny them the chance to shoot as a hobby? How irresponsible; maybe you should lose your rights, but don't take mine away in the process.

All one has to do is study human history, and you'll see how dangerous disarming the populace can be.

What an absolutely ignorant statement to make. It shows you have no grasp of Constitutional liberties and less understanding of the topic at hand.

If they take away your firearms rights, then they will be taking away your other rights.

Tell me, at which point does it become too much for you to bear? When you can no longer speak freely? How about if they take away your home in order to house the enforcement agents (appointed by the govt to confiscate personal property)? What if they decide to take your children like the Nazis did the Jews in WW2?

I'm just curious. You're so willing to give up your gun rights. How many other rights are you willing to forfeit?

Because they won't stop at just one.

Research on genocide indicates that the target population has little means to defend themselves. Of course, if they do - you get a civil war.

Still let's be careful of revolution talk and politics and discuss this in the abstract.

I agree with you if we're living in the 1700s. In the 21st century, with thousands (probably millions) of firearms already in existence in this country and the gun industry is doing record profits, if you still believe in complete loss of firearms rights, you're living in history.

Dim the lights, and lock the doors. I'm seeing the conspiracy theorists coming over the hill.
