All the ammo in Wal Mart, Academy, etc. is gone.

Mine Had Zip

Nothing doing at our local Big A over the weekend. Only a few scattered boxes of things here and there, no 9, 45, .223, etc.

What I have found is that every mom and pop place I go into (lots around here) have WAY more supply than any of the big boxes. I can get as many of whatever I want as I have money for. Yep, it costs more to buy at these places, but then I'm supporting my local small businessman/woman and that's a good thing.

One local shop owner today said he has 30K rounds coming today, and 40K more next week (all .223). $549/1,000 case.

Guess I know where I'll be!

The gun thing I can understand.

The ammo thing I cannot understand.

There just is not that many people shooting guns to dry up all that ammo supply that fast.

Its a hoarding mentality. If there is a perceived shortage, then people will acquire as much of a commodity as they can, and this can lead to a real shortage. The same thing happened with gasoline in some parts of the country last fall.

I talked with the guy at the gun counter at the local Walmart last week and he said that if they get a shipment of ammo, someone will come in and buy ALL of it within a day.

I buy those 100 count value packs of 12ga birdshot from WM and boxes of .22 ammo. My local gun shop is pretty much out of .45 ammo except for one WWB fmj and a couple of those "shot shells" for snakes or w/e, but those are useless to me. Their shotgun selection for 12ga is mainly slugs and I don't need those. Needless to say, I do all my ammo shopping at WM. I haven't been there in months so idk what the current situation at mine is.

Getting started in reloading isn't really that hard and need not be that expensive. I am reloading since last Nov. and and working with 2 pistol calibers and 2 rifle calibers so far. Almost all of my equipment was bought used on website forums like this one or Craigslist. I haven't totaled it up but by reading and asking questions of what is absolutely necessary to get started and buying used I saved a bundle of money and have better quality equipment from many of the main manufacturers than I could have purchased new. Components are hard to find but not impossible, that is powder and primers. Brass can always be found either free at local public ranges or purchased.

Get started, its a fun hobby in its own right!

Nice merges!!

I just bought some 100rnd bulk packs of federal .223 last night at wally world.
They also had some more 9mm and .40. Piles of .22. They were out fo .45ACP, but I don't need it at the moment.
Also, the little gas station down the street is now loaded up with defense rounds in 357, .40, and .45ACP.
My local gun shop just stocked up on a bunch of ammo, too. They have cases and cases of that independence stuff, especially 45ACP. It's a little more expensive now, though. I think it's like $16/50.

Seems like people are grabbing what they can. It dose not matter weather they have what it takes to shoot it here. .38 some of the weird old stuff is going too!

7.62x39 can not be had!!

Talked to one of the guys at the local walmart who told me that they had gun dealers from several shops coming in and buying up thier entire pallet of ammo in one swoop before they could get it out on the shelf.
They have started limiting ammo to 5 boxes per person, but the damage is already done.

People need to relax!

What? People are not that crazy around here yet. We have plenty of ammo. I'm actually choosy. I thought that the rush was over about a week ago, but I guess I'm wrong. Maybe I should be buying?

We have a dunhams that just had Wolf .223 on sale for $5.99/box last week. They barely even sold that much. They're stacked with all kinds of other stuff.

As far as 7.62x39, I can get steel or brass, and I was gonna start reloading brass, but the steel is just so much cheaper. It's also hard to find good reloadable stuff for a decent price anymore. Wally world has plenty, but it's like $28 for 40rnds. I have the dies and everything, just can't commit since I already have around 3,000rnds of steel case. I just bought 2,300 two weeks ago for cheap. My sks just gobbles the steel up, too. Hard to justify reloading it.

I was in Wal mart last saturday nad the shelves were bare like others have described for the first time. I had seen days where one type of 9mm was out or something, but out of all the centerfires I shoot they had one box of X39.

I think in some cases, dealers and gunstore owners have been buying Walmart stock and re-selling it.

WM's retail is sometimes close enough to wholesale to make it worthwhile to resell, especially now when it's so easy to move product. At one of the ranges I occasionally visit, the actual cardboard boxes the ammo comes in look like they have used over and over.

A guy i shoot with had to go to 4 or 5 stores to get just 20 boxes of 40SW for a shooting class he took last weekend.

Farm and fleet had an ammo sale last week. Basically, the shelves at the one by me were all but empty and they were giving out rain checks.

The woman at the service desk said they had made up a whole box (of 100) rain checks for 223 ammo and gave them all out the day before.

She said they had gotten a second shipment in of the 223 that was on sale, but all of it went to people with rain checks and none actually made it to the shelves.

went on an ammo hunt today ... Wally World didn't have any 9 or 45, so I trooped over to my favorite gun store ... they had several brands; got 100 rds of Mag-Tech 230gr FMJ for the .45, $20 a 50-rd box; got 100 rds of Mag-Tech 115gr FMJ 9mm, $14 a 50-rd box. It's cheaper online, tho several places I called say they are totally out of 9mm; but when you factor in the huge shipping cost, it's out of the ballpark for a retiree like myself ...

Was starting to believe....

I was starting to believe the hype that Wally was going to stop selling ammo when i went in on Tues, and the total amount in the locked shelves was fewer than 20 boxes, including 22s, and some of the ammo was spread out to make the space less visible.....
Then, this morning, when i went in for other supplies, happened by the ammo case....
Had maybe 60-70 boxes there, and empty shipping boxes on the floor. Ran into ammogal, used to know her years ago, and asked what's up...Said ammo comes in 2-3 times per week and goes out nearly that fast....
Well, i helped her out and removed 800 rds of 9....:D

Bet if i ask her to order me in a spare case, i'd get it....

I stopped in at the local Wally's last night to see what they had. 9's and 45's were very scarce, only one or two boxes each. .38's were totally gone. The .40s were quite plentiful. I picked up 4 boxes of Blazer Brass 180gr for $12.49/box of 50. The clerk asked if i wanted a couple cases of them. Said they still had nearly 200 boxes (of 50 ea.) of them. They had 1 box of WBB (100rds) for sale at $29.95

Their shipment had come in Monday evening and most of the handgun ammo (except .40's) was sold out by noon Tuesday.

Has anyone considered that ammo is being bought in the U.S. and taken into Mexico to the criminals & Cartels? No check of any kind (other than age) to buy ammo, and if you look old enough no check at all most places.

Now before anyone goes nuclear, I am not proposing any solutions here. Just raising a question of a possible contributing explanation to the shortage. It seems like supply can't keep up with demand, yet most folks I talk to are buying about the same or less (because they CAN'T buy) ammo than they usually always did.

I don't want anything getting in the way of any of us buying ammo and doing it with a level of anonymity, but at the same time I do not want scum and criminals buying it all and doing horrible things with it.

Wally's had ammo today!

As many may know, ammo is in short supply and what there is has gone way up in price because of it. The only gunstore in town that has ammo (.40 S&W) is a local one I frequent, but they want $19 for a box of pmc  and $23 for a box of some other lowgrade brand I can't recall right now.

So today I stopped by Wally's to check if the cupboard was still bare. They had a CRATE of .40 boxes at $11 per box of 50. There must have been over 100 boxes there. It was blazer brass, but for that price, I picked myself up 10 boxes. I haven't seen that price on .40 for quite a while. There is still plenty left for others, if you live in Idaho.

They guy said there were expecting a ton of WWB in both .40 and .45, yeehaw.:D
