Thats easy choice for me. I would pick an M14 over an AK47 any time.
When it comes top knock down power, even though the M14 has more, the AK47 has enough (if you stay inside its performance envelope) so we will call that a wash. Now lets talk about accuracy and range. The M14 can reach way further than the AK. When it comes to accuracy, the AK doesn't even get a place at the table when compared to the M14.

If its an either or party, my dates an M14

How about the Saiga in .308(7.62x51) with a 22in barrell, well, best of both worlds. Very good value for your buck, have hung tough with mine against a friends M1A1 at my local range at 250 yds and wish i could test at longer ranges. Of course both rifles have scopes on top but mine was probably $1,000 less out of my bank account. I was trully surprised at how accurate it is with simple Magtech 150 gr FMJ at 200 yrds. Try one,you might like.

Target shooting? M1A. You're not getting an M14 unless you're in a specialized role in the military.

Personal defense and fun shooting? AK with Ultimak rail, a light and Aimpoint micro.

M14s weigh as much as a light machine gun are as long as an boat oar. The Springfield M1a version is made like a Yugo, with cast pot metal. I don't pay top dollar for crappy parts. And If you think carrying around a 13lb rifle is fun, you haven't operated Leather Personnel Carriers very much and certainly haven't jumped from a perfectly good aircraft. It's always the chairborn internet rangers that love the M1a.

The AK is pretty inaccurate. Some are better than others and just improving the sights helps noticeably.

If for some reason I must have a 7.62, I'll take a FAL Para. Sorry, couldn't resist. If you made me pick between M14 or AK, it would be the AK (while holding my nose and aiming to upgrade asap).

I have both rifles and like them, but I voted M1A. The AK is fun to shoot and the ammo is cheap, but it's more fun to be able to hit targets out at 500yds and beyond. That's something the AK will not do.

I voted AK.

I'm not much of a marksman, and the AK is better suited for plinking, which would be my main use for it.

Also, the M1A costs no less than 3X as much as an AK, which is significant as I'm flat broke.

While I have never jumped out of a perfectly good airplane. My leather personnel carriers have logged many a mile with Uncle Sam's Miss Guided Children. I would rather hump an M14 over an AK47 any day.

Although I love the M14 my vote is for the AK. Here's mine! Far from original. The PWS muzzle brake is just amazing! Makes no work of bump firing.

The AKM and Springfield M1A aren't really comparable at all. They have different intended uses, price points, etc. Have you considered any of the other semi-auto designs that chamber 7.62x39?

For my main rifle I use the M14. Best in it's class. Read Boston's gun bible for the best analytical review on all of the semi rifles from the AK to the M14.

For my intermediate rifles, I use the SKS configured as close to the M14 as possible including the tech sights. Cheap ammo and a very fine rifle and in my opinion, better than the AK.

I have some Yugo underfolders for portability that are good shooters but I still prefer the SKS over them.

It was so hard deciding I got both. I still have a hard time deciding which one to take to the range when I can't take both. The M14 has the power, the accuracy, the range, great trigger, everything people love about them. It is however, much larger to shoulder than the AK is. It holds only 2/3 of the ammunition of the AK, it weighs more than the AK. The AK brings to target faster than the M14. My AK's front sight in canted though. The Tapco trigger is all creep. I love them both.
