NYPD gun permit scandal!

Typical NY BS. Rockers get gun permit in NYC

From the NY Post:

------------------------------------------------------------------------

November 24, 2002 -- A top NYPD official is being probed for helping rockers Steven Tyler and Joe Perry obtain pistol licenses in return for alleged VIP treatment at an Aerosmith concert and ritzy after-party, The Post has learned.

Deputy Inspector Benjamin Petrofsky, the former head of the NYPD License Division, is the target of two probes into the circumstances that enabled Tyler and Perry to receive "carry permits," which allow the rockers to legally possess concealed handguns in the Big Apple.

The NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau is trying to determine if Petrofsky violated departmental regulations when he cut through red tape to help Tyler and Perry, sources said.

The Manhattan district attorney's office is reportedly examining whether or not, in return, Petrofsky got "illegal benefits" - a ticket to the show, backstage access and a limo ride to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famers' post-concert party.

Petrofsky, reached by The Post on Friday, declined to comment on the allegations, except to insist he had done nothing improper.

Sources said the flap arose in the fall of 2001 when Tyler, Aerosmith's lead singer, and Perry, the band's lead guitarist, approached the NYPD License Division for gun permits, sources said.

At the time, the rockers - whose fame and wealth has attracted stalkers over the years - already held gun licenses in Massachusetts and several other states, a source said.

Most applicants are required to show up at Police Headquarters to detail why they deserve a license, demonstrating they carry large sums of cash, work in dangerous jobs or had been the brunt of credible threats.

But insiders say some celebrities and other powerbrokers have quietly had the bureaucratic process streamlined for them.

On Nov. 12, 2001, Petrofsky, then a captain, allegedly traveled to Madison Square Garden with another cop to fingerprint the duo before an Aerosmith concert that night.

Both rockers were soon issued carry permits, though an NYPD spokesman declined to say what guns they're licensed to carry.

The Internal Affairs probe was jump-started when a sergeant in the unit, Steve Oteri, secretly recorded the co-worker who accompanied Petrofsky bragging about their momentous night out, a source said.

Petrofsky was reassigned to the Intelligence Division when the investigation began, but since then has been promoted to deputy inspector.

He later admitted to investigators that he attended the Aerosmith concert, but only after paying an acquaintance for his ticket. The acquaintance, whose name is being withheld, spoke with The Post, insisting Petrofsky did not take a limousine ride nor attend a party.

"He's a family man with five lovely kids, and the suggestion that he did anything improper is absolutely preposterous," said another friend, Bo Dietl, a former NYPD detective.

Corruption at NYPD? No, really?

Ahh, gun control. The more things that are against the law, the more money for the po-po and opportunities for corruption.

Not suprised. Personally, I don't blame Tyler and Perry for perhaps using their star power to get permits. If I were in their position, I would.

However, the statement that they also have carry permits in other states makes me wonder. non-resident LTC licenses in MA are easy to get if you follow all the rules. Connecticut, too.

Aerosmith packs heat

Steven Tyler and Joe Perry just got permits to carry in NYC! The only trouble is the official who issued it did so in exchange for backstage passes and a limo ride to the concert.

It sounds like Jim March has his life's work cut out for him after he cleans up PRK! (Unless the is a like minded soul on the east coast to take up the banner?)

(Edited to post Joe's name after mental vapor lock cleared)

Last year I purchased a handgun in a PPT here in CA. While doing the background check through the CA DOJ at the gun store performing the transfer, the seller, a retired gentleman, and I were conversing about gun laws in general and CA gun laws in particular. During our discourse he indicated he had moved to CA some 30 years ago from NYC where he had a CCW permit. I was amazed! I asked him how the heck he ever obtained a gun permit in New York City. He said it was easy. He worked through a police Lieutenant and paid a few people including a Desk Sergeant processing the paperwork. He had the license for 10 years, he said. BS? Bravado? True? I don't know. Graft in a big city is not unusual though.

Isn't this the same band that has that song "Jamie's got a Gun" (little anti-gun message there).

So they don't think any of us should have access to firearms, but they can bypass the whole legal system to carry.

:barf:

Hmmm ... not sure about that. Ted Nugent claims to have gotten them interested in guns and now they own a bunch of title II stuff.

Not that I like elitism in CCW issuance ...

Have Tyler or Perry ever been convicted of any drug offenses? If so, their Massachusetts gun permits are automatically void by state law. NY too i'd bet.

1. I don't think "Janie's Got a Gun" has an anti-gun message (but its been a while since I listened to it).

2. Aerosmith is into guns. How cool is that?

3. Preferential treatment for elites sucks...but if you were in their shoes tell me you wouldn't consider doing it as well? ;)

4. Paging Mr. Jim March...Mr. March...

I think that Areosmith band members pack is marvelous. I think that permits can be bought in NYC by celebrities and Ubercitizens but not the hoi poloi stinks like week old fish.

Most of the guys, esp. Steven Tyler, are really into knives.

I mean REEEEEALLY into knives.

Like when they were interviewing with a mag, Tyler pulled out a $1200 custom automatic knife!!! :D

Gun and knife knuts + great music + hot videos =

Btw,

I was just pointing out that the newspaper was making it seem like non-resident licenses from anywhere are hard to get.

Most of us know which permits we can get easily. MA, to many people's suprise, is one of them. Us gunnies know, but most people don't. Heck, I would venture that most people think CCW are banned in a lot of states by defaults.

As for NYC permits for non-residents, they may try to say "He works here", and technically, they do, if they do concerts.

The song 'Janie's got a Gun' is about a child who ends up shooting her abusive father. I s'pose you could put any spin on it that you like.

aerosmith lyrics
Janie's Got a Gun
Dum, dum, dum honey what have you done?
Dum, dum, dum it's the sound of my gun
Dum, dum, dum honey what have you done?
Dum, dum, dum it's the sound

Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Her whole world's come undone
From lookin straight at the sun
What did her daddy do?
What did he put you through?
They said when Janie was arrested
They found him underneath a train
But man he had it comin
Now that Janie's got a gun
She ain't never gonna be the same

Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run

Tell me now it's untrue
What did her daddy do?
He jacked a little bitty baby
The man has got to be insane
They say the spell that he was under
The lightning and the thunder
Knew that someone had to stop the rain

Run away, run away from the pain
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Run away, run away from the pain
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Run, run away

Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run
What did her daddy do?
It's Janie's last IOU
She had to take him down easy
And put a bullet in his brain
She said cause nobody believes me
The man is such a sleaze
He ain't never gonna be the same

Run away, run away from the pain
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away, run away from the pain
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Run, run away

Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun

Janie's got a gun
Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run
Because Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody's on the run
Janie's got a gun

It has been brought to my attention through training someone who has a NYC carry permit that the hardest part is getting it. after that they re-issue them to you like candy without checking out anytrhing. Very interesting.

.....and NO YOU CAN'T HAVE A PERMIT K80GEOFF!:D

Regardless if they (Aerosmith) is Pro or Anti, I dont expect to have the NYPD firearms licensing division pay me a visit at my home so that I can complete my handgun application. Ohmp!...excuse me...I was just thinking bout the NYPD..:barf:
