adjustable sights

Bob Wright - please feel free to post any where you want! That's what this site is for.

Everybody is not always going to agree with you but that's okay. We can always agree to disagree.

Also I sure like seeing the pictures of your handguns. I don't know how many times guns are being discussed and you post a picture showing just what were talking about and it clears things up considerably.

There's several pistols I own that I wish had adjustable sights for a fairly parochial reason: they have "night sights" and I worry that I might damage the relatively fragile tritium vials if I start tapping on them with hammer and brass punch to drift them in the direction they need to go. I know there are sight "pushers" but the few that I'm acquainted with are relatively expensive and generally proprietary in design. Any suggestions as how to drift a night sight without fear of damaging them-or am I being too cautious?

That's a legitimate concern.

That said, there are various sight pushers that are flexible (i.e., will work with almost all handguns) and are available for under $100, and other more sophisticated ones that are very expensive.

Here's one that looks pretty good for $75... (I have no connection to this firm or their product... it's just offered as an example of something that looks pretty good and which isn't obscenely expensive.) On some of the local forums where I participate, guys frequently show pictures of similar tools they've bought for around $50,and they seem happy with them. Check EBAY. There is hope...

Here's a link to THE tool shown above from Amazon. I don't vouch for the tool shown...

I have the P500 Pro Sight tool, offered by Brownells, which now sells for $270+. It was only about $120 when I bought mine, maybe 15 years ago. That's a PAINFUL increase. I don't think I would pay THAT price, today. (I was still working, back then -- retired now. My gun budget isn't the same... :() Note: mine is a slightly older version -- it doesn't have the knob on the top which holds the front of the slide down...

Thanks, Walt; that is helpful. I'll have to think on this some more. I'm retired too and cost, always relevant, is even more so now...:(

Adjustable sights are pretty much a good idea on any handgun in my experience. Most any fixed sight model that I pick up shoots off to the left for me due to my grip and trigger finger manipulation...after 50+ years of pistol shootin' I'm not about to change any thing to accommodate any one model...

That said, if that model Taurus has dovetailed sights, I'd try adjusting them first before going to the expense of adding a windage and elevation rear sight, and most probably a new front sight.

While I do love to work up loads for my guns, and adjustable sights make changing zeros easy, I find that eventually I settle on a single every day load and leave the zero alone.

Windage is of course the hard part. I've tried banging on the front sight a cpl times and in one instance had to re-solder the blade. Another method, is to widen the rear notch to make a windage adjustment. I did this on a new Vaquero in .45 LC with good results. It moved my 25 yard point of impact 2" to the right and required just a spot of cold blue to make the gun as good as new.

Hope you have some luck getting your Taurus shooting the way you're lookin'. Rod
