Adjust powder or coal?

Good luck with the testing. I'm doing some testing also. I weighed my cases , found a wide range in weight, could cause case volume differences. Would change POI. A hunt for that perfect round. Most of the problem is the human factor.

I read most of that thread your talking about. Seeing that I've already loaded these rounds I will have to play with case weight on the next go around. Let me know your results I am curious as well.

Looking back on the posts on your C.O.A.L. I measure from base to ogive , using Sierra MatchKings the COAL aren't exact , I'm sure due to the tips. The A - Max's are dead on at 2.800 , bullets seem more exact. The Sierra's seated an measured to ogive , then measure the COAL are all over the place. The A - Max seated an measured to ogive , then measure the COAL are dead on 2.800

Yes I get the same thing when comparing the two manufactures as a whole . Hornady match bullets both BTHP and A-max are more consistent from ogive to tip then Sierra match kings . I have not done extensive test or measuring but it seems to be across the board with all bullet weights in .224 and .308 .

I tell you what , 77gr SMK are VERY inconsistent from ogive to tip . I think I've measured as much as .012 on one bullet or I should say an ES of .012 in a box of 50 with not even one set of ten bullets having the same length in the box .

It bothered me for a short time but you get over it when you shoot little groups with the Sierra bullets . They also seem for me at least to be easier to dial in a load with then the A-max . That said I shoot more Hornady bullets by far . Two reasons for that . I've been able to work up some pretty accurate loads and they always seem to be on sale somewhere . I often get the 178gr A-max for $10 a box less then I can get the 175gr SMK , sometimes even better deals .

The biggest issue I have with the 77's is loading for my NM service rifle . It's the only thing I load that bullet for . That is having to seat the bullets so deep to be sure they feed in the mag . I have to seat them on the whole deeper to insure when that .012 to long bullet comes up it will not hang up in the mag . I should separate those out and likely will but I've not been loading or shooting that rifle much since I started loading for hand guns . I intend on shooting more rifle in the near future though .

Have you tried the Sierra tipped match kings ? I have another 500 box of 168 SMK's
250 A - Max's. The 168 Sierra TMK is next on my list.

I was reading some old forums and found on page 501 under "underdawg" posting of col for 308 win you mentioned a way to find the sweet spot was to adjust col then play with charge. This seems opposite from what I've read on this thread. What is the best approach between the two? That posting was back in 09.

I still haven't had a chance to hit the range and test my recent workups, however that last post I was referring to another thread that said play with coal until your happy then adjust powder. This thread was just the opposite. Does it matter which one is done first? The rounds I just put together are exactly the same with coal but .5 grain difference. Once I find a decent load I will narrow down by .1 grain. Then work on coal, unless the reverse is better?
