A Woman's CCW

I saw a woman last week in my local range using a Walther P22 as her CCW (on her belt with some kind of Kydex holster).

She was trying to get her wallet out of her purse and that's how I noticed the little guy. She was probably 5'3 and 140 pounds.

I know the concept that having something is better then nothing-- but a .22? Is there even any .22lr that's powerful enough to stop a 200 pounds bay guy?
Will you allow your wife to pack a .22 as her primary ccw?

If that's what she can shoot and is comfortable with it, I say more power to her. Better than not carrying anything at all.

Yes, yes, and yes. I even carry a .22 as my own choice for CCW at times, without any worries.

Well, I'm more like 240, and I'm not a bad guy but it would sure as heck stop me. The SIGHT of it would stop me. It could be loaded with 22 shorts or rat shot and I'd quit doing whatever was the reason it was pointed at me.

I'm confident that a CO2 pellet pistol would stop me.

A face full of .22 bullets will put a damper on anyone's day. I used to carry a very accurate Astra Constable .22 L.R. pistol, have carried a S&W #317 .22 L.R. revolver a good bit due to the light weight. I had a Walther TPH briefly (YUCK!!) and often carry my son's S&W #2213 .22 auto.

Look at the havoc John Hinckley wreaked with a .22...and think of what he could of done had trained a bit harder. A .22 rimfire can be effective. If a person (like the lady you saw) can shoot a .22 well and is comfortable with it then that person is well-armed.

My next door neighbor is a E.R. nurse at a metro Atlanta, GA hospital and has some terrific horror stories of .22 caliber bullet paths and destruction in human bodies.

Can a 22 cal. stop a Big Guy?

GOOGLE; Trooper Mark Coates shooting, 6'0"+. Ex-Marine, killed with one shot from a NAA .22LR mini-revolver.

If I had a wife who liked guns; I doubt she would give a damn about my preference for her carry gun. :(

I would allow my husband to carry whatever firearm he wanted to carry and was comfortable with. He's an adult, after all, and capable of making his own decisions about how, when, and whether to protect himself.

a .22 is just as deadly as a 44 magnum in the right hands. In my opinion a .22 beats, mace, a knife, a big stick, or a fist anyday.

Allow?

When the heck did my wife give up her free will and decide that i should have the power to allow or deny her the right to do anything? Were she that weak willed I don't think I would have as attracted to her as i am.

That woman you saw made a choice. Its her choice. You don't have to respect her choice but please respect her right to make that choice.

I wouldn't "allow" anybody who thinks they can dictate such a personal decision to be my husband.

They don't need a wife; they need a Jack Russel terrier...

A .22 killed Robert Kennedy.

I think when the wife's concealed handgun license comes in, I'll be happy what ever she carries.

I believe as a prior poster stated, the presence of a gun would scare most people away.

No offense Tamara, but some women actually want their husband to make these kind of decisions, among other things.

Considering she probably could shoot somebody 11 times in less than three seconds.

Don't make her day! Unless you feel lucky!

I would be supportive of anything she decided to carry because she currently is not a shooter. She isn't quite an anti but she's close enough we have some interesting discussions.

I took my .22 to the range today and it was very fast and easy for me to spray 10 rounds into a 4 inch group at 7 yards in under four seconds. If she can do half that I wouldn't be too worried about her. I think for all but the uber determined bad guy the sight of a gun is enough to make them re-consider, being plugged with four or five 55 grain pills in fast order should make them further reconsider.

I also think women can make up their own minds about what their comfortable with as far as firearms go...dictating calibers and gun sizes to others seems to be a philosophical issue that the gun community is supposed to be against last time I checked.

If MY wife was not borderline anti gun and could teach hear to shoot and she shot a 22 better then a 9mm or any other for that matter,Thats exactly the weapon I think she should carry but the final choice would have to be hers Not Mine. Now hypothetically take that 22 in a high stress situation life or dealth with that 22 vs any other that she doesn't do as well in a norm which gun should she carry.

"No offense," the man says.

My observation has been that 'most any statement that begins that way is bound to be offensive.

Poor little women, can't make up their own minds. Need some big strong man to do all their thinking for 'em. That's why the firearms forums are full of men saying happily, "Why, my wife does exactly everything I tell her to do! And thinks exactly how I want her to think!!"

:D :D

(Actually, of course you have a point. Some women enjoy abusive relationships. But being on the submissive end of an abusive relationship just goes to show you probably don't have the mindset to defend yourself anyway.)

*sigh*

Anything is better than nothing, even a two-shot Derringer.

Check the statistics, there are LOT of people in graveyards who were killed with a .22.

Allow? Allow? ALLOW? I got news for ya, men don't own their wives any more. My wife is a free entity and as such, has the right AND capability to choose her own carry weapon. Except for one gun I bought for her (which I knew she would love) she has purchased all of her handguns to HER satisfaction. At the moment, she carries a Keltec P32 and she's darned accurate with it, too. Many of them don't fit me and I don't like to shoot them. What, in your mind, makes a woman any less capable of deciding what to carry to the extent she needs "permission" to carry it from anyone? Surprise...many woman can probably out-shoot you without even trying. They probably know more about guns, too, since you seem to think a .22 won't kill.

A carry gun is a VERY personal choice, and as such, should NOT be decided by anyone except the carrier. No one can tell anyone else what to carry.

I'll repeat what has been said MANY times before - SHOT PLACEMENT IS EVERYTHING. A .22 in the eye is a MUCH more effective "stopper" than a .45 to the arm. If she empties that 10 round mag into the BG's face, chest, or belly - I guarantee you he'll notice it.
