A tough decision

Jim, she mentioned that too. ;)

Weight and overall size is more of a concern for carry. Recoil is more of a concern in practice, and as she said in email, she's not gonna shoot the bad guy 100+ times.

Well Coinneach I'd recommend an alloy framed commander sized 1911 (with a beavertail so it doesn't bit like mine) but you need longish fingers to work a 1911. The alloy frames are light but hammer bite and muzzle flip are a serious issue, as is limp wristing. A good 45 9mm, or 38 super should last a lifetime.

If you recall shooting mine in the rain that day, the sights are pretty small and the muzzle flash is noticable.

Maybe a colt govt pocketlite/pony or dare I say it.. pocket 9 (if you can find one?)

I have no experience with the mini glocks but a loaded 45 single stack and a loaded 9mm double stack wiegh about the same.

Then again if small tough and duable is what she needs a ruger sp101 is a ggod choice.. stgart w/ 38 spec. train up to the magnums.

anyone else?

Coinneach - Try to find a Colt Pocket Nine.
9mm is Much Much better than the .32... its trigger is much much better than the Walther... and the cherry on top is that its not that much bigger, while IIRC keeping the weight lower. Good carry gun, and a better range gun too. As far as .45 is concerned - If she has a little money to spend... tell her to call Cylinder and Slide for one of those nifty little Adventurer pistols... Of course this is coming from a fanatical Detonics zealot. :D

That FEG pistol is a vomitous mass of unholy pigiron that is unworthy of the sacred .45ACP caliber for which it is chambered.
Where is the Inquisition when you need it?

Well now the scenerio completely changes. If she wants a lightweight .45, have you considered the Kimber Ultra Carry? It's a lightweight .45 ACP. It'll kick but for defensive purposes, it'll more then serve it's purpose.

What about a used Colt LW commander or officer's?

Just for kicks, NAA makes a mini revolver in .22 mag. It's really tiny too.

If you decide on something, send me an email and I can see how much I can get one for with my new discounts.

Judging solely by the criteria presented I think the Glock 36 is it. Light, compact, low recoil, small grip, light(ish) trigger. Marcus

Smallest .45 I've ever used was a Detonics Compact (only a smidge bigger than an AMT backup). Nasty little pistol, but it fits in your pocket and will get the job done for 10' and under.

I have (and like) a Springfield Officer .45, but would go with a Kimber CDP if I had to do it over again -- the Springfield has lots of sharp corners.

I just recently switched to a SiG P245. I prefer it to the Officer because its a more comfortable shooter and the DA pull doesn't bother me (personal taste). It is significantly wider, though.

If she doesn't mind carrying cocked & locked and she wants a crisp trigger, I'd suggest the Kimber.

Stop; acquire S&W (yes, S&W!) 3913; end search.

45's are too big, and the ones that are the right size and weight kick too much.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the suggestions. :)
Fatigue was not a problem for me, it was the recoil beating me up all day that finally did it... I couldn't make a fist for several hours. (whine) ;)
I think I can handle .45 for practice, but now that I think about it, when we did "point and shoot" (???I think that's what it's called), the blast going up in my face was tolerable for practice, but I'm thinking in a stressful situation, it could be a bit much. Plus, my uh, *flinch* issue will probably rear it's ugly head if I'm already in near freak-out mode.
So, maybe .45 is cool for practice (and for fun :)), but I guess I should try something smaller for carry.
hmmmm....so many choices.....how's a woman supposed to pick just one? :D

"hollow points...are a girl's best friend...." heehee :D (sorry, lame joke mode off)

1) Colt Police Positive Special / 38 spl.

2) Browning 380's in single stack and single action. 10/71 ( post GCA of 68 ) for matches
or defense, and 1955 380 for ccw or back-up.

If she likes a .45 ACP but wants something the size of a G26, just go 10 models up, and get the G36. If she wants more capacity, get the G30. I personally like the G26. ;)

Umm the G 36 is was not a fun gun to shoot with 230 ball or hydra shocks...I would say it is almost as bad as 357/125JHP's in my 4" Security Six.

Is your V10 that was used ported?
How many rounds were fired?
What size and wt limits are you looking for?

Guessing from the pistols you listed I would suggest the following for consideration. Star Firestar in 9 or 40, and the HK P7M8...they are a bit on the heavy side perhaps. Are you wanting above or below 20 oz?

Would you consider a Taurus titanium 45 long colt with a trigger job [not REAL small but light wt and a 45 use cor bon ammo or such]?

Glamdring, the V10 is ported. 100 rounds (50 ball & dummy, 50 for score).

My Ti .357 is going back to the factory (as in, for the second time). I'm not real comfortable with them at the moment, QC-wise.

I wish I hadn't sold my G26... that would be about perfect for her. :(

-Small overall size
-Light weight.
-Decent caliber
-Fairly light trigger
-Thin grips

The Glock 26 fails the last test. A Kahr MK9 weighs about the same loaded as a G26 and someone already mentioned a Kahr P9. Depends on how you define a light trigger. S&W 342, 642, and 638 would meet the requirements. You didn't like a previous posters mention of the SIG P239 and P245, but they can be slicked, use a short trigger, and convert to DAO. The Glock 36 already mentioned is another possibility.

SIGs are too large and heavy for her to carry. Yes, REALLY. Their DA trigger reach is way too long (guys, when I say small hands, I mean SMALL FREAKIN' HANDS!). Fine guns they are, but they simply won't work in this case.

No DA triggers at all if possible. That kicks out SIGs, Berettas, CZ, Kahr, and all revolvers except for maybe the Ruger Vaquero or Blackhawk, and I don't think those are gonna happen.

Criterion 1: Manageable (meaning short and light) trigger.
Criterion 2: low overall size and weight.
Criterion 3: caliber.
Criterion 4: recoil.
Criterion 5: price.

Idea: a Llama 1911 clone in 9mm?

The Kimbers if you can come up with the cash seem to me to be the best choice. Very managable recoil, lightweight, nice SA trigger, and small grip all in .45ACP.

Downsides: Price, 7+1 capacity, Price, Some spit Brass in your face, Price and the grips can cut.
