A new law in NY?

Please catch me up

Some of you guys who live in NY, catch me up on the current laws. I left NY in '75, and I don't think the laws have gotten any less restrictive since.

I had a NY pistol permit, obtained at age 18! 5 sets of fingerprints, 4 photographs, 3 character references, background investigation(s), and then it went before a county judge for approval. The individual handguns were listed on the back of the permit, by make, caliber, barrel length (?), and serial number. Those guns, and only those guns were permitted.

At that time, the permit was not valid in New York City (it said so right on it). It was a permit to possess and carry. OPEN carry. At that time there was NO legal CCW for private citizens in NY. Has this changed?

Permits were issued for specific reasons (self protection, hunting and sporting, target, etc), and it was entirely up the the judge to approve or deny your application, if he didn't like the purpose your put down. A judge in Warren county might approve it only for target shooting. Another judge might not. A Saratoga judge might approve for hunting/sporting, but deny an application that said self protection. An Albany county judge might deny everything except self protection. Each judge in each county was completely on their own as to their reason for approval or denial.

Also at that time the law did not specify a required age. I know of one permit issued to a 14 year old. I got mine at 18, and so did my brother. Generally they were not issued under 21 but it was not a written limit.

The law said you coundn't BUY a handgun unless you were at least 21, but you gound get a permit at any age, it was up to the judge's discretion. The reason behind this was another part of the state law. We found this out after my parents were in a car accident. Dad had a permit, and about a half dozen handguns. If he had died in the accident, under the law, his guns would have to be surrendered to the police, since there was no other permit holder in the household. We were told that if we turned the guns in to the State Police, they would be kept 30 days, and then destroyed. If we turned them in to the County Sheriff, and applied for a permit, they would be kept until the permit was approved or denied (this normally took a bit longer than 30 days). So my mother applied at once, and got a permit for his guns. My brother and I each applied (and recieved approval) when we turned 18. The permit was good for life, unless revoked.

In 2002 (IIRC) I got a letter from New York state, saying since I was not a state resident, they wanted their permit back. And they wanted to know what happened to the guns listed on it! It struck me as rather humorous, as I hadn't seen the permit (or been a NY resident) for over 25 years!

So, you guys still living there, please fill me in on how things have changed.
Thank you.

I read threads like this to reinforce my decision to live in WA State when I haven't seen the sun in 2 or 3 weeks. Life is a series of tradeoffs, and I don't care if Ethiopian take-out is available at 0400 hours if I have to beg some government tapeworm for the "privelege" of owning a firearm. I wouldn't live in NYC for any amount of money- turned down a contract job there for $40/hr with lots of OT when my TX unemployment ran out and we were burning thru our savings. The Ouija board told me that Calif would be turning into the DPRK and in '92 and we got the *bleep* out. WA isn't perfect but at least we still have most of the rights of free Americans, and I thank God for this every time I leave the house with Mr. Steyr. The problem with NY is not just that they want to live like socialist sheeple, but that their political parasites (Hitlery, Rangel, Schumer, et. al.) want the Fedgov to force us all to be just like them. Just like it's hard to believe that Britain was once the master of the largest empire in the world, it's hard to believe that New York once stood up to the King and fought for the rights of free men. This is an observation, not a personal flame- please don't close the thread on my account.

It is a city that has much to offer. It is especially attractive to those who are not White Christians as there are more opportunities to be accepted in NY and NYC than in most other areas of the United States. I may be a white male raised as a Catholic but even I see the truth in that statement.

Yeah it is an attractive place to those of us who aint white and christian. :barf:

I'll file that one away. Good to see the good old folks in the heartland, deep down inside, still probably believe the Protocols.

Blind adherence to the second amendment without more doesnt make one a true american
