A gun for when your vehicle craps out

I support cc and have a cc permit. When this issue came up in my state my only concern was that when a permit holder wanted to enter an area where weapons were not permited, the gun would be in the car. What a better place for a thief to set up shop.

My gun is with me unless otherwise restricted by law. I'd never leave a gun in a vehicle unless forced by law. My gun is safer on my hip rather than in any gun safe in an unattended vehicle.

I agree with Mr March on this one. Unless you live in an area where there are never any vehicle thefts or break ins, don't leave a gun in the car.

Leaving a gun unattended in a vehicle is just plain lazy.

Unless you're going to be regularly driving down very long isolated stretches of unpatroled highway I think a CCW should do just fine. If you are On Star or something similar would probably be a lot more useful than a firearm.

I keep a LCP in my pocket and one other handgun in full view in my truck. Mostly the truck gun is for predation, but I guess if I'm out changing a flat and a bad guy gets me my wife can defend herself and the kids.

Some times I leave them on the counter, some times in the car, more than likely in my saddle bag if it's not SOB. I have no gun safe at home or in my vehicles, I have no use for some thing I have to unlock in what could be split seconds of a life threatening situation. Because we go about our life, each in our own and separate ways day by day, only concerned with " me,me,me". We have let an on slot of criminals, and "Big Brother" government dictate how we have to live, sooner or later we may wake up. I will continue to protect myself, my love ones, my property, and anyone else. Sorry for soap boxing.

I got a bike wire lock and lock it up in the trunk, when not driving, through the trigger guard and the frame of the car. Grated it will not stop any one who is really intent on getting it but it should slow them down and keep the smash and grab dudes from getting it.

Just an idea...

Relying on On Star or a cellphone for protection while traveling anywhere?

Has this forum been merged with the Brady folks?

Sorry for the 'french'....

but give me a damn break.

For those that suggest this I humbly suggest to them they get all their guns out of their house and off their person and put 911 on speed dial.

If they're in your trunk, they have access to a tire iron, jack handle or whatever they broke into the trunk with in the first place.

You think a meth-head is going to leave a gun there, or is he going to bust the triggerguard first?

Responsibility, people.

That all being said, my gun isn't in case my truck breaks down. More like if society does, either on a large scale (riot) or small one (assault/carjacking, etc.). I carry an emergency kit with food, water, basic first aid and survival gear in my vehicle. I got in the habit of doing this when I was a college student in the Appalachians with a car that was dodgy at best sometimes. Break down in the winter, at night in the wrong place, and you can get dead quick up there from hypothermia. I'm also a AAA member and pay extra for the premium package with better roadside assistance benefits. It's paid for itself several times in no-cost to me towing and lockout coverage.

Layers of security folks..........a gun ain't always the answer.........

Why do I seem to agree with people who think like RantingRedneck? Maybe it's because we have the same concerns, whether I'm going to eastern Oregon to fish, or the south side of Oakland to see an old friend. I don't know if I'm going to be in a really disabled vehicle out in the boonies for a day or so, or in a slum when the Hayward fault line decides to cut loose; I want to have options. The idea that we in our so called "civilized" world are doing so in an illusion created by an interconnected system of telephones, uninterrupted electrical power and reliable access to police and emergency services is not new, and one doesn't have to be paranoid to take it seriously. If the system ever breaks down for long, the illusion will go away rather quickly. The food, water, first aid (a bit more than basic), and survival gear in my van; along with tools, foam pad to sleep on and sleeping bag, and an extra spare tire are enough for me to survive for quite some time. I also have a neat gun vault that will hold a Ruger 10-22, ammo for it and my CCW, a Marine Corps KABAR and a bit more. If my van is broken into, the gun vault is going to take quite a while to break into, and time and noise are not things pleasing the average car burglar. If they steal my ride and cut the vault open there will be little joy as the Ruger 10-22's bolt is hidden under the dash of the van. If I lose it and the rest I'll report it all to the police and my insurance carrier. It's a small risk for having some options.:)

I carry an extra messenger bag, so I can put my CCW peice in that.

In rural Ky and WV, chances are you won't be able to pick up a cell phone signal where you break down and a cell phone is practically worthless....

Usually you have to hoof it to the nearest phone or business.....

A few years ago over in Pike County a guy was changing a tire when he got shot and killed while broken down by the side of the road.

Which is why I seldom travel without a gun.

To me that sentiment is just further push towards blaming the victim of a crime rather than the perpetrator. If my gun is stolen along with my car then that's just further loss for me on top of my car being stolen. After all if my car itself is stolen and then used in a drug run I don't personally catch any blame for daring have have my car stolen in the first place do I? Of course not. I'll not treat my gun any differently. 90% of the time I keep a gun of some sort in my car. Until it's declared illegal to do so I'll continue doing that because I like to always have one available if I need it.
Of course, but you're making sense. When was the last time this administration's lawmakers made any sense along the lines of guns and crime? Whether he meant it that way or not, Jim's message also makes a lot of sense now with the current administration's thirst for ammunition to use against American gunowners.
