9mm or .45?

My father is 250 5-10 and has paws like a bear and he loves his G-27 with the +1rnd mag extension that lets you wrap all of your fingers on the grip. (it shoot much better with it) really its a nice piece if you need a nice concealable weapon and they make all kinds of stuff for them, My fathers has a lazer sight attached to the front of the trigger guard,a clip to where he can holster it on his belt and a nice pair of night sights for only $385 out the door (yah gotta love pawn shops)

I still say revolver any day. "What do you call 6 guys armed with 9mm versus 1 Bob Mundy and a rusty 45 colt, yep, 6 dead bad guys":D. As far as the recoil thing here is a good chart for you and as you can see the 40 is the worst of the 3 but all are pretty mild in comparison until you reach 44 mag or above. Bottom line the larger bullet does the most damage so of the 3 go with the 45. Still today considered by most the best overall defense caliber plus there is probably a good reason why most law enforcement got away from the 9mm.:)

What you should have gotten from all of the above posts is this: the .45 and the 9mm are both great rounds, and you have chosen a great platform for them (Glock). Don't accept a definitive answer as to which is a better round from anyone or any number of people (myself included). Get out to the range and test fire both, be knowledgeable of the ammo prices, read up on ballistics, basically know the guns and calibers inside out.

then Choose.

Superdave,

Many - but not all - I'm sure would agree that while at first glance the G30 seems about the same size as the G19, it is not. I've had both and while I think the G30 is a fine handgun, I personally found it a difficult piece to carry. You may not find that to be the case.

I still have my G19, sold the 30 last year and then picked another 9mm package - a S&W M&P compact. I shoot the M&P better than I shoot the Glock 19.

In .45acp I prefer a 1911 platform.

The real question imho is which of the two do you shoot most accurately. This is the one you should choose.

Good Luck

Either caliber is more than sufficient to take care of buisness. That being said I prefer the 45 its got a bigger wounding profile, 9mm's expand but a .45 never contracts it stays .45 in the worst possible scenario. The 9mm is a good round because it gives you the option of a lot of ammo. I believe it is more than adequate to stop a person even FMJ 9mm's properly placed. I just think the 45 will get the stopping done quicker plus my launch platform is a 45 caliber. I choose my pistol before the caliber for defense.

Well everybody I really appreciate all your help. I finally made my purchase today:D I went with a new Gen 4 Glock 19. New grip and even less recoil. Gotta say I'm pretty happy

Yea. I am not a Glock fan at all but that doesnt mean I'm ignorant, the Glock 19 is an excellent firearm. In fact if I was forced to choose a Glock it would be the 19. Now get some nice Speer Gold dots 124 and 147 the same for HST's if you can find em. Use +p sparingly if at all, I tend to stay away from them on a regular basis.

Congratulations. This is what I was going to suggest. The Glock 30 is a good choice, too, and as 45's go, it's a pussycat to shoot. But if you want something lightweight to carry and smaller guns don't fit your hand, the 19 is the way to go.

I like my 1911's and my S&W scandium 1911 is my favorite carry gun, but I carry a little S&W snubby most of the time, because it's just too hard to conceal a 1911 comfortably, especially in this weather, especially with what I do for a living. I can't wear a Hawaiian shirt all day long.
