9mm Dislike

I dislike fotay and anything out of a revo. Was an early adopter of .40 but dislike the feel of how they shoot, prefer 9 & 45.

Of course have owned severeal revolvers, 38, 357, 44 mag, loaded my own rounds too but just prefer the way autos shoot.

My first handgun-which I still have-was my Browning HP in 9MM. Have 5 9MM handguns plus my Marlin Camp Carbine. Only fault I find with it is like all other semiautomatic rounds-retrieving one's brass for reloading can be a pain. Also, depending on the handgun, accuracy with lead bullets can be tricky. Depends mainly on the rate of twist in the barrel and the depth of the lands and grooves.

I love the 9MM, 2nd choice for pistol caliber. Guess the 1st :D. I have never really had any interest in the .40 cal. I really don't know why its maybe because it was a solution to a problem that didnt exist. The 9mm didnt underperform in the 1986 FBI MIAMI SHOOTOUT the officers did. No disrespect to the agents that lost their lives that day but it was a poorly executed stop on dangerous felon's. Platt, an Ex-Ranger, was able to do devistating damage with his .223 Mini 14 , shot a total of 12 times throughout the shootout, by 9mm's, 38's, and 00 buckshot but never knocked off his feet. He was hit in the feet with buckshot. The FBI immediatley thought they needed a bigger caliber and went to 10MM then to the 40cal. The problem was they were outgunned, in the wrong mindset, and placed poor shots, and many others. One shot underpenetrated because it went through Platts arm 1st, then right lung and stopped 1inch shy of heart. Read up on this it is very interesting, I recommend the book. it teaches you a lot about what people can take. I rather have a Delta Elite in 10MM then a 40cal. I still will trust my life to the 9mm ANYDAY. Sorry I rambled.:)

Uh oh... What happened?

It was terrible they all went down with the boat:eek::D

aarond, not to pick on your haiku...

... but my girl's guns are a .357 and a 12ga....

So, the 9mm not being a girlie-gun might mean something different, depending on the girlie.

P.08, P.38, and a Bolo Mauser C96 aren't thought of as good street/duty guns today.
Says who? I could acquit myself fairly well with either. Might not be my first choice, but hey.

I honestly think most of the dislike for 9mm stems from contempt prior to investigation. I hear it at the counter all day long: "I need a gun for self defense. I don't know anything about them, and I've never shot one, but I don't want a 9mm because it doesn't have stopping power." Yeesh.

Is it the most barnburning, lethal thing out there? No. But, short of the big-bore Magnum loadings, neither is anything else out a handgun. In the balance of things, the 9mm has works just fine as a service cartridge, and I've little doubt of my ability to defend myself with it.

If I hated the 9mm, I'd be missing out on some of the best handgun designs ever made: the Hi-Power, the Sig P210, the H&K P7, the Beretta 92, and yes, the C96. As Aaron so eloquently pointed out in his Haiku (!!!), shot placement is everything, and not just for the 9mm. Allow me to indulge my own poetic streak:

9 millimeter
if you're competent, it works
if not, tough noogies

For years I hated the 9mm and the story behind it is an old saw around here in several of my posts. Then .40 S&W got hard to find and expensive where I was living. A friend pushed me, damn near literally, to fire his SigPro 2022 9mm. I fired another friend's M&P 9mm full sized many, many times over a long shoot weekend. I saw the light!

Shot placement is the key to getting the bad guy to stop doing what he's doing. I'm pretty damn accurate with my Ruger GP100 .357 and was pretty good with my Glock 23 for getting a good group at six and center on a Q target. With time to get the shots there.

I can fill a ragged hole with my S&W M&P 9C all day long, it never fails to go BANG! and I can feed it good quality 9mm rounds, normally three rounds for the money I'd have spent on one round of .40SS&W. So!

9mm for me!

i think the 9MM is a very fun cartridge to shoot, and if you get some +P JHP rounds, it has decent enough stopping power, especially if you're using it for a back up

the 40 caliber cartridge is completely useless to me

i just feel like it's got more recoil than a 9MM for absolutely no reason, if i'm going to have something that's got a kick to it, i might as well buy a 45 since you pretty much KNOW you're going to stop someone if you hit them

9mm, whats not to like :)

I think it is silly to condemn the 9mm or any other caliber, they all have their place.

I'm not in the military any more, I'm not a cop any more, I am a sports shooter, (yeah I carry CC, but that's with a little 642 pocket revolver).

I haven't shot a 9mm much until I retired. I shoot it a heck of a lot now. There is a local club where I shoot, and about every other week. Action type, such as Steel Matches, USPSA, Run'N Gun, etc etc. Most of these matches is about speed. So I went with a Beretta 92 w/18 rounds magazines. I love my 1911s but they cannot compete with the Beretta (7 rounds vs 18 rounds). Not to mention the 9mm is cheaper to shoot then the 45, casting bullets, 230 grns vs 125 grns. Less powder, etc.

Of course if one shoots Cowboy Action, I doubt he would have much use for the 9mm. Same with Trap shooters not using an '06.

Though you may not like and use the 9mm, many do, it may not be the best for this and that, but some places its better. Next we can say the 223 is useless because we hunt, yet if you are into NRA High Power it beats the heck out of a 338 Win Mag.

I have a few 9mm, but they don't get shot near enough. Most my range time goes to the .45 and .38 spl. The .40 is the one I have no guns or needs for.

I guess I'm getting old, trex, because I just don't see a point in any new rounds, such as 357 Sig or 40 S&W.

I dislike the 357 Sig because it is a necked cartridge and I'm a reloader. It's a pain. 40 S&W is a good idea, if 45 ACP weren't already out. As for compactness, I feel the 45 GAP is a better cartridge.

9mm, I DO like, because it is cheaper to practice with than 45 AND adequate for self defense. But given my 'druthers, I'll take a 45. ;)

Simply put, I felt my collection was lacking without a nice full framed, hi-cap 9 in it. So I went out a couple years back and got a Taurus 24/7 Pro. Love shooting it, and a 9mm with a 17 round mag is perfect for HD also.

9MM is an awesome catridge. Has many great firing platforms that can have flush fitting 20 round mags +1. The 9MM is a good defensive catridge and has more than adequate capability, that is if you do. If you can't handle something with 21 rounds of 9mm...RUN!!!

I view the 9mm as a good round for plinking, training, and self defense it is a very adequate round for the job. There are many good brands of self defense ammunition out there for it such as gold dot which is an excellent choice. People always say it dose not have good stopping power and it over penetrates but this can be solved by a good hollow point round.

9mm Dislike
I don't wish to start a "hate" thread. I've been shooting for more than
50 years and own many guns. I don't own a 9mm anything. I just have
never liked it and feel that there are better options. I don't have any
hard feelings for people that do like it. Are there cartridges that just
don't appeal to you?

I have always liked the 9mm for some reason. I think
it has to do with it's cost :D Thats why I like the .22lr
too :D
