9mm Dislike

i like the 9mm but i love the 45. i am down to 4 9mm's and five 45's after givng my sons a few of each. i try to keep my calibers to as few and as popular as you can find. 38/357's, 44 mag, 45 lc, 380's, 9mm's and 45's. of course the rimfires, 22 and 22 mags.

I own several 9mm pistols as well as other calibers. Considering that it is about 109 years old there are a lot of people that like it.

Thirty years ago I never cared for the 9mm either but the round has advanced in such a manor that today I like it.... 9mm pistols come in a variety of platforms that are very accurate, 9mm ammo is cheap to shoot, readily available and as far as a SD round, with the right ammo, would never feel undergunned.
Whats not to like?

Now the .25 or .32acp, well thats another subject.

I have one 9mm - a Ruger SR9 - one of my first cartridge handguns - I only started shooting the "modern cartridges" a couple of years ago - always shot BP for 50 some years. I like the way the SR9 shoots but can't say that I'm totally sold on 9mm. I have several 38spls and a couple of 357s but I prefer the 38 spl - just me. I've shot a number of 9mm semiautos - they're O.K. but I'm more of a traditionlist and still like my vintage 38 spl wheelguns the best. As far as target shooting, which is what I do most - I probably have the most fun with my 22s - when I'm not shooting BP that is.

I agree, the hate the spews from the internet is almost enough for me to stop going to some sites.

This site is still pretty tame compared to a few I frequent.

Sure - there are calibers I have no interest in ....for fun, for carry, for competition, etc ....

I don't have any use for .380 or the 10mm..... or .357 sig ...or a lot of other calibers....

Everybody should own guns chambered in whatever they want / shoot what they want....

But as an example ...
1911's are great guns / and my primary carry gun is a 5" gun in .45 acp ...so I also have 5" 1911's in 9mm ...that I practice with a lot. The 9mm is cheap to reload ...and fun to shoot at the range. I may shoot 8 - 10 boxes of 9mm at the range when I'm working on a problem / and then 3 or 4 boxes of .45 acp...

same thing in revolvers...
I like S&W revolvers ...so I have 4" guns in .22 / .357 mag ...and I can use the same holster ....and shoot the .22 grooving my move in or out of a holster, speed loading, etc ....then go to a 4" gun and shoot .38's thru it ...then shoot it a little with .357 mag ...

same thing on semi-autos like a Sig ....
a lot of guys have the same guns in 9mm and .40S&W ...shoot the 9mm a lot at the range ...shoot the .40S&W a little ...

I already reload 6 calibers .... 9mm, .40S&W, .45 acp / .38spl, .357 mag and .44 mag ...and to me / those calibers give me enough variety and performance to do whatever I want for practice, fun, etc....

As far as "handguns" go, Ive probably got more .45acp's downrange than anything else, although 9mm is catching up pretty quick these days (and actually may well have surpassed it).

Having owned a few 9mm SMG's over the last 30 years or so, and having access to a bunch more, 9mm is by far the winner in the numbers count. That count is probably more than many people have ever seen, let alone shot. :)

I quit using .45 in my carry guns about 10 years or so ago. Havent had any desire to go back either. I actually sold off most of my .45s, although I have kept, and still shoot a few. Had a brief fling with 357SIG, and after awhile, realized it really was nothing more than +P+ 9mm, so now its 9mm riding in holsters for the most part these days.

With ammo advances, the gaps have narrowed for the most part with the major players. Take that out of the equation, add double or more the ammo capacity, in a gun thats usually smaller, and usually a lot easier to shoot faster without loss of accuracy with, whats not to like?

I think the "dislike" part is really the types of guns the 9mm is chambered for rather than the cartridge itself. I woudl suggest you try a browning Hi Power or a CZ75 and then decide if you "like" 9mms.

Most other 9mms including glocks are not to my liking either. I am not a particular fan of a Beretta m9. I think that 40 cal is overall a better cartridge for defense, but 9mm is a great range round if you have an accurate 9mm.

I absolutely LOVE 9mm.

A 9mm Browning Hi Power is a work of art and the bullet just sings when it's fired through one.

To me the .38 spl is just a practice round. I wouldn't own a 38, but I'd fire them through a .357 Magnum for practice.

The nine can be made in almost any form factor - from a tiny Rohrbaugh pocket pistol to the big Glock 17L. So that covers almost everything from ccw, duty firearm / SD, target shooting.

For camping or a hunting sidearm / being in the wilderness, I think the 10mm in a big auto like the EAA Witness Hunter or something similar can be used for SD - everything from nefarious two legged predators to grizzlies (guy got killed by a grizzly in Yellowstone yesterday...). And the 10mm can be used effectively to hunt hogs, deer, - whatever...

Between the 9mm and the 10mm I think all my handgun needs are met.

I don't really have a need for 357 SIG. I don't see the point of carrying 380 auto when a Rohrbaugh or Kahr in 9mm is almost the same form factor.

All the other handgun calibers 380 and below - I have no use for.

Here is how I look at it. The 9mm is probably a better defensive round than the .38 Special, which has been used as such for around a 100 years, so the 9mm can get it done. There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of models and variations of models of interesting semi-auto gun designs, mostly in 9mm. As far as variety, nothing does it better than the 9mm.

I have owned a bunch of 9mms through the years, and until I started handloading owned several. At the present I am down to one (Kahr PM9) that I will probably own forever.

It took a while, but I found that I shoot a 1911 better than I shoot anything else...so that is what I carry. I also trust the .45 acp more than most other rounds, and the fact that most 1911s are chambered in .45 acp is just a happy coincidence for me.

FWIW, I have previously or do currently own 1911s in at least three other calibers, which has given me the opportunity to experiment.

If I wanted to make a list of the rounds I have no use for, .40 would be near the top of that list. I've owned half a dozen of them, own none currently and have no plans to own another. I do, however, own a 10mm, and hold that round in high regard.

The 9mm has proven itself as the optimun (sic) round for ccw.
Really? Do tell. ;)

I did tell

I haven't seen anyone get a .40, 45 ACP or .357 magnum in a package as small as the Kahr PM9, Rohrbaugh or Diamondback, (that feeds reliably and can be handled by the people who make up the biggest section of the bell curve), and the 9 is more effective than 380 auto or smaller.

For those people who tuck a 40 cal or a 45 in their waistband and don't print... well good for them.

I have a feeling that this is the place someone starts talking about the such-n-such Derringer chambered for 410, 45 or 10mm or whatever...

So I beat you to it...

There are no logical arguments against 9mm. You'll often times hear people spout off ballistics jargon, but that's about it. For some reason, caliber is the only variable people consider in a shooting. Ask an statistician, you can't just ignore variables and focus on one if you plan on drawing conclusions from that data.

I love 9mm. So much so that I fire it pretty much exclusively, when I shoot semis -- my 1911 is languishing and may go up for sale one of these days, soon.

Why do I love this round? Well, it is plenty powerful -- being the #1 military and police handgun cartridge in the world. It's cheap, and it functions beautifully in the right gun. My preferred 9 is a CZ 75B SA. That gun never ceases to amaze me with its performance and accuracy.

So, yes, I'm a 9mm fanboy.

Btw, I'm also primarily a revolver guy. 90% of my shooting is done with revolvers and nearly all of that is done with calibers that are more powerful than 9mm, beginning with .357 and heading up the ladder from there. So no, I don't like 9mm because I'm a wimp. It just that it mates up so perfectly with my CZ.

Nothing wrong w/ the 9mm. The CZ I like came chambered in it.
There are other cartridges more worthy of my scorn.
.45 GAP jumps to mind. Sorry, but I just never saw the point of the .357 Sig either. (Flame suit on). I'm sure that the various .32 Magnum variants are lovely, but I just don't see a need for them.
