I don't wish to start a "hate" thread. I've been shooting for more than
50 years and own many guns. I don't own a 9mm anything. I just have
never liked it and feel that there are better options. I don't have any
hard feelings for people that do like it. Are there cartridges that just
don't appeal to you?

I don't not like the 9MM, I've had a couple but for a defense round there's better options. Now the .40 is a round that sparks no interest in me.

I've never been a fan, but ownership of 9mm's kinda sneaks up on you.Until you take stock and you have everything from a Luger,to a Star,to a S&W,to a Browning HP,to a Beretta.I love .45's,was in the Army when we transitioned from 1911's to the M9,my daily carry is a S&W 4553.I love .45LC and carry a Redhawk when in the woods.I don't fault anyone in their choices,whatever you're comfortable with go for it.

I have one 9mm and it is in a Glock...I don't really care for the caliber or the gun. But, this is just my opinion and others may differ.

I don't guess I "dislike" any handgun calibers. I do like the 9mm very much. I don't have much interest in handguns with more gittyup than a .44 magnum, and would prefer not to use anything smaller than a 380 for personal defense. Of all the handguns on my wish list nothing in .40 is listed, so I guess that would be my least favorite.:D

Nothing really wrong with it, IMHO. For as much as one can hate on it, one can find reasons to like it, I think. While I'm not the biggest fan of any caliber, I don't really dislike any of them. If you do your job, they'll most likely do theirs.

That said, i do carry a 9mm on duty daily. I am considering going back to a .45, but not for lack of stopping power or anything. I finally found a 14+1 45 that I like, lol. So, going from a 16+1 9mm to a 14+1, I'm not giving up much capacity, although gaining quite a bit of weight, lol.

I never liked the 9 either-that is until the big ammo crash of the New Millenium. Now I have three. Same thing for the .223 and the .308 as far as that goes. My big question is, "When he heck is somebody going to put the little .17's in an auto?"

It's not that I dislike them, but I don't buy anything chambered for a round I can't find a my local sporting goods store or Walmart. All my pistols are .22 mag, .380 ACP, 38 Spl, 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP.

Thats just my personal habit.

Yes, the same thing kind of happened to me. I have really been a .45 fan for a long time, but over the years picked up a Beretta 92FS, S&W 5903 and SIG P229. After shooting the SIG and reviewing some ammo information I may start carrying the SIG 9mm instead of my .45, but not yet 100% sure.

A Haiku for the 9mm cartridge

My attempt at Haiku,,,
For a very capable cartridge.

9 millimeter
A girly gun it is not
Shot placement is king

My personal pros and cons to the 9mm ...

Pros
* I'm most accurate with my 9mm's
* Availability of the NATO cartridge is worldwide
* Cost is reasonable

Cons
* Not as many 1911 variations as I would like to see in 9mm
* Questionable effectiveness for self defense.

I think most of the people who dislike 9mm do so for no real reason other than "it isn't 45". Therefore, any argument stemming from that postulate is bound to be nonsensical.

I have owned one 9mm. I liked it. Traded to my pops for a 40. I like that even more. I have no use for a .44 or a .45. I feel my .40 can handle any problem I will run across. This doesn't mean I'll never own a 44 or 45. I just feel my 40 does what I need it to do. There's no need to have 10 different caliber guns right now. When I can start collecting and reloading then the sky is the limit.

My two favorite pistol calibers are 9x19 and .45acp. The 9mm because is so cheap and plentiful. $189 per 1000 rounds delivered to my door is hard to beat. The .45.…. Well, just because. I do reload for the .45 but don’t even bother reloading for the 9mm at those prices. I don’t subscribe to those that say the 9mm is under powered. A double tap to the chest will at least make any bad guy stop and think, and I’m sure more times then not put him down for good.

The 9mm has proven itself as the optimun round for ccw. It can be fired from a 5.5 x 5.5" footprint.

If downsize, in semi-auto you have the .380 auto which is not as effective a round. If you go up in caliber you have the .40 or .45. When a gun maker trys to make a semi-auto in a 5.5" x 5.5" footprint with a .40 or .45 there are some significant design challenges. Part of it involves a lack of mass in the slide, a greater reliance on springs, and a shorter window in which to eject and load a round. If a gun maker does get a small 5.5 x 5.5 pistol to feed reliably with 40/45, there still is the problem of someone trying to control a pistol like that - firing a .40 or .45 ACP. With a normal sized pistol - or maybe "duty" sized, someone with large hands is going to be able to control the recoil better than someone with smaller hands.

With a really small pistol - like a pistol that's only 5 ½" long - those big hands aren't going to be such an advantage because there is nothing to hold on to.

So anyway, I think the 9mm lends itself better to effective pocket pistols than either the 45 or .40 S&W

I must say I love the 9mm, since it is fairly cheap for practice and decently powerful, even though I own only 2, one of which is a safe queen. My favorite is .45 ACP with 10mm running a close second. I doubt I'll ever own a .40 S&W, as it doesn't appeal to me at all. But, like I always said, if .40 ever drops in price like 9mm did, I'll buy a pallet of ammo and then go shopping for a couple pistols to shoot it with.
