Currently I have a 9mm Sig Sauer P320 Compact. I am looking for another handgun, perhaps the same type as I have now but probably in another caliber. I am looking for suggestions to the other calibers relative to my current 9mm. Things I am mainly looking at are cost and anything significant in performance that may set a caliber apart from the others. Thank you.

The nice thing about the P320 is, you don't have to buy a whole new gun. I just ordered an X-Change kit to turn my 9 mm carry, into a full size .357 sig.

.357 Sig is a great round. Very powerful with great penetration.

1st choice would be .45 for the same reason CZ9Joe pointed out.
2nd choice would be 9mm - always nice to have another 9mm
3rd choice would be .40 - ammo was available even when you couldn't find the other cartridges.
I would not be interested in the .357 Sig. Ammo can be hard to find and is expensive.

Like I said on the other forum my fav is the 9....easier on lead, powder, and cheap brass.

I also love 45, but if you don't reload it's pretty expensive to plink with.

If you do reload a 10mm is also a great option.

Looking at this myself but will be awhile before I have funds to jump. Really leaning towards .45. .357 sig has a rep for over penetration and .40 has a rep for more snappy than 9 with little performance advantage. If I wanted more snap and more performance I agree 10mm would be a good choice but that would pretty much involve taking up reloading too.

9mm and .45 are my favorites to shoot. Everything else just makes me wish I was shooting one of my 9's and .45's.

It is downright unAmerican not to consider owning at least one pistol chambered for each extant semiauto handgun round JM Browning designed: .25 Auto, .32 Auto, .380 Auto, .38 Super(?), and .45 Auto.

Depends what you want it for. Unless you just want something different to play with, 9mm makes the most sense.

If your 320 is your carry gun, a duplicate carry gun does as well.

I wouldnt get to hung up on caliber. These days, most of the accepted SD rounds all perform to the same standards, so you might as well get the one thats the cheapest, allowing you to practice more, has the softest recoil impulse, allowing faster follow ups, and holds the most in the mag.

Originally, 357sig was believed to over penetrate. But after many real world shootings, it's simply not the case. A fantastic round.

There are a few of us here that own real magnums. Your wining about cost just shows that you are not serious. My .44 Auto Mag is just as inexpensive as a 10 mm. but then I have been making my own brass for more then 25 years and 1000 pieces made is probably enough pieces of brass for the rest of my life.

I'm actually in your exact shoes. I have an XD mod 2 in 9mm, and I'm looking at getting an HK next (shot the vp9 the other day and loved it). I'm sticking to 9mm for a little bit. After I get a few 9mms I'll get a 357 revolver. Gotta have one of those, and eventually a .45 1911 of some sort.

And on the subject of 10mm--I saw a Rock Island Armory 10 the other day a la 1911 style at around $550--I've never seen anything like it at that price point. VERY well done right out of the box.

Here's another vote for "one of each".

I like redundancy, but I also like options. During the recent ammo panic, .40 seemed to always be there, and .45 returned long before 9mm.

Something to think about.

If you only buy your ammo "by the box", and dont reload, you'll always be subject to the whims of those who panic.

I dont disagree with "one of each", and I think its a good idea, after you have your priorities taken care of.

If you fall for the myth of handgun stopping power, .45 ACP will win the day.

But it's just that... a myth. A fantasy.

With today's bullet technology, there is basically NO difference in effectiveness vs a quality 9mm JHP and the same in .45 ACP. What the .45 ACP WILL give you is increased cost, recoil, weight, and size of the firearm it's chambered in.

9mm gives you faster follow up shots, is dirt cheap (comparatively speaking) to shoot, can be chambered in amazingly small and lightweight guns, give you more ammunition in the same size and weight guns, and is EVERY BIT as effective as ANY .45 ACP load out there.

9mm for the win, and it's obvious from the poll results many others feel the same way.
