50 yard shot, your 'go-to' handgun?

  1. Ruger Blackhawk .30 Carbine
  2. For something a little more carriable, Taurus Gaucho .357 (it has hard-to-see fixed sights, but is amazingly accurate with 158 grain bullets)

While it's tough for me to even see a target at 50 yds these days, it would be my first generation Kimber Gold Match for sure. Second choice would be my Dan Wesson Pointman (still breaking this one in)...

My carry gun, a colt 1991A1 compact (it does have a clark bushing)..

Hitting an 8 inch plate at 60 yards is not very hard.

I used to shoot a lot of bullseye.

50 yards? My preference would be a rifle, if it had to be a handgun, I'd give my Springfield TRP 1911 a go. I'm not sure my LCP or snubnose are up to the challenge.

I speak from the " Old days " when LE actually qualified at 50 . My go to would be either my shotty or my rifle . If we are talking true handgun then i would have to say of what i currently have it would be my S&W mod 10 closely followed by both my 1911 and my hk p7. Oh the reason for my choices , well they all offer a great single action trigger which helps me in the 50+ yard situations . BTW for carry i do a kahr lol .

I regularly shoot 50 yards with my Mauser 1896 M-30 in 7.63x25. It's pretty much a 2 inch gun at that range. It would be rather hard to conceal, so if concealability was an issue, I'd probably go with the Cz-52, but I would want better sights than are on it now.

I'm not that great a handgun shot so I'd hesitate to shoot at 50 yards. That said, since you also specified "go to" handgun, natural extension and all that, I'd have to say my 1911 without a doubt. I killed a running whitetail crossing at about 10 yards with two hits this past fall with it. I really mostly made sure I had good body alignment, it all happened too fast to actually get any sight alignment. So that covers the natural extension part of your question, anyway.

If it had to be a "carry type" gun, then I'd go with my CZ97B or Kimber Gold Match (series 1) as either point the best of my carry guns. If allowed something more suited for long range, then I'd go to my S&W 686 Performance Center Hunter (357 Mag), 44 mag, Super Blackhawk (MagNaPort custom) or Super Blackhawk Hunter w/ 2-6 scope. The 357 Max Blackhawk would also get consideration. All the Rugers are 7 1/2" barrels.

Of the ones I've shot a bit at 50 yards: Colt WWI Repro, '99 Kimber Gold Match and a 6" Python. I have hopes for my new '67 4" Python, but I need to shoot it some more to be sure.

The narrow front sight on the Colt Repro really works for me.

Cops had to qualify at 50 yards? What were the conditions of the qualification?

We shot the PPC (Police Pistol Combat) Course for qualification. It requried a stage at 50 yards. They still shoot it in PPC matches today.

Its actually a good training course. I use to do qualification classes for armed security businesses. I found they got more out of the class then they do out of the so called combat couses they have now. They had to know how to shoot to shoot PPC.

Fifty Yards

Its fifty yards guys not fifty miles One Hundred and fifty feet. It aint so far! I love long range shooting shooting with a Hand Gun. My sig 229 in 357 sig shoots like a little rifle.

Would this 50 yard shot be at a target just for practice or for self defense purposes? You did say it was with a carry gun. I would imagine trying to explain a 50 yard "self defense" shot to a judge/jury would prove quite difficult.

No one is saying 50 yard shooting is for self defence situations. I did say shooting at fifty yards would help you in a SD situartion simply because it forces one to concentrate on your fundlementals which will help in any shooting you do.
