I have shot at 50 yards with pistol and consistently hit the target with decent accuracy. Pistol and revolvers I have shot at that distance include: Colt Border Patrol, S&W Models 19, 60 (snubnose) 66 (both 2.5 and 4" barrels), 459, 6906, Glock 19, Beretta 92SB and 92F, and SIG 229. I shot for qualification with all those pistols, except the SIG, at 50 yards from a seated and or kneeling position. I usually scored well enough to score at least expert, fairly often as a distinguished expert. I also did almost as well while shooting at 50 yards from a standing unsupported position. I see no problems with shooting any of those firearms, or ones of similar design and quality, at distances of 50 yards. If I had to do so, I would use any of the above mentioned guns at 50 yards in a do or die situation.
In fact, I have shot a S&W model 60 snubnose out to 90 yards with decent accuracy. Although shooting with a snub-nosed revolver at that distance was somewhat difficult, and took some practice, it was possible to hit a steel, torso sized, target 5 out of 5 times though I would more likely hit 4 out of 5 and less often sometimes hit as few as 3 out of 5. A pistol with a 4" barrel improved things markedly at that distance. At 50 yards though, with the snubnose, everything stayed on target and when shooting at paper all shots were well within the scoring area.
While many shooters might not do as well at 90 yards, I think most fairly capable shooters (about probably 60 to 70%), would be able to accomplish all shots on target, with some little bit of proper training and a lot of practice, at 50 yards with a pistol with a 4 inch barrel if not a 2 inch barrel. It really is not all that difficult for someone who is already a decent shot at 25 yards.
All the best,
