50 yard shot, your 'go-to' handgun?

50 yards! Yikes...go for the rifle of course, or, better still...Call for Fire...danger close. Turn around...seek cover.

My custom G20L. I regularly practice with it on our 200yd steel plates.

I have to say one thing. There's a lot better shots on Internet Gun Boards than any Range I've ever been to. Kind reminds me of fishermen. :)

I thought he said 3?

Well...in order of that long of accuracy?

S&W Model 19 .357 for that long accuracy, I'm talking apple on top of someones head.

I'm equally accurate with these though,

S.A. 1911

Glock 22

Browning Hi-Power

XD-45

My least accurate gun w/o pink extension is the G27

I have shot at 50 yards with pistol and consistently hit the target with decent accuracy. Pistol and revolvers I have shot at that distance include: Colt Border Patrol, S&W Models 19, 60 (snubnose) 66 (both 2.5 and 4" barrels), 459, 6906, Glock 19, Beretta 92SB and 92F, and SIG 229. I shot for qualification with all those pistols, except the SIG, at 50 yards from a seated and or kneeling position. I usually scored well enough to score at least expert, fairly often as a distinguished expert. I also did almost as well while shooting at 50 yards from a standing unsupported position. I see no problems with shooting any of those firearms, or ones of similar design and quality, at distances of 50 yards. If I had to do so, I would use any of the above mentioned guns at 50 yards in a do or die situation.

In fact, I have shot a S&W model 60 snubnose out to 90 yards with decent accuracy. Although shooting with a snub-nosed revolver at that distance was somewhat difficult, and took some practice, it was possible to hit a steel, torso sized, target 5 out of 5 times though I would more likely hit 4 out of 5 and less often sometimes hit as few as 3 out of 5. A pistol with a 4" barrel improved things markedly at that distance. At 50 yards though, with the snubnose, everything stayed on target and when shooting at paper all shots were well within the scoring area.

While many shooters might not do as well at 90 yards, I think most fairly capable shooters (about probably 60 to 70%), would be able to accomplish all shots on target, with some little bit of proper training and a lot of practice, at 50 yards with a pistol with a 4 inch barrel if not a 2 inch barrel. It really is not all that difficult for someone who is already a decent shot at 25 yards.

All the best,

If I just had to make a 50 yard shot with a handgun (that I actually own), it would be my S&W 686.

But honestly, I figure that the way to make a 50 yard shot is with a rifle.

Use. The. Proper. Tools.

I agree with using the proper tools, so too did the the United States Border Patrol agree when they taught me how to shoot at 50 yards with a revolver. They also taught me to shoot at that distance and further with a rifle and a shotgun. All 3 can be the proper tools with which to shoot at 50 yards but that means you also need to be trained to be proficient with those tools at that distance. Use of tools, even if the proper ones, but a person who is not proficient in their use will lead to a good result now and then only due to luck and to a poor result with a good deal of reliability. It will also often lead to the user blaming the tool(s) when it goes wrong.

All the best,
Glenn B

smince you make a good point.

that being said if I did have the choice I am definately going to the rifle in this case. If someone else chooses to use a handgun then that is their business and I respect that. I have a much better chance at near perfect shot placement with my rifle.
