5-shot .44Spl in a Ruger GP frame.

Would it fit?
Has this ever been done?
Has been requested?
Would it even sell?
If not, why do you not think so?

In many ways, it seems that the .44Spl is oft over-looked, either for the .44Mag, the .45Colt in one direction, .45ACP and .375Mag in the other and yet is a really capable round, much in the same way that .480 Ruger has fallen somewhat into obscurity in the big-bore league, through no fault of its own.

I certainly have a soft-spot of the Spl and do often shoot it in my Redhawk. So on the one hand, I think to myself "would it be cool to fit the .44Spl into a smaller gun in the Ruger range such as a 5-shot in the GP.

I don't actually know if it would fit in the cylinder, and I don't know if it would be popular (why get a chunky gun like a GP and then limit yourself to 5 shots? Who shoots .44Spl these days?!), but I find the idea intriguing.

I don't recall it being suggested before, but it may have been...

So, should I use the vast influence I hold from my modest Estonian abode to sway Ruger & Sturm's marketing plan for the next few years?

It is available as an expensive custom conversion by Dave Clements in Virginia, USA.

"GP 100 .44 Special- I will once again offer this conversion on adjustable and fixed sight guns. Standard features include 5 shot recessed casehead cyl. - unfluted, rebored factory barrel, new front sight blade, and action tune. $1250
Standard finish on stainless guns is beadblast or satin brushed. Blue guns will be matte or blued with a factory equivalent polish.
I have done several in the past. Guns will be able to shoot a 250 gr. bullet @ 1200 fps."

He also does conversions to 10mm and .41 Special. Those are less expensive because he rechambers the factory six shot cylinder.

$1250?! Ahhh, what the heck....

Who needs both kidneys and do I really need two liver lobes anyway?
:D

What about Ruger and Co. Would they?

Yep... The S&W 69 is here now... I've had mine over a year now and like it a lot.
So I say just get one until your elusive dream Ruger maybe might sorta perhaps come out some decade... or not.

medium frame .44 spl

I've always thought a med frame .44 spl, say 3" -4" tube with adjustable sights would be an interesting pistol myself. The Taurus version is about as close as we've come, the Charter Bulldog being too small (to hold up to much shooting) and the L-frame Smith of a decade or so ago, to big (as in "and heavy").

Years ago I read an article about a custom maker turning out 5 shot .44 spls. on the old Ruger Six series frames.

My Smith 696 is no different than carrying a 3" 357 Magnum, just one less shot. The companion Taurus 441 is about the same. What is "too heavy"?

I'm normally a Smith guy but I do have a GP100. I wouldn't mind a GP100 in 44spl. Granted I could just get a Smith 69 but I hate those stupid lock holes.

Personally, I don't see the need. A GP100 is a fairly big gun. If you're going to have that much size/weight, why not go just a tad bigger and have a 6 shot 44 mag like a Redhawk(not Super)?

With a 44 spl I don't need more than 200gr HP silver tip or gold dot driven at normal speed for self defense .
My old 1st generation CA is still carried and works fine . It just a little larger , and when loaded . About same weight my S&W 36 and just easy to carry.

I like the big bullet moderate speed of a 44 spl. Same reason I like the 45 auto . Both will work
