.460 vs .500

There are many variables but sectional density is one of the most important. As are bullet shape, bullet construction and impact velocity as it pertains to the bullet's structural integrity.

Yes, SD is important but keep in mind that it is not the only thing in the equation.

No, I did not shoot either deer (460 or 30 carbine). However, I ate both of them.

You see, the deer was shot with my gun and ammo.

Feets,

I'm not saying the 460 isn't a badarse gun/cartridge combo, but if it were mine I would be using a heavier bullet. Thats all, to each his own. I'm glad your happy with it. I do believe I would choose the 460 over the 500 due to bullet and case selection. Tell me, how does the forcing cone stand those 200's and the needed powder charge to reach those incredible muzzel velocities?

IMO, time will tell, and Smith & Wesson will get to warranty the revolver if there's a problem. But their new sleeved barrel system makes the "fix" quicker and easier than a S&W barrel swap in years past.

Who can find that much powder lol
Seriously I can't imagine anyone shooting one of these monsters enough to erode it that much

Mine was a wee bit different.

I had an Encore. There was no forcing cone or cylinder gap. There wasn't even a cylinder for that matter. Just a chamber, throat, and rifling.

I did push some 335 wlfn at 2030 fps. The recoil was punishing despite the muzzle brake. The factory fodder was controllable after the brake but literally damaged my wrist without it.

I tried a variety of stuff in that thing.

In the end, I found myself looking for a cast load somewhere between heavy Colt and Casull levels. This lead to, well, lead. Lots and lots of lead.

Finding that a bit silly with that kind of cartridge I sold the barrel.

Like a Dan Wesson?
Well, like half a Dan Wesson. Not something that a casual X-frame owner can screw/unscrew as he wishes. Not swappable like the Dan Wesson revolvers. However, it's not one big hunk 'o steel like most S&W revolvers we've known over the last hundred years. It's a rifled tube that is attached at both ends, running inside the larger sleeve.

It's been said that the Dan Wesson barrel, and the fact that it's attached rigidly at each end is where the fine accuracy of those revolvers comes from. the big X-frames also have a reputation for accuracy.

And S&W is now adding some new revolvers to their line-up that also use this new (to them) and different method for a barrel.

I also have heard that a tensioned barrel is good for accuracy, I have a pretty big bullet collection and the 460 and 500 are two of the most impressive rounds in the lot. A Ruger #3 would be pretty sweet in either of these rounds.;)

Y'know, I disagree. When I shoot the .500 S&W Mag from an X-frame, I find it exhilarating. When I shot it through a T/C Encore (rifle), I found it awful and un-enjoyable. This same frame runs a .300 Win Mag in a very nice fashion. With the .500, it was nasty.

Hard kicking long guns do transfer there venom to your self more than handguns do. I had a 444 Marlin shooting a 300gr Barnes at 2200fps and the worst thing about it was the smack the stock gave my cheek bone. I do know of a doctor who had a 375JDJ T/C that suffered fractured bones in his wrist after a range session.

3 rnds at 100yds from my 460xvr. Lower hole was my fault.

I dont know if your still on the fence or not. IMO- a 500 is great in a short barrel side arm for bear defense and close distance using irons or red dot. It lobs a heavy big bullet very well.
The 460 is a frigging laser beam. And the load it carries is nothing to shrug off. I am powering a 300gr HP somewhere around 2000fps from a revolver. Its virtually flat out to 150yds. It will drop anything in NA 1-shot drt. Im only good to 100yds at this point, but I have heard of many people being quite adept with it out to 300yds
Tremendous fun to shoot also. Wear double ear protection.

Yeah they do. People get a "kick" (ha! pun intended) out of my hatred for long gun recoil compared to my affection for uber-magnum handguns. I hate shooting rifles with more recoil than a .243, but I have an Encore Pro Hunter handgun in 7mm-08 and just order a .460XVR with the 14" barrel.:D
