EAA Witness 10mm for me. I wanted something that could do double duty for both SD and hunting. 45 ACP isn't a legal hunting round here, only 357,44,41,10mm or 45winmag. I already have a 44 wheel gun and wanted a reasonably priced semi so 10mm was the way to go.

DAVID NANCARROW,

Maybe we should go to a 22RF, which has probably killed more than the not so mighty 9, 10, 44 or 45:rolleyes:

First, I doubt .22 has killed more people than 9mm. Yeah, it kills a lot of folks in crimes every year, but the combined tally of victims since 1908 of the (Luger/P-38/MP-40/Sten/High Power/Sterling/MP-5/Uzi/etc/etc) is probably more folks than have got killed by stickup artists with .22's.

Second it was a joke. I always get a giggle out of those who say "If you pick any caliber other than my precious .45, you're gambling with your life, because my .45 has history and a battle record". Well, not compared to 9mm, it don't. There are plenty of reasons to pick .45ACP as a CCW cartridge (fer heaven's sake, there's a Kimber on my hip as I type this), but it being some mythical king of the battlefield bodycount ain't one of them.

The 10MM is a very good cartridge; however, its utility as a self defense selection is bested by other cartridges that are more conducive to such application. Firstly, sometime ago the "FBI LE Bulletin" published research findings that revealed the .40 caliber to be at its best for self defense use with 180 grain bullets combined with a muzzle velocity of around 980 FPS. Ergo, the introduction of the more efficient .40 S&W. In accordance with this principle, many 10MM offerings are now loaded to a greatly reduced velocity. Secondly, while this may foment the debate a tinge, the .45 ACP has been proven to be a better self defense cartridge than the .40 S&W and 10MM. With that written, a few years ago I talked to a cop who used a S&W in 10MM caliber in self defense, and he said the results were very positive.

At the risk of taking heat, the 9MM with any projectile is not even remotely in the same category as the .45 ACP. In fact, and most assuredly due to its pisspoor results, the 9MM is all but buried as a LE option. It seems like once a week I hear of another So Cal department going to either the .40 S&W or the .45 ACP, with the popularity nod going to the latter.

Running for cover,
Elvis

Tamara,
I was kidding myself about going to the .22, and while I have absolutely no data to support it, the 22 has been around a whole lot longer than any centerfire cartridge, and I wouldn't even hazzard a guess on how many people fell to the little guy, accidentally or on purpose.
It too, makes me laugh when I hear about this cartridge or that being the better choice. I have worked with the 45 since I was a teenager-the Army saw to that, and have been very satisfied with its performance ever since. Bottom line-if you're going to stake your own life on it, choose wisely and practice until you can hit with it every time.
And whats up with that Kimber?
Doesn't everyone know the Colt is the King???(there's a flame for another thread!)
