For self defense concealed carry, I would have to choose the 45.
Are there any small, concealable 10mm pistols? Sure 10mm is more powerful but is the .45 lacking as a self defense round? If I need something more powerful than that I would reach for a rifle.
There really is no justifiable reason to go to a 10mm self defense handgun over a .45 other than:
1) The I gotta be different mentality (I'm special)
2) The mine's more powerful than yours mentality (I'm compensating)
3) The elitist mentality (I'm a connoisseur)
Or some variation of these.

For self-defense/CC I give the .45ACP the edge because there are guns with a compact platform available for it.

harrydog,

It's such sad evidence of the neopopulist turn the Republican party has taken that the words "elitist" and "connoisseur" are some how seen as bad things.

defox,

More compact guns may be on the market in .45, but 10mm will work in any platform .45 will, size-wise.

Tamara,
I never said, or meant to imply, that a connoisseur or an elitist is a "bad" thing. I am certainly guilty of gravitating to and appreciating the finer things in life, myself.
But I do think that an elitist mentality is a negative thing. I can't stand people with a smug sense of superiority, particularly when it is unjustified, and that is the impression I'm getting from some of the 10mm fans in this thread. Ridiculous, considering the discussion is about what caliber handgun one prefers.

I'll take the 10mm. I have plans to build some type of commander slide/officer frame in 10mm. J.Parker - you should research that Hydra-shok round compared to the loadings by Pro-load, Speer and Black Hills ammo. I use to think the same and now only carry Speer and Ranger SXT loads. Nelson

drnls;
Thanks for the info. I like Speer but I've never tried those Ranger's. I'll have to check 'em out. I've used Pro-Loads 230gr +P HP's also.
I don't get caught up in load selection to much anymore now that we've moved out to the country. When I pack in town or on the road it's a compact 9mm with 124gr+P Golden Sabres.
Around the house or in the woods where I spend alot of time I'll stoke my 45's with hardball and my 357 maggie with softpoint fodder or hardcast stuff. Best, J. Parker

J. Parker - I don't know if muzzle flash matters to you or not, but try this and you might be suprized.
Load a magazine with alternating rounds of Hydra-Shoks and Golden Sabers. There is a huge difference in the amount of muzzle flash. The G.S. has WAY less.
My favorite round in 9mm is also the 124gr +P G.S.
I find it to have very low flash and felt recoil is the same as the other brands standard pressure loads.

Thanks harrydog. That's good info 'cause the Golden Sabres are my house nightime load also. Do you know or are you familiar with the 9mm "personal defense" 135gr Hydra-Shok? Got my first box of these. Just thought I'd try 'em out. Best, John

"Are there any small, concealable 10mm pistols?"

Sure. :)

There's the 10mm G-29 - quite compact and still holds 10+1. (Tamara favors this little powerhouse).

Then there's the all-steel Tanfaglio Witness Compact in 10mm. Also a 10+1 proposition. The sights absolutely suck, though.

More importantly, you might do a Search (if you're really interested that is - it was hard to tell with all the sequential characterizing going on). Posters on TFL like Nrvquit have reported quality-control problems with their Witnesses, as well as encountering unbelievable attitude when they sought "customer service" from the importer, EAA, to get the pistols fixed.

OTOH, some Witness owners have apparently experienced no problems at all, just a smooth-shootin', accurate and inexpensive pistol (and, seemingly, regardless of specific caliber).

I'm told there was at one time a Smith 10mm "1016" model on the drawing board (like the 4516-1 but scaled to 10mm-specs) but it never made it into production.

Hope this helps.

Well, as I suspected the 10mm got trounced as per the poll. But then again that's the way the 10mmite's like it 'cause they're "special".
Come up with a 10mm handgun that makes sense and it might peak my curiosity but until then it will only be "special". :p

Matter of factly, the 10mm being the weak cousin of the 41 magnum, has only one application and that's in the woods. It makes no urban sense when there's so many other appropriate calibres. Hugs/kisses, J. Parker

J. Parker, yes I have tried the 135gr Federal Personal Defense round. I found that it too, had more muzzle flash than I like. It seems to me that all the Federal stuff has more flash than most of the other brands.
In 9mm I like the GS 124gr, reg and +P and I also like the Proloads.

J. Parker,

Actually, I was surprised to see it get as many votes as it did.

But, hey, Ford outsells Ferrari every year, too. ;)

You know what is extremely weird? The market in the last couple of years has some sort of fascination with the 41 magnum. Normally the nod goes to the urban or self-defense calibre, ie why not the 10mm?
The resurrection of the Ruger Blackhawk in 41 magnum and the various 41's from taurus? I think we need a 41 special.

.45 acp.

Battle proven in three major wars, and many smaller ones, against all enemies, large, like the Hun, and small, like Charlie.

Use of anything else marks you as a gambler, or a suicide.

They will both kill someone dead. Id vote for the cheaper and more easy to acquire .45. At least I think its cheaper.... Well at least .45s are anywhere and usually stocked better.

40ozflatfoot,

If you take that approach, we may as well carry 9mm ball. It's killed a lot more folks and been in a lot more wars than .45 ever has or will. ;)
