Which of these do you prefer for self-defense/concealed carry ? When I say "self-defense", I mean from two-legged critters, not bruins. :)

I prefer the .45 because I have some, and some ammo, around. Also the 10mms I've shot have seemed just enough harder to control that I'd prefer the .45 for quick shooting.

I carry a SIG Sauer P220 .45 ACP because it's an easier gun for me to conceal than my Glock 20 10mm, but I prefer the 10mm.

I'm with my friend blades 67; as I carry a Sig-Sauer P220
in .45 ACP, myself.

Ooof. The two best self-defense calibers available, IMHO.

I carry 10mm now, but I'm looking at changing the rig out to a 1911 in .45...then later maybe I'll change back, who knows. :)

I voted...

...10mm. (Big surprise, huh. ;) )

This is odd, because I currently have four semiautos and one wheelgun in .45 ACP and only one of each in 10mm. Go figure.

Either one will work just fine, but 10mm is just so dang versatile; 135gr to 200gr bullets, there's a load to make the most rabid Facklerite or M&S partisan squeal with glee.

Plus, everybody and their grandma has a .45 ACP, but 10mm marks you as a rugged individualist. ;)

6 one - a half dozen the other. IMHO, it is not so much the round as it is the person firing the round. I'd rather face an untrained street thug armed with a .50 AE than a well trained person armed with a .22lr. However, if I were to vote I'd vote for the .45 cal. From my perspective it provides me with a little bit more control.

Love both rounds.

But for concealment, the 45 ACP round is more compact.

There are few compact 10mm handguns other than the G29.

I have owned guns in both calibers, 10mm is a outstanding caliber, but few guns are chambered for it.:(

45acp is another fine caliber, ammo is cheaper, variety of weapons chambered for it, etc...

either one is great self defense caliber.

This is a tough one, but I vote 10mm. A Glock 29 loaded with 175 gr. Winchester Silvertips is a very concealable powerhouse.

Forty-Five hands down. There's are a whole lot more choices out there in 45 than 10mm. In handguns AND ammo. No even close.
If you're bored and want just "another" handgun then sure get a 10mm.

I chose .45acp just because I'm sentimental.

I did notice on my reloading charts however
that 10mm and 40sw use the exact diameter bullet
and therefore the same range of bullet choices
the only difference being that 10mm is rated
50 to 80fps faster in some loadings.

Or are we talking just 10mm or the 40sw cartridge as well?

And whatever happened to the Bren 10?
I really wanted one of those.....

10mm is a great round, but there just aren't as many guns chambered in the 10 as there are in 45. I pick the 45, based on gun and ammo availability.

45 ACP. I just don't see that much of a difference between the two other than the 10 has the 45 beat by 100 fps give/take in the best loadings of each.

Wow, you guys sure do some funny math. Do you really need to spread disinformation just to justify your caliber choice? ;)

The lightweights:

Cor-Bon 165gr .45 ACP +P.... 1250 ft/sec & 573 ft-lbs
Cor-Bon 135gr .40 S&W... 1325 ft/sec & 526 ft-lbs
Pro Load 135gr 10mm... 1440 ft/sec & 627 ft-lbs

The heavyweights:

Cor-Bon 230gr .45 ACP P+... 950 ft/sec & 461 ft-lbs
Speer 180gr .40S&W... 1000 ft/sec & 400 ft-lbs
Pro Load 180gr 10mm... 1200 ft/sec & 575 ft-lbs

Hunting ammo:

.45 ACP & .40S&W... doesn't exist.
Cor-Bon 180gr 10mm... 1320 ft/sec & 696 ft-lbs
Cor-Bon 200gr 10mm... 1200 ft/sec & 640 ft-lbs

Using .45 ACP or .40S&W for self defense against humans isn't dumb, but don't put your heads in the sand that 10mm can't overpower either one easily, ESPECIALLY with appropriate handloads. :D

Well Castle Bravo, I'm looking at the stats you posted, and I see a whole 54 ft/lbs difference at the muzzle in the lightweight category, and slightly over a 100 ft/lbs difference in the heavyweight category. The 10 will likely show a wider disparity as the distance lengthens, but don't tell that tasty white tail that I killed him deader than Julius Ceaser with one 45ACP in the neck

10 mm vs 45

I'd have to go with the 10 mm as my favorite and most versatile cartridge around. I currently carry a Sig P 245 but can feel a Glock 29 calling my name to join my carry .45's,40's .357's and a 3" 44 Magnum. A good 10 mm definitely sets you apart from the crowds and makes a bold statement. Anybody need a beautiful 3" S&W 610 carry gun ? Bring back the Bren 10.
