44 vs 454

Kodiak, I'd carry a 12 ga anywhere I went with her for fear of predators :)

Any possibility anyone besides S&W will chamber a gun in the 460? A Ruger Alaskan 460 would be awesome.

I'm all for threat analysis. That's why I would still carry a .357 and bear gas, even in grizzly country, rather than a rifle or nothing.

I agree with you that a .357 is better than not carrying anything at all, but I'll go with the extra weight and carry something bigger when I'm in big bear country.

I had a run-in with a good-sized black bear last summer, and all I had was my .357. I didn't shoot it (didn't have to), and I'll tell you... It's the first time I felt seriously underpowered with what I was carrying. I'll carry a .44 Magnum or .454 next time.

Bullet weight is the single most important factor when it comes to penetrating big, death-resistant animals. Elephant rifles all fire extremely heavy bullets at fairly unimpressive velocities.

Were I to be in any country that I knew to have even a small population of grizzly bear, I would bring my 475 linebaugh revo. Not nearly as heavy or cumbersome as a rifle and I know it would do the job. I wouldn't hesitate to bring my 500 S&W except for the fact that it has a 10 and a half inch barrel and weighs a ton. If I were in an area that I knew to have a large grizzly population, I would take greater precautions.
