.38 special

Some of the comments in this thread are nothing but a carnival of misinformation. Carry whatever you want, it's a free country. Say whatever you want, it's a free country. But for goodness sake, don't start believing your own nonsense even if you can convince others to believe it. And get some real training, like force on force with marking rounds, and see just what happens when you are in a REAL shoot-out with a REAL other person shooting at you. THEN tell me all about how 5 rounds of 38 from a 2 inch barrel is so darn good.

Perhaps you'd see fit to enlighten us humble circus folk as to what comments, specifically, you take issue with rather than make a blanket statement about a 3-page thread.

My CC is an LCR - stoked with 38 spl. I feel very confident with 5 rounds. To me, it's not about a super charged caliber or a high capacity - it's about shot placement. That's why I practice - a lot.

In the winter, we're 40 miles north of the border in AZ. If we are out traveling and will be on roads, etc. not heavily traveled, I slide my SR9 in the car with some HC magazines. There's just too much going on down here with drug smugglers and bandits knocking off drug smugglers - and they are often armed better than LE or BP. It's not that a person is looking for trouble but you have to be on your toes and be aware of what is going on.

For normal SD CC though, I love my LCR and 38 spls.

Polar Bear versus .38 special

Of course, lets not forget the June 6, 1971, polar bear killing in NYC. One shot from a standard pressure, 158 grain RNL. Polar Bear dead on the spot. Now, that is true stopping power !!

My Rossi M68 38 is wonderful.. will put 5 158gr semi-wadcutters right on POA out to about 25 feet... Personally, I don't need anything more...

I find it odd that people say things like, "5 rounds of 38 work for me" or I've been carrying a 38 for 25 years. Works just fine".

There really isn't a way to properly state that it works unless it has been actually proven by use. A gun in your pocket is no more working than a hammer laying in the bottom of the tool chest. You gotta drive a nail to find out if it works or not. Just sayin.

BTW I carry a 38 special.

All handguns by definition are a compromise.
The .38 snub is the single most popular concealed carry handgun, so many find it the best concealed carry compromise.

I had a guy that "tried" to argue with me about how weak my pocket carry (638 with GDHP 135g +P) was, I think he had a .40cal at the range.

I said, maybe your right, I should carry my 44mag. He asked "why?". I said it would be cheaper.......

PS: I never did explain that, and my groups were tighter than his at the range with my .38.

I was told by a military firearm specialist who trained other soldiers to shoot and also worked in law enforcement for several years that if you need more than the 5 rounds you better be calling for back up. He had no problem with a 5 round snub as a CCW.

Kcub, thanks for posting that link! I started CC with a Combat Commander, but have pocket-carried for several years now; currently carrying an M49.

I pretty much carry my 642 everywhere (that its allowed :D) and its loaded with the new Federal standard pressure Nyclad, backed up by 2 s/l of Nyclads on the hip.

Yeah, if I'm going into downtown Houston I'll have my G19 and two standard caps, but ordinairy out and about stuff its the 642. My truck gun is a M85 and thats loaded with the beefier Buffalo Bore "standard pressure" (still feels like a +P round) SWCHP.

"There really isn't a way to properly state that it works unless it has been actually proven by use."

Actually, I'd say that in this case "works for me" signifies not the ability of the cartridge, but the acceptance of the individual carrying it.

As in "it works for me because I have faith in my choice of handgun, I have faith in my choice of ammunition, and I have faith in my ability to hit what I aim at."

In that sense, my Smith & Wesson 042 Centennial Airweight "works for me."

Well, according to some well known experts the 38 Special is only good for target shooting. I wonder if I should tell my wife that her house gun won't be enough for BGs. ;)

I havent shot anyone with my 642 to know for sure but Im confident the standard 38spl I keep it loaded with will keep me alive. I have however, taken the lives of many watermellon and pumpkins with my 38 and my 40's. There's a difference but its a small one.

All I know is that as of this moment in time, I am much more accurate with my LCR than I am with my only other CC gun, the LC9. I've got decent combat accuracy with the LCR and my shots go where I want them to (pretty much). I'm all over the place with the LC9 (just need more trigger time with it I hope).

I think this is my first post, but Ive been reading awhile.

This post reminds me of an old uncle of mine that is now gone on.
He retired as a game warden, and me just barely grown I ask him one day about his service revolver which was a model 14 i think.

His friend and partner retired at the same time and his partner carried a 357 revolver. I dont remember what model.

But my uncle said that his partners revolver was so heavy that it pulled his britches down. Then he said when they retired that they had killed the same amout of people and that was none.:).

He then got on a more serious note and said that if you was to start dropping those 38s in the BGs shirt pocket that he was pretty sure the battle would end.
