I have one ( along with the other AMT Automags ) & it's a blast to shoot... yes the grip is wide... but I have big hands, & I've even added a finger groove slip on cover...

Plainfield, Iver Johnson, and Universal made pistol versions of the M1 carbine.
Ruger made the Blackhawk single action in .30 carbine.

I'd forgotten those...

... pretty sure the Iver Johnson was called the "Enforcer" pistol.

I always thought of them more as sawed-off carbines, but they were legally sold as pistols.

The Automag III was the .30 Carbine version.

It was Universal that made the "Enforcer" pistol. Here's mine-

Huh. Maybe all of the pistol versions were called Enforcers. Mine's stamped "ENFORCER" on the receiver just in front of the rear sight.

WC145- That's an awesome gun.

How long have you had that one?

How much did it cost you (if you don't mind me asking)?

I saw one just like it at my local Pawn shop last week...
(Transcript of the incedent)
Pawn Pusher: Hey guy! I've got something I bet you've never seen...
Me: Oh really? (He always gets me with that)
Pawn Pusher: Yep a M1 carbine PISTOL!
Me: (salivating) That's perfect! Exactly what I need!
Pawn Pusher: I could let you have it for, say, $600
Me: Let me call my wife...

Me: Honey, you'll NEVER belive what T has at the Pawn Shop!
Wife: NO.
Me::(

(This happens more than I would like to admit. I should have listened to the Pawn Pusher and bought that 686 instead of an engagement ring...)

ableacres-
I got it this summer in a trade with a gun show dealer. He'd had the gun displayed at a few different shows over the last year and a half or so and each time I'd look it over and then walk away. Finally he was at a small local show and we worked out a trade that I recall being very fair to both of us. He had the gun tagged for $500 and that included the gun, the original mag, the two extended mags, 100rds of ammo, and a generic case. I had absolutely no reason to buy it other than the cool factor and that I'd be the only kid on my block that has one.
Plus it keeps my 5.56 PLR-16 from feeling lonely!

I didn't know those were legally pistols. I always thought they were paratrooper models with the wire stock removed and a pistol grip added

All three were called "Enforcers."
Plainfield was bought by Iver Johnson, and then I.J. bought Universal.
The Universal versions were not G.I. compatible. The Plainfield and I.J. models were. I.J. even sold an m-2 machinegun version.
I have a stainless I.J. Enforcer (semi.)

Besides the Enforcers, the Ruger Blackhawk in .30 Carbine, the Automag III, there is one other, extremely rare, called the Kimball.

Looking like an oversize High Standard .22, the gun was made in the mid-late 1950s, and went out of production somewhere around 300 (238) units.

It used a delayed blowback system (a ringed chamber) and its slide impacted a pin at the end of its travel, which proved very prone to breakage, releasing the slide to contiune on to the shooter's face.

Two samples were tested by the NRA in 1955, both broke quite soon. One was tested by Guns magazine, and its slide lugs fractured on the 192nd round!

There are a few of these pistols in the hands of collectors, one reported going for about $2k on GunsAmerica a few years ago.

Based on the info I found from a quick google, I wouldn't recommend shooting one!

Addendum to the Kimball -- a guy showed up here on TFL a couple of years ago to say that he had a BOX of Kimball frames and parts. He showed pictures. Lots of rust, not totally sure what you'd do with them... but still pretty cool. Like a time capsule.

A search will reveal the thread. Not sure if the images are still around.
