.308 through a .270 - oh my...

Hossless,
We all learn from our and the mistakes of others. Thanks for sharing. You probably will spare another from the same misfortune.
I am very curious about the conclusions of your smith and TC. It may be that the terrible accuracy is the result of built up lead deposits which resulted from the first two shots with the .308. Following shots with .270 would have been affected by the deposits and very likely added copper jacket material to the deposits and further affected accuracy. Hopefully a good scrubing and removal of deposits will restore accuracy.
I most emphatically agree with your plan to have the rifle throughly inspected by the manufacturer and a qualified gunsmith. Look forward to your report.

Well, the shop may have bad pricing, but .22WMR has a thicker case diameter than .22LR, in addition to the greater length. Neck and base diameter of .242.

In comparison, .22LR has neck and base diameters of .226.

It's not only the length that keeps .22WMR out of .22LR chambers; and the conversion chambers for shooting .22LR out of .22WMR guns are bored tighter, so the .22LR cases don't split.

Difference in bullet diameters is only .224 vs .222, but the cases are in fact different.

So the shop has bad pricing, but they were correct about .22WMR vs .22LR, justin251.

That wasn't what he meant though. its still .22 caliber.

They will flat out lie about anything from moisin nagants to daisy pellet rifles.

Tried to sell me a phoenix pistol while saying he won't carry hi points because they are crap.

Its been a year since ive been back. each trip id be reminded of why i don't go there. i kept thinking maybe they've changed. nope

On topic. im going to go sight in my 308 due to new scope mount and also do some shooting with my 22-250.

i doubt i should have identification issues.

Well if worst comes to worst and you don't want to pay for repairs and the damage isn't noticeable like you say You can take it to a pawn shop and see what they'll give you for it. Before you guys rip me for suggesting such a thing remember pawn shops make a living ripping people off.

I've been away from this thread awhile but the above is really bad bad advise, never ever get rid of an unsafe firearm in this manner. What happens to the poor Guy who buys the rifle from a pawn shop and has the rifle blow up in his face? Be honest of the problems with your firearms when you sell them, if there damaged repair them or sell them as parts rifles. Just never lie when it can potentially kill or wound someone seriously.

You are a very lucky man. Recently I saw the aftermath of shooting a 325 WSM in a 300 Ultra. Gun was in pieces, left thumb was nearly removed, forehead was lacerated to the bone from the scope. Photos were gruesome.

Welcome to TFL,

I'm glad you were not hurt. I'm willing to bet, since TC has AWESOME barrel manufacturing processes. I bet that .277" barrel just squeezed the crap out of that .308 bullet, slowed it down and left copper shaving all in the barrel. Then the subsequent .270 rounds shot like CRAPOLA because the rifling in choked full of copper. At least I'm hoping for your sake.

I saw this thread come up as unread, and was hoping ....

..... for a damage report, maybe pics ...... but instead I read this:

...... Jeffery Dahmer ate people. Does that make it OK for you to take a bite out of him?

Bad is bad. Don't be.

Took the rifle to the gunsmith on the 12th. I've never used this guy before, but I have heard good things. Unfortunately he doesn't own a $1000 bore scope. A friend of his (another gun smith) has one, but is in FL, and is supposed to be returning within the next couple of days with the bore scope. Anyway, very frustrating not being able to find out what is up with possible damage. I'll find out tomorrow if the guy showed up with the scope to do a good check inside the bore, chamber, throat... If not, I know of a smith in Beech Grove, TN. 'Bill Scartino'. I think I've read about him in a magazine article or two. Just playing the waiting game for a day or two longer.....
PS, no, I couldn't pawn the rifle off if something was unsafe with the gun - I have too much of a concience.

Never done anything like this or had an AD/ND...but I can attest to the fact that mistakes of various types happen when you're not focused on what you're doing.

This can be due to distractions from others...especially girls, being in a stressful situation, being out of your routine, being rushed...all that sort of thing.

This is when we need to slow down and focus but our monkey brains sometimes don't realize this and mistakes/accidents happen.

Glad no one was hurt.
