.308 Popularity????

Blackops-Not even 100 rounds a week. You are far to busy:D. I got my 308 this spring and have about 2800 rounds down it already. I don't keep count as most do,I save all my empty boxes of bullets in a box.:)

There's a range at college but the current house i'm in I could break in which signals that it's very easy to break in. So i'm far too reluctant to keep my rifles there. The range is also only 200yds. Where as the farm (my range) is around 1000-2000yds, depending where you want to shoot. I have a straight line to 480+ yards then a Bayou to the right at 800. Which i'm trying to build a bench on and get setup. I also reload at my friends and he farms so it's difficult to get hold of him after winter. Still got over a decade left in school also. So yeah i don't ever have much time to shoot. I'll probably be coming home more to shoot this spring luckily.

There is NOTHING inherently more accurate about the 308 over the 270WSM or virtually any other center-fire rifle cartridge. "Inherent accuracy" is mostly nonsense. There are a few cartridges with ARGUABLE inherent accuracy advantages but far and away not most, or the 308 in particular.

+1.

Don't get sucked into the hype. You made a sound choice in the .308. On paper, there may be guns with "better" ballastics but that might not play out in real world experience.

The .308 is a great round but the better ballistics of a 7mm mag or a 300 WM are a simple fact. I've hunted with all three and there is a difference, especially at distance with a nice bit of wind.

Blackops??? A decade of school left?. Doctor.?? Well i sure hope you get more chances this summer to shoot. Good luck with school

Yeah going for the big Dr. haha. I'm a junior right now, but i plan on specializing so looking at more time. Thanks, i have this winter and a month of summer to shoot, then it's off to shadowing and summer school.

consistency

the 308win is able to shoot bigger bullets than a 270 caliber rifle so it will hold better consistency at long range and also hold better in the wind.

Hey Blackops. I knows it rough now,but when your all done it will be worth it. My Daughter is in her 2nd year for a RN now too. You must be pretty young yet.

On a side note-- I find the recoil of a 308 to be very minimal at most. Had the pleasure of shooting a 50BMG last year also. Was waiting for my arm to come off and it was nothing compared to what i thought it was going to be.

Yeah i'll be 21 come January. Yeah it's pretty stressful but it's doable.

I've heard the 50bmg is more or less like shove than a full force "kick" so to speak.

Whatever - 'Black Ops' is a cool name.
Contrary to popular belief my name doesn't come from "call of duty" it comes from me and my cousin we made it up when were little (Blackops_1 & Blackops_2) playing video games non the less but it wasn't call of duty :)

Matter of fact i feel they owe me money for using my name lol

Additional Comment

Anyway we need to get back on topic before the thread gets closed due to rambling.

BLACK OPPS

I had a feeling you were still wet behind the ears lol. Im just proud you enjoy the shooting sports. Have fun and be carefull.

.308 makes bigger holes than .270. .308 is easy to obtain and generally cheaper. .308 can be comparable to 30-06. So, it's good for most non-varmint game, until you get into the big beasts like moose, bear, etc.

I have 12 308s, and a 308 reamer.

I have never been able to hit anything with a 308.

The first 308 I ever shot was an M60 when I was 14, and I am 60 now, so I have been around 308s a long time.

I get great and consistent accuracy with 223, 6mmBR, 257RAI, and 7mmRM.
Other people get accuracy with the 308, so the problem with 308 must be me.

Haha clark you currently have 12 .308s and your telling me you can't shoot them well? I have a hard time believing that. One of them has to shoot.

Clark old buddy, you are pulling our leg right? Why 12 guns if you can't shoot them effectively.

The best 308s I have are two Mausers that I rebarrelled, one with with a Parker Hale bull barrel, and one with a Hart stainless barrel. The worst are a FAL and and Ishapore, the other 8 308s are somewhere in between.

I am really interested in killing deer and antelope at 600 yards instead of my current self imposed limit of 500 yards.
When I look at the external ballistics, the 7mmRemMag is WAY better than the 308, and yet I keep reading about those that shoot 308 at long range.
