.308 or The New ACC 300 Blackout?

:confused:Building A New Savage Bolt Action For Range And Accuracy. I have kicked the the 6.5 to the 6.8 around the forum, but now i'm leaning towards the .308. Did some research and reading on the ACC 300 Blackout today. I found 2 perfect barrels that will fit the Savage action I'll be using. One in .308 @ 26" with a varmint contour that is fluted and one in ACC 300 @ 26" with a bull contour. The ACC 300 looks to be a promising caliber in a AR platform as did the 6MM, but how will it fly in a heavy barrel bolt rifle:confused:
 
I would get a .308 bolt rifle. I think 300 BLK excels on a AR platform and especially suppressed.
 
An uneducated eye would say that there's no comparison; like comparing 9mm vs. .357. Same 30 cal bullet with a much smaller case than the .308. I'd guess that the only advantage to the blackout would be that it's manageable in a semi-auto, but past a couple hundred yards it falls apart, whereas the .308 is proven out to 800-1000 yards.

It'd fly... like a rock. Yea?

Bias opinion here (Big Savage Fan). But why are you building one instead of just buying one?. Get a Savage FVSS in a 308 and shoot away. It will be as accurate or more accurate than a custom built one. Take a look at the BR model from Savage. They win more comp shoots than any other rifle out there every year.:D
 
Despite the hoopla over the 300 Blackout, it is a niche cartridge designed to fit a very narrow window of use. If you intend to use a suppressor, it would be preferable to the 308. For average hunting use, I can't see the 300 BO as very impressive. I don't even consider the 30-30 much above the minimum for deer/hogs and the 300BO is not even close to that old geezer.
 
But why are you building one instead of just buying one?

I too am a huge Savage Fan! I own 3 Savage built models...
I enjoy the end results knowing that I put that firearm together!
Everything that I have built shoots better than I do and I have built a few.

I did look at the Model: 12 VLP DBM .308 with 1 in 10" twist and a 26" SS Fluted Barrel... :D

The Blackout is really meant to be used in an AR platform. The beauty of the cartridge is that you can switch between supersonic, supersonic suppressed and subsonic suppressed without changing springs, buffers or any other parts and the gun will still reliably cycle.

For a bolt gun, if you want to shoot suppressed with maximal quieting, you just shoot a subsonic load.

Long and the short, you can get the same quiet benefit without giving up the ability to shoot a full power cartridge if you use a bolt action .308.
 
Both calibers are in different areas of use. One intended for suppressed use in a AR platform most likely along the terms of self defense. The other is an all around great round that can be used from varminting to killing decent size game. Out of those two choices, unless you have a thing for the blackout and have an application for it the .308 will suit you better in every department. That includes, price, long range shooting, game, and more than likely accuracy. The .308 has been around for quite some time now, and there is so much data on it. It's just one of the easiest rounds to load for or find ammo for. I vote .308 between those two.

I didn't see that you mentioned the 6.5x47L. It's a fine choice. 6x47L, 6mmsLR, 6.5x47L, and the 6.5mmsLR are all superior the .308 ballistics wise. But the .308 is still a fine cartridge.

If you don't have one it's required by law that every one own a go to .308 ;)

You said it was law to have a .308 so I went out and bought one only to find out you are wrong! Thank you!!! Hahaha. Just took some time to come up with the money for one. And I bought a Savage myself. :)

How far are you shooting? If it's only a 100 yards, it would be cool to see an ACC .300 as a bolt action. Although I don't know how well it would fly out of 26" barrel. Only seen them in AR flatform and they seem to be good to 200 yards.

There was a thread on the hide about retiring the .308 and i just thought to myself i never could do that to mine. We have two on setup for LR the other is a old remington 700 my father has had forever. Both tackdrivers, easy as hell to load for, makes searching for a load much easier :)

Let us know how that savage shoots. My guess is 1/2moa or better.

At some point the availability of ammo may be a factor.

That and ammo cost are my only concerns with the 6.5 Lapua, otherwise it seems like the perfect choice. :)

It was just a thought, if I did it I would limit the barrel to 20" to 22". Although I did see two for sale at McGowen Precision Barrels both 1 in 8 @ 26" varmint and bull contours, with 11 degree crown.:confused:

My MCM A5 ran me 500$ :o without the adjustable LOP or Cheek rest. Stocks are an expensive piece of a gun now a days. Or the one's i like anyway.
