308 accuracy

Damon555- I think the point we are trying to make is these steps do make a difference. Now if you are looking for deer MOA I would not worry about a lot of the steps I do either. But deer MOA is not what I am after. 10 years ago when I hunted that was fine. Now I target shoot. Big difference.
I think It was Mike ( moderator in here) that stated this once- Any rifle can be a MOA rifle with the right load. This is very true.
You say your shooting is Terrible, Try some of the stuff we mention and see if it makes your shooting better. You have nothing to lose. Lot's of times it is not the shooter but the tools. My Daughter- I let her go with my 223- Instantly shooting sub MOA with it. She has very little rifle time under her belt.

.....terrible in comparison to what people claim on the internet. Over the years I've tried many of the things mentioned in this thread without any appreciable gain in accuracy. Reloaders and target shooters are a bandwagon crowd. If one person is doing it.....the crowd will soon follow.

In all the hundreds of thousands of pieces of brass that I've loaded there has never been 1 primer pocket that appeared to need to be uniformed or deburred......I just can't figure out where this stuff is coming from.

The OP is claiming .5" groups @ 200 yards with a factory action and a custom barrel and is wanting to improve on that.....I'm not sure if someone is telling him it should shoot better or what.....but I'll tell ya.....it don't get much better than that!

Just keep in mind fella's that in no way is this meant to be disrespectful. If someone wants to go through all this stuff to try and shoot better then that's fine.....but much of it has not worked for me

Damon- That is true. I will never stop chasing the one hole target either. Load work up is half the fun of shooting. My rifles are all stock as well. last year I shot a 5 shot group of .151 at 100 yards as witnessed by 3 of the guys I shoot F Class with. ( have pics of that one) A .5 at 200 yards is great, but I also would try to keep getting better. It is true as you say-Everyone is better on the net, but there are also those that are just offering help and advice, They have nothing to gain or lose if you believe them or not. I shoot as I shoot. Whether people believe I can shoot that good is of no concern to me. Don't give up and be happy with were your at-Keep pushing and it stays fun and interesting. Or as I did-Join comp shooting and really push the envelope. Im 55 years old, been shooting for over 40 years. last year at a match I had a 11 year old kid dust my rear end bad. Very humbling to say the least. I felt like asking a 11 year old to teach me how to shoot:eek:

Now that there is good stuff!

I agree about the load work up....to me it's not fun any more when I think it isn't going to get any better.

I've got a darn LR308 that has given me fits over the last year....it "should" shoot much better than it does. That's what piqued my interest in this thread......

That's for sure!
Weighing bullets, Sierra Match Kings all day for days on end in the military...
*Supposed*... to be 168 Grain,
Half the box will be a grain or two off one direction or the other, some will be 5 grains up or down,

Then you hit them with the micrometer, and find out they are +/- 0.003" or more, all over the place...

I just weighted 22 of the 175 SMK

One was 174.7 One was 174.8 One was 175.3. 18 were 174.9 to 175.1

Most any 308 ( any caliber for that matter) should hold 1 inch or less at 100 yards with out to much effort.
MOA and sub MOA rifles are very numerous now days.I have 9 sub MOA rifles and I only have 9 rifles

I still have a 308 reamer, Benchmark and Shilen select match .308 barrels coming in the door, and dozens of actions waiting. I could build a 308 and shoot it better now. Not as well as Bart, but I would bet money I could build one that is sub moa.

I have (3) 223s (2) 6mmBRs and (1) 257RAI that have AVERAGED better than 1" 5 shots at 100yard [to keep that good average, a rifle must avoid windy days or store the range report on Hillary's server].... that's only 6 rifles. I probably have another 50 center fire rifles that I have actually taken to the range.

Oh wait, it seems I do have a 308 that has average sub moa... it is only shot 3 groups. It is 308 #4 shooting 110 gr Vmax 43kpsi 45 gr bulk 4895 2950 fps.

I raise my number to 7 rifles, and one is a 308

Rifle #4 has a parker hale sniper trainer barrel from numrich. With a .299" bore the pilot is hard to get in.

Anyone who takes that many rifles to the range, and each rifle only gets one trip to the range.... may get insufficient data:(

Pic above same as link below.

Nice collection there Clark, But ya kinda lost me on the post:D. My point is you can go into the store, buy a off the shelf almost anything and get sub MOA with them now if not sub definitely MOA.

Maybe 3 shot groups, but overall, I suspect 1.5 MOA.

Shoot Bart B 10 shot groups and I suspect more than that.

That is certainly more than acceptable for hunting, you want sub MOA there are a lot of spec 308 etc out there, but they are not your off the shelf rifles and they are going to cost something around a grand or more.
