300 yard golf ball?

Golf ball at 300 sounds pretty tough, at least for me.
I've been doing some 200 yard shooting lately, and it is my experience that my 1 inch 100 yard groups turn into 3"+ 200 yard groups.:( I frankly haven't done any measured 300 yard shooting lately, but I'm guessing that my "real world" groups will be 6" or better.
I know that many of ya must think that I just must not be much of a marksman, but try it for real and get back with me.
Rifle I've been shooting the most lately is the 222, which admitadly isn't the best over 200 yards. My .270 one time dished out a couple of 400 yard groups that were less than 6 inches. I thought that was pretty good. jd

Tried it today 307 yards, yep its doable. I put it on top a milk jug 3rd shot first 2 were real close, used white art paper for background used red paint on the ball. Was going to do 2, 5 shot groups but it was'nt as bad as I thought 3rd shot ball was gone,REM 300MAG;):D

300 yard golf ball and sight-in target.

Messed up on the scope clicks after the first shot. Afterwards work'em in close to that 10. Hit the golf ball at 4 o'clock position on next shot. Bullet when straight thru leaving just that small nick in front with a split all the way round to the exit. Golfballs are tuff!

.how hard will it be to hit a 300 yard golf ball (~1/2 MOA)?
Hard.

It's harder to shoot 1/2 moa at 300 yards than it is at 100 yards. Wind has more of an effect and, depending on conditions, mirage may also.

It's much harder to hit a golf ball on the first shot at 300 yards than you might expect from a rifle that groups 1/2 min. The main reason is that, when shooting groups, the group doesn't need to be centered at point of aim.

However, imagining a rifle already sighted in for that distance, and conditions like the previous poster did, it's not especially hard. Why, you ask?

In a 1/2 min group, that measures a little over 1 1/2" at 300 yards, about 2/3rds of the rounds in a group are within about 1/2 the diameter of a group.

Also, the diameter of the bullet must be added to the size of the target, because a "hit" is made on a golf ball, even when the edge of the bullet strikes it, compared with the group measurement, which is measured from the center of each bullet hole. Oh yeah, and put the golf ball on the ground and use a .308 match bullet that can still ricochet and hit it with a low shot. ;)

The hardest part for most of us is hitting the golf ball 300 yards with a driver then and seeing enough of it to shoot it with a rifle. I've hit drives that far, a bit downhill, but they don't allow guns at the golf course. :)

The first group on the right of my photo was the initial first 3 with a 4-5mph wind. I couldve probably let the rifle cool and let myself calm down for the center group, and I imagine it wouldve been about like the first. But I imagine an experienced shooter with a kestrel and one that can read wind down range could hit it within 5, just really depends on the wind.

Used to do it quite often with a 4" 357...@ 30 FEET! Yelling "FORE" would have been a good idea as quite often the target would often disappear or take a pretty long flight. Entrance and exit holes were usually quite small, BTW.
@ 300 yards? Could probably get it done with enough ammo and a good spotter.

Here is a ten shot group at 300 yards.Looks like 7 maybe 8 out of 10 would have hit golf ball. Savage 308.155 Serria Match and RL-15.This was a new load so i was just going for group size here. Will load 100 more and do final sight in with this load. Maybe tweak it a bit and try tighten it up. So golf balls at 300 yards is very do-able The 2 stringers off to the side????Was watching a Girl dance ha ha. No the guy next to me pulled his trigger a split second before me and he had those damn muzzel brake stuff. It was enough blast that it would blow my cleaning patches of the table. Ok-Now that i have made my excuses for 2 bad shots...

With a half minute rifle hitting a golf ball at 300 yards still requires some skill: mostly in reading the wind. At 300 yards a gentle wind will drift the bullet several inches and the shooter must have the skill to hold into a wind that is changing from shot to shot. Another factor to over come is the breeze that isn't consistent from the rifle's muzzle to the target during the shot. On a hot day, through a high power rifle scope, there will be a mirage that will have an effect on the bullet's strike. Can a golf ball be hit at 300 yards? Yes.

Nice shooting 4r!

Dang, just think how much more fun golf would be if we could play it with rifles.

200 and 340 yds

So I finally got a chance to shoot a golf ball at 300 yds. Well not exactly, the first one is at 200 yds. 3 out of 5

The second one was at 340 because there is no target boards at 300. It took my 7th shot to hit it.

Rifle used was a Rem 700 .223 with a 4-12x40 Redfield with Accurange Reticle. Zeroed at 200 yds with Hornady 55gr SP. The holdover points were at 300, 400, and 500.

Well I guess it's doable.
